SWC Walk NNN Clarendon Way – Salisbury to Winchester The Clarendon Way is a long distance waymarked footpath in Hampshire and Wiltshire. It starts at Salisbury Cathedral near the River Avon and ends near the River Itchen at Winchester Cathedral. The route passes through the Clarendon Estate and close to the 12th century ruins of Clarendon Palace. It then passes through the villages Pitton, the Winterslows, Broughton and King's Somborne, Farley Mount Country Park and St Cross. -

European Site Conservation Objectives: Supplementary Advice on Conserving and Restoring Site Features Salisbury Plain Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Site code: UK0012683 Date of Publication: 20 February 2017 Page 1 of 30 About this document This document provides Natural England’s supplementary advice about the European Site Conservation Objectives relating to Salisbury Plain SAC. This advice should therefore be read together with the SAC Conservation Objectives which are available here. You should use the Conservation Objectives, this Supplementary Advice and any case-specific advice given by Natural England, when developing, proposing or assessing an activity, plan or project that may affect this site. This Supplementary Advice to the Conservation Objectives presents attributes which are ecological characteristics of the designated species and habitats within a site. The listed attributes are considered to be those that best describe the site’s ecological integrity and which, if safeguarded, will enable achievement of the Conservation Objectives. Each attribute has a target which is either quantified or qualitative depending on the available evidence. The target identifies as far as possible the desired state to be achieved for the attribute. The tables provided below bring together the findings of the best available scientific evidence relating to the site’s qualifying features, which may be updated or supplemented in further publications from Natural England and other sources. The local evidence used in preparing this supplementary advice has been cited. The references to the national evidence used are available on request. Where evidence and references have not been indicated, Natural England has applied ecological knowledge and expert judgement. -

However, a letter to the councils from the Leader of Wiltshire Council, Philip Whitehead and the Chief Executive, Terence Herbert, confirmed Wiltshire Councils views that: • Greater clarity needs to be given to communities in the guidance about what Neighbourhood Plans can and can’t influence; • The current anomaly regarding the weight given to those over two years old in decision making must be urgently addressed; • The process of updating Neighbourhood Plans should be simplified or they should be extended to run over a longer time span, in line with the Wiltshire Local Plan; • The current situation where neighbourhood plans are being made increasing less valid over time and requiring frequent updating with all the effort that entails it not functional; and • Neighbourhood plans need to be linked more directly into the duration of the Wiltshire Local Plan. Wiltshire Council has also offered meetings with the town and parish councils at ‘sometime in the future’ but wishes to wait until the government has responded to the consultation on proposed long-term changes to the national planning system before considering its own next steps. -

Salisbury Plain is one of the largest training areas in the UK. 1.1.2 A hybrid planning application for the masterplan proposals for delivery of the Army Basing Programme (ABP) 2020 at MoD Larkhill has recently been submitted, as has a detailed application for the development of two messes and single living accommodation on the northern area of the camp. This draft report describes the landscape and visual effects of a proposed further development of a medical and dental facility (the scheme), which would replace an existing, smaller building that currently occupies part of the site. -

07 Cunliffe 1686 13/11/09 13:48 Page 161 ALBERT RECKITT ARCHAEOLOGICAL LECTURE Continuity and Change in a Wessex Landscape BARRY CUNLIFFE Fellow of the Academy THE WESSEX LANDSCAPE with which we are concerned is an area of some 450 sq km of chalkland situated in the centre of the chalk uplands of southern Britain (Fig. 1). Its central position gives it a special character. It is, above all, a route node where the east–west ridgeways from the North Downs, the South Downs, Cranborne Chase and the Marlborough Downs converge with the north–south river routes, the Avon and the Test, which provide access, through the forests and heathlands of the Hampshire Basin, to the waters of the Solent beyond. But there is an ambivalence about the region. While open to influences from all direc- tions, this very openness endowed it with a strategic significance well understood by those who, in the past, wished to control the movements of peoples and commodities. As we will argue below, the region became a frontier zone for much of the latter part of the first millennium BC, dividing east from west. This block of downland was chosen for detailed study partly because of its commanding position in the landscape of central southern Britain but also because previous archaeological activity has provided an exten- sive database invaluable in developing a detailed research strategy. Most notable among the earlier work were the pre-war excavations of the Cunningtons and J. F. S. Stone focusing on Bronze Age and Iron Age settlements in eastern Wiltshire and the campaign of hillfort excavations Read at the Academy 23 October 2008. -

Parish Summary Newton Toney is a civil parish in the south of the county of Wiltshire. Its primary settlement is the village of Newton Toney, in the centre of the parish, which is approximately nine miles north east of Salisbury and 13 miles south east of Andover in Hampshire, about 30 miles north-west of Southampton and about 40 miles south-east of Bath. Nearby towns and villages include Cholderton, Allington, Amesbury and Grateley. The parish is made up of 2,386 acres and lies on Upper Chalk. Newton Toney's eastern boundary is also the county border, where Wiltshire ends, and Hampshire begins. In the 19th century heavy belts of trees were planted on the parish boundaries. The River Bourne runs through the centre of the village and roads and houses line either side of it. The highest land in the parish is 170 metres above sea level at Tower Hill in the south east corner. Portway, a Roman road to Salisbury, comes through the south eastern portion of the parish. There is a population of 381 according to the 2011 census comprising of 171 households. The parish of Newton Toney is in the ward of Bulford, Allington and Figheldean within the area of Wiltshire Council.
