November/December 2013 Publisher’s View Well as you can see in this issue quite a few things are coming up and much has been happening. First we had the stellar recording of trumpeter, Mike Field entitled RUSH MODE, not to forget his tasty accompanying musicians. I have always found Mike full of enthusiasm for his playing, he is very creative. All tracks on this new CD. were composed and arranged by him, and his artistic imagination certainly come through. Full marks for originality, with a variety of tempos that you can appreciate without getting lost. Then we had yet another top-notch recording by the acclaimed Latin band Manteca , their 11th CD. this one named MONDAY NIGHT AT THE MENSA DISCO. For all you Latin jazz fans you won’t be disappointed. This band was originally formed in 1979 by percussionist , Matt Zimbel and bassist, Henry Heillig. Since those early days they have performed across the U.S.A , Canada, and Europe . Look for Manteca at The Monarch Tavern , November 10th. While on the subject of first-class bands the Jazz Orchestra have just released their new CD. REFLECTIONS featuring veteran saxophonist, Mike Murley and Gordon Foote , Director. This recording has a variety of fine original arrangements , delightful ballads and up-tempo numbers. Something to please everyone, with the tunes being played by 21 practiced musicians, plus of course their tutors, Mike Murley and Gordon Foote. Next up a new recording 57 MINUTES by captivating vocalist, Laura Marks to be released on November 12th at The Jazz Bistro. Laura has been on the jazz scene for numerous years performing in Toronto’s major clubs, she never fails to get a decent review. Mark this one on your calendar . Finally a live recording to be made at Hugh’s Room on November 25th this is by a band named The Octokats led by saxophonist, Sarang Kulkarni. They will be playing West Coast style of Jazz , very smooth , my kind of jazz. Just look at some of the renowned musicians in this band ( in advertisement) one night not to miss. As you will also notice in their advert the beautiful Rose Theatre in Brampton have superb line-up coming in, worth the trip out of town. On the subject of advertisers , once more I would like to express my gratitude to those fine musicians, establishments, theatres and clubs who support this free non-profit publication with their adverts. Margaret Marian McPartland O.B.E. March 20. 1918.—August 20. 2013. Photo by Barry Thomson One might of thought of Marian as the jazz version of another famous British artist, vocalist, Vera Lynn. They both entertained the troops during the second world war and both been commended for their service to Britain. Although Marian moved to the U.S.A in 1944,shortly after her marriage to American cornetist, Jimmy Mcpartland. Vera Lynn continued to sing all through the war with the bombs falling and remained in England. Of interest, Vera is 96 and as far as I know still alive, she is now Dame Vera Lynn. Now back to the remarkable career of Marian McPartland who first began playing the piano when she was just a child at 3 or 4 years old. Her early classical studies also included the violin. She continued her musical education at the highly recognized Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, England. Over 70 years this fine lady had gained recognition as a pianist, radio host, writer, and composer. Marian had been recording since 1951, received numerous honorary degrees and awards including a Grammy in 2004.. Her style as a pianist was uncomplicated, you could always relate to what she was doing. Listening to her was a delight, whether it was nice standard or one of her own superb compositions, it was perfection. Not surprising she was in constant demand either as a soloist or trio format, where Marian seemed most happy. Not only did Marian understand the piano as an instrument, with all its complexities, she also understood exactly what other pianists were doing, and could explain it. Marian was a true technician in more ways than one. I remember one occasion at the Bistro, where she loved playing, and owner Lothar Lang was elated to have her there. Anyhow. I had met Marian previously and she said to me “Hi Dave. I wonder how many other Brit’s” are here to- night”. Then she sat down at the piano, picked up the microphone and said “how many Brit’s are here to-night?” The response was a loud cheer, which she really got a kick out of. Marian had never forgot her British background and we will never forget her and what she had brought to the world of jazz.. Cedar Anthony Walton Jr. January 17. 1934—August 19. 2013 Photo by Barry Thomson We often hear the expression “he’s played with everyone” and that certainly applies to this outstanding bebop player. Many will remember him for his stellar performances at the Café des Copains and Montreal Bistro, where he usually packed the places. Born in Dallas, Texas , U.S.A. Cedar was fortunate enough to have a mother who was concert pianist, and who was his first teacher. At an early age his early influences came from listening to Nat King Cole, Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk and Art Tatum. He first attended the University of Denver studying composition and arranging, then into the music education system at a local public school. Everything soon started to pay off his ability play and arrange gained recognition by the greats of that era.(50s). Like most in the U.S.A and Britain at that time he was drafted into the U.S. Army and sent to Germany. While there he jammed with, Leo Wright, Don Ellis, and Eddie Harris , after 2 years military time he was discharged on completion of service. From that moment on he never looked back, going on to play as a sideman with, Kenny Dorham, J.J. Johnson, and Gigi Gryce. Then from 1958-1961 joined a Jazztet led by Benny Golson and Art Farmer, and in 1959 recorded with John Coltrane, no solos for Cedar on this recording. Next up, early 60s he joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers as both pianist and arranger. This group also consisted of Wayne Shorter and Freddie Hubbard, wow! what a combination. Just over 3 years with Art Blakey then Cedar moved on to perform with Sonny Cris, Pat Martino, Eric Kloss, Charles McPherson, Abbey Lincoln, and Lee Morgan. Then to surprise many during the 70s he led a funk group by the name of Mobias. As leader Cedar had over 40 recordings to his name, as sideman over 25. In January 2010 , he was inducted as a member of the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters. Cedar Walton certainly lived up to his description “ American Hard Bop Jazz Pianist”.
