  • The First Question Any Social Enterprise Should Be Asking
    JERR’S JOURNAL July 17, 2014 The first question any social enterprise should be asking . I once spent three days working with The Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission, a safe haven for indigent men who needed a place to stay and nourishing food for up to seven days. The CEO asked me to meet with his entire Board and staff, help them understand social enterprise, and then facilitate a closing discussion about the shelter’s strategic direction. The first question I asked during the discussion came right from Peter Drucker’s playbook. In his seminal work The Practice of Management , he wrote that because the question “is so rarely asked – at least in a clear and sharp form -- and (is) so rarely given adequate study and thought, (it) is perhaps the most important single cause of business failure.” The question? “What business are you in?” Shouldn’t be that hard to answer, should it? Well . * * * * * Does anybody here remember Jack McKinney? During the summer of 1979, the Los Angeles Lakers hired an obscure, 44-year-old assistant coach from Portland to coach a team that featured Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the five-time NBA MVP, and a rookie point guard named Magic Johnson. Now, I grew up worshipping the (then) Minneapolis Lakers, even played in an abbreviated grade school game against one of our hated enemies during halftime of a Lakers game at the Minneapolis Auditorium. Those were the George Mikan, Jim Pollard, Vern Mikkelsen Lakers -- the original Big Three -- who won five NBA titles in six seasons from 1949 through 1954.

Reviewed by Karen Guenther (Mansfield University) Published on H-Pennsylvania (August, 2021) Commissioned by Jeanine Mazak-Kahne (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) Printable Version: https://www.h-net.org/reviews/showpdf.php?id=56380 The Speed Game is Paul Westhead’s personal account of how he tried to revolutionize basketball through fast breaks on offense and full-court pressure on defense, with the goal of wearing out the opposition while scoring more points. The book is quite engaging, and the reader becomes engrossed in Westhead’s adventures. Westhead, a Philadelphia native, grew up in the suburbs and was a reserve at St. Joseph’s University when Jack Ramsey coached the team. After college, he coached high school basketball in Cheltenham and taught English before becoming the head coach at LaSalle University. When his friend Jack McKinney became head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, he hired Westhead, who had worn out his welcome at LaSalle University as an assistant. After McKinney suffered major injuries in a bicycling accident, Westhead became interim head coach and led the Lakers to the 1979-80 NBA title. However, his efforts to implement “the speed game” met resistance from Magic Johnson, and the Lakers fired Westhead during his third season as head coach. Following his dismissal, Westhead briefly coached the Chicago Bulls, but he only lasted one season.

    e-Zine September 2006 Your Inside Scoop (TM) No Shock – Founding ABL Player Energizes Detroit – Delivers another Title In an ironic twist, the 10th anniversary season of the WNBA arrived at its summer conclusion Saturday with the championship determined by of all things _ a founding player of the former American Basketball League. Katie Smith, the former Ohio State star who won two ABL titles with the Columbus Quest, sealed Detroit’s final comeback in a five-game series of comebacks with a basket in the closing seconds to ensure the Shock’s 80-75 victory over the defending champion Sacramento Monarchs to win the series, 3-2, in the Joe Louis Arena in downtown Detroit. It’s the second time the Shock, under Coach Bill Laimbeer, dethroned the defending champion. In 2003, the Shock ended the two-year rule of the Los Angeles Sparks with two wins in their normal home arena _ the Palace in Auburn Hills, Mich. Detroit extended this series Wednesday by beating the Monarchs in the fourth game in the Arco Arena in Sacramento, forcing a move back to the Midwest for Game 5. However, the Palace had already booked a Mariah Carey concert necessitating the move to the “temporary” venue that is also the home of the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings. Smith finished with 17 points behind teammate Deanne Nolan’s game-high 24 points. But it was the former Ohio State star’s clutch shooting in the Katie Smith flies high vs. Yolanda Griffith in series that kept Detroit alive at several points when the an epic Columbus Shock was about to sink for good.
