A CASE STUDY IN THE METHODOLOGY OF COMPARATIVE PHILOSOPHY MONTE RANSOME JOHNSON & BRETT SHULTS ABSTRACT: We offer a sceptical examination of a thesis recently advanced in a monograph published by Princeton University Press entitled Greek Buddha: Pyrrho’s Encounter with Early Buddhism in Central Asia. In this dense and probing work, Christopher I. Beckwith, a professor of Central Eurasian studies at Indiana University, Bloomington, argues that Pyrrho of Elis adopted a form of early Buddhism during his years in Bactria and Gandhāra, and that early Pyrrhonism must be understood as a sect of early Buddhism. In making his case Beckwith claims that virtually all scholars of Greek, Indian, and Chinese philosophy have been operating under flawed assumptions and with flawed methodologies, and so have failed to notice obvious and undeniable correspondences between the philosophical views of the Buddha and of Pyrrho. In this study we take Beckwith’s proposal and challenge seriously, and we examine his textual basis and techniques of translation, his methods of examining passages, his construal of problems and his reconstruction of arguments. We find that his presuppositions are contentious and doubtful, his own methods are extremely flawed, and that he draws unreasonable conclusions. Although the result of our study is almost entirely negative, we think it illustrates some important general points about the methodology of comparative philosophy. In the works of Pythagoras there are different interpretations of the myths about the afterlife of the human soul. The question of the eternity of the soul has been shown to be of great importance in the work of Pythagoras. Our goal is to analyze the socio-philosophical, moral views of Pythagoras, as well as the theory of knowledge, his views on man, based on sources. It is revealed that Pythagoras was influenced by ancient myths, the Upanishads, in creating his works. The Reign of the Whirlwind 122 Chapter 7 Herakleitos ----------- 1. Life and book We have very little reliable information about the life of Herakleitos son of Bloson, of Ephesos. It is clear from the biographical accounts that survive, that the Alexandrian scholars could find little, even though they were not fussy about reliability. They made up anecdotes to fit some of the more striking sayings of this paradox-loving writer; and as a result, “Herakleitos the Dark” became even more obscure. We have to guess, first, at his dates. He knows something about Pythagoras and Xenophanes; and Parmenides seems to know something about him. We can hazard the conjecture that his book was written by 500 BCE (when Xenophanes had still the last quarter of his long life to live, and Pythagoras was in his last years). This would make 545 BCE a reasonable guess for his birth date. He probably died before 480.i Herakleitos belonged to the ancient royal clan of Ephesos. He is said to have deposited his book in the great temple of Artemis for which his native city was famous (22 A 1).ii We can fairly suppose that it was in his eyes the worthy trophy of a greater victory than any triumph in arms. Whether he was actually melancholic (“the weeping philosopher” as he came to be called)iii we cannot say. He was certainly both an angry man, and an intellectual aristocrat. I do this by explaining how an instructor of a course in ancient Greek philosophy can teach Greek philosophy in a way that makes its study relevant to how the students in the course live their lives. Since this is the most likely way in which its relevance to contemporary life might be realized in practice, I explain its relevance from this perspective. I contrast the different ways in which ancient Greek philosophy is taught, and give examples of how it can be taught that calls attention to the ways in which what the Greeks said are relevant to how students live their lives. In this paper, I will explain how ancient Greek philosophy can be made relevant to contemporary life. The form in which I will explain this is by discussing how an instructor of a course in ancient Greek philosophy can teach Greek philosophy in a way that makes its study relevant to how the students in the course live their lives, since this is the most likely way in which its relevance to contemporary life might be realized in practice. 8 Meanwhile, the Second Continental Congress was moving inexorably towards a clean break from England. On June 7, 1776, fiery Henry Lee of Virginia moved that the united colonies should declare their independence. Lee’s resolution was formally adopted on July 2. Congress then appointed a committee to prepare an appropriate statement. A rupture of this nature called for a formal explanation to justify such action, to rally resistance in the colonies, and to win support from foreign nations. Thomas Jefferson was called upon as one contemporary described it to “advertise Mr. Lee’s resolution.” Jefferson rose to the occasion and gave his appeal a universal flavor by invoking the natural rights of humankind. Every attempt was made to make it clear that George III was the villain and not the British people. Jefferson was a product of the Enlightenment Period, and he borrowed extensively from Rousseau, Locke, Voltaire, Montesquieu, and others. Jefferson delivered a withering blast at British tyranny and was not above taking certain liberties with historical truth. Some critics viewed his declaration as “the world’s greatest editorial.” The Declaration of Independence had a universal impact and was a “shout heard round the world.” It became the source of countless revolutionary movements against arbitrary power. Aicher_10June2013_Layout 1 6/13/13 3:22 PM Page 111 Herodotus and the Vulnerability Ethic in Ancient Greece PETER AICHER Herodotus was a narrative pioneer, and his literary trek begins with the story of Croesus. More legend than history, the Croesus Logos, as it’s sometimes called in the literature, draws the reader in with its concentrated drama of family ambition, riddling oracles, prophetic irony, and the fated tumble of its hero. The aim of my essay is to explore some important dimen- sions of this story that have been overlooked in Herodotean scholarship and in prevailing accounts of Greek ethical thought. First, the story of Croesus gives shape and dramatic form to an ethic of vulnerability occupying an important place in Greek thought. A chief point of reference in this condiseration of the vulnerability ethic will be, in a rather full discussion, Aristotle’s own reaction to the Croesus story in the Nichomachean Ethics. Aristotle’s complex, perhaps inconsistent, discussion of a core maxim from the story re- veals a real ambivalence about its ethical message. Since this message from the Croesus story has much in common with the message of tragedy, Aristotle’s ambiva- lence also has relevance for his famous definition of tragedy in the Poetics, and in general expresses more resistance to- wards the message of tragic vulnerability than Martha Nuss- baum allows in her portrayal of an Aristotle who recognizes the fragility of goodness. There is also an important dimension to Solon’s (or rather Herodotus’) vulnerability ethic that Aristotle does not con- sider, since it lies outside the scope of the ethical life as he conceives it. -
Thomas Paine's Influential Rhetoric in Common Sense
Revolutionary Persuasion: Thomas Paine’s Influential Rhetoric in Common Sense On January 10, 1776, an unknown English immigrant drastically altered the course of human events by publishing what has been referred to as the most influential pamphlet in American history. This man was Thomas Paine, and his pamphlet was titled Common Sense - two words which to this very day resonate as synonymous with American independence and freedom. Paine’s influential writing in Common Sense made an immediate impact on the minds and hearts of thousands of colonists throughout the densely populated eastern seaboard of North America, calling for an end to tyrannical British rule and for the subsequent foundation of an independent, egalitarian republic. Paine’s “hardnosed political logic demanded the creation of an American nation” (Rhetoric, np), and through his persuasive discourse he achieved just that. Paine’s knowledge and use of rhetorical skill was a main reason for the groundbreaking, widespread success of Common Sense, the magnitude of which, many would argue, has yet to be matched. Rhetoric is the art or science of persuasion and the ability to use language effectively. This paper will provide an in-depth analysis of Paine’s rhetoric in Common Sense by examining factors such as the historical time period, communicator attributes, and audience psychology, and will deliver a thorough application of contemporary modes of persuasive study to the document’s core ideological messages. To Paine, the cause of America was the cause of all mankind (Paine, 3), and for that matter he will be forever known as the father of the American Revolution.
