SantasJules Verne: Captain Grant's ChildrenI was in love with Jules Verne's stories when I was a child, and still am, though he is not a distinctive literary master, like his contemporaries, Flaubert or Zola. No matter. Verne knew how to spin a tale, smoothly mixing sciene, history and geography, and daring the reader's imagination to fly off into the future. His stories have become famous movies (The Trip to the Moon, Around the World in Eighty Days), but there is nothing like the living page. Unfortunately, his works have been poorly distributed in the United States, and when they appear, they are botched beyond recognition--for the most part. Captain Grant's Children (also known as In Serach of the Castways) is a 600 page novel, that takes the reader from the Argentine Pampas, to South Africa, the Indian Ocean, Australia, New Zealand, and along the 37th Parallel, when a Scottish nobleman, Lord Glenarvan searches for a fellow Scotchman, Captain Harry Grant, who was lost while searching for a place to found a Scottish colony. Aside from breathtaking adventures involving climbing the Andes, being saved from an earthquake, suviving a deluge, a terrible sea storm, Australian bandits, New Zealand Maoris--and other disasters, the story is one of camaraderie among friends, the children of Grant, a stoic Scottish major, a garrulous French geographer, the inimitable Paganel,a group that never loses their moral fiber and reach their happy destination and come back to their beloved Scotland. A bit maudlin? Not at all in fact. There is humor, adventure,and good-heartedness, along with treachery. Hollywood could perhaps take notice and make one of the great epic adventures of all time. His ship, the Britannia, has sunk. He is alive but is being held hostage. Captain Grant's children, Mary and Robert, along with their friend and benefactor Lord Glenervan launch a rescue expedition. But where do they begin their search? The original SOS message written in three languages is partially destroyed by sea water. The remaining fragments can be interpreted several ways. Only one clue is certain, Captain Grant is somewhere along the 37th parallel. Racing against time, risking their lives, the brave adventurers are determined to find and save the shipwrecked captain. On ne le reverra plus."1 Dans le système des personnages que Verne met en place, il est frappant de constater que le héros n'est jamais seul même s'il cherche la solitude. Même Nemo qui fuit la société à bord de son sous-marin a un second et des compagnons.2 Mais dans un bon nombre de romans où un but doit être atteint c'est une véritable équipe qui se met en place. Ce sont ces exemples que nous allons examiner ici en observant comment plusieurs traditions se conjuguent, celle du récit de voyage imaginaire et du roman d'aventures, bien sûr, mais aussi les impératifs du roman éducatif et les richesses de l'écriture théâtrale.Lorsque l'on examine les textes de Verne en tant que roman d'aventures, on ne peut ignorer la nécessité éducative qui s'impose à l'auteur. Il publie dans le cadre d'une "Bibliothèque d'éducation et de récréation".     Captain Grant: One of Verne’s Finest Novels [Postface to Captain Grant’s Children, translated into Chinese by Wang Ren-cai, published April 2012] Captain Grant’s Children: Journey round the World is one of the most success- ful books by Jules Verne (1828-1905). The longest work, with The Mysterious Island, in his 50-year series, the Extraordinary Journeys, it has constantly been popular worldwide, although never attaining the great fame or fortune of Journey to the Cen- tre of the Earth, Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Seas or Around the World in Eighty Days. The book opens with the capture of a hammerhead shark by Lord Glenarvan, sailing his brand-new yacht the Duncan off the west coast of Scotland. In its stomach is found a bottle and in the bottle is discovered an incomplete message in three lan- guages, written by Captain Grant while heading for the South Seas to found a Scot- tish colony, but who has ended up shipwrecked. Glenarvan, together with his wife, his cousin Major MacNabbs and Robert and Mary, Grant’s children, decides to res- cue him. In a comic episode the distinguished French geographer Paganel agrees to joins the expedition: he has embarked on the wrong ship, his original aim being to explore the Yalu-Zangbo-Chu River in Tibet. Although Grant’s message precisely indi- cates the latitude, 37 degrees 11 minutes, the rest of the message is ambiguous. Fol- lowing a first interpretation, the team heads across South America from west to east, undergoing many dramatic adventures on the way, a landslide, a major flood, and packs of wolves and crocodiles being only some of the problems they encounter.

E. The Union Jack was flying at the mizzen-mast, and a blue standard bearing the initials E. G., embroidered in gold, and surmounted by a ducal coronet, floated from the topgallant head of the main-mast. The name of the yacht was the DUNCAN, and the owner was Lord Glenarvan, one of the sixteen Scotch peers who sit in the Upper House, and the most distinguished member of the Royal Thames Yacht Club, so famous throughout the United Kingdom. Lord Edward Glenarvan was on board with his young wife, Lady Helena, and one of his cousins, Major McNabbs. The DUNCAN was newly built, and had been making a trial trip a few miles outside the Firth of Clyde. She was returning to Glasgow, and the Isle of Arran already loomed in the distance, when the sailor on watch caught sight of an enormous fish sporting in the wake of the ship. Lord Edward, who was immediately apprised of the fact, came up on the poop a few minutes after with his cousin, and asked John Mangles, the captain, what sort of an animal he thought it was. “Well, since your Lordship asks my opinion,” said Mangles, “I think it is a shark, and a fine large one too.” “A shark on these shores!” “There is nothing at all improbable in that,” returned the captain.

Un chapitre théorique, intitulé Théorie de l’initiation littéraire, propose une définition détaillée du concept d’initiation, autant dans son sens anthropologique que littéraire. Ce chapitre offre aussi une réflexion sur les effets de la violence dans la littérature pour la jeunesse – violence que Jules Verne, comme plusieurs autres auteurs et chercheurs – juge salutaire. Les deux chapitres suivants sont consacrés à l’analyse du contenu initiatique des Enfants du capitaine Grant et d’Un capitaine de quinze ans. Ces romans font pour la première fois l’objet d’une étude comparative approfondie qui s’attache à l’initiation sous ses trois principaux aspects : 1) les personnages, 2) les épreuves initiatiques, 3) la violence et la peur. En effet, ces deux romans à portée initiatique présentent plusieurs ressemblances au niveau des personnages, des univers diégétiques et de l’intrigue, mais on remarque néanmoins qu’Un capitaine de quinze ans, qui présente un novice adolescent, comporte des scènes beaucoup plus effrayantes et violentes que Les enfants du capitaine Grant, roman qui met en scène un héros enfant.

They were told that magic returned to its source but Rienna's daughter Eden inherits a double-edged magic. I have never heard this novel described as anything other than a children's book and I was surprised to find out that it wasn't intended as such by the author.
