580-St. Cecilia Page 6 September 10, 2017 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

My Dear Parishioners, Today we celebrate THE LORD’S DAY on this 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Old Testament scripture and the Gospel pas- sage for today address the significance of the warning which must be given when sin is detected. The warnings come primarily from those who have been charged with providing oversight to others and because of their position are able to recognize the dan- ger which is in sight. This danger is sin and the evil which it brings to the individual and the community. Failure to recognize this danger and alert others to it is not only a dereliction of duty but also a sin as well. In the Gospel the Lord Jesus instructs His Apostles in the oversight they are charged to render God’s People. Through the sacra- ment of holy orders they are commissioned to be the watchmen and the reconcilers for those who have not heeded the warnings of sin and have fallen victim to it. These are the shepherds the Lord calls to lead the sheep away from the dangers of wickedness. In the Old Testament Book of the Lord speaks of those who are called to lead and serve as watchmen in chapters 33 and 34. Saint Augustine also wrote regarding the important role the clergy have in serving as watchmen and shepherds. A severe pun- ishment awaits those clerics who fail in this duty because of indifference or a desire for popularity. The pastoral oversight must always be exercised with love. In today’s second lection from the Letter to the Romans, the Apostle Paul reminds us that “love is the fulfillment of the law.” Pastoral care is the hallmark for the sacrament of holy orders. Bishops, priests and deacons are charged to provide the oversight and care which Christ handed down to the Apostles for His Church. In a special way the order of Bishop is the office which over- sees the welfare of the local Church. This week the BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL begins in the Diocese of Paterson. Our good Bishop is especially mindful of the needy and the marginalized in our area and they are the primary beneficiaries of the BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL. Our generous participation in the appeal provides support to the poor, the elderly, the handi- capped, the disadvantaged, children and our elderly priests. How can we not participate and help those who count on us? Do not these deserve our assistance? Can we say “NO” to those who are so vulnerable? I know how loving and generous you are and I look forward to this year’s BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL being the most successful ever within our Rockaway parishes. As your pastor, father and watchman, I remind you of our Christian obligation to be attentive to those who are in need. Our self- less and sacrificial care for others is an indication of our love for Christ our Savior who said, “whatever you did to the least of these, you did to me.” In recognition of their wonderful generosity to the Church, Martin and Lee Ann Mackin will be presented with the VIVERE CHRISTUS EST AWARD which will be presented to them this afternoon in Saint John the Baptist Cathedral in Paterson. Our gratitude and prayer-filled best wishes to Marty and Lee Ann! God bless you,-FATHER ZIG

ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM, Bishop and Doctor of the Church—Sept. 13—Patron of Sacred Orators

Saint John, named Chrysostom (golden-mouthed) on account of his eloquence, came into the world of Christian parents, about the year 344, in the city of Antioch. His mother, a widow at the age of twenty, was a model of virtue. He studied rhetoric under Li- banius, a pagan, the most famous orator of the age. In 374, he began to lead the life of an anchorite in the mountains near Antioch, but in 386 the poor state of his health forced him to return to Antioch, where he was ordained priest. In 398, he was elevated to the See of Constantinople and became one of the greatest lights of the Church. But he had enemies in high places and some were ecclesiastics, not the least being Theophilus, of Alexandria, who repented of this before he died. His most powerful enemy, however, was the Empress Eudoxia, who was offended by the apostolic freedom of his dis- courses. Several accusations were brought against him ina pseudo-council, and he was sent into exile. In the midst of his sufferings, like the Apostle St. Paul whom he so greatly admired, he found the greatest peace and happiness. He had the consolation of knowing that the Pope remained his friend, and did for him what lay in his power. His enemies were not satisfied with the sufferings he had already endured, and they banished him still further, to Pythius, at the very extremity of the Empire. He died on his way there on September 14, 407.

PRAYER God, You are the strength of those who hope in You. You gave Your Church St. John Chrysostom, Your Bishop, who was endowed with great eloquence and was able to withstand great sufferings. Let us learn from his teaching and be inspired by the example of his patience. Amen. Taken from, Lives of the Saints; Catholic Booking Publishing Company, 1999, New Jersey
