[email protected] And yet, the sun is shining here Web Support in our offi ce. Why I hear you say? Tel: 01704 392313 Simple really… The hundreds [email protected] of emails, letters and phone Publisher calls we receive as anticipation builds for those who Betty Drummond are about to come to Blackpool keep us warmer than [email protected] sunshine ever could.

Managing Editor Yes, the organising of something like the CBA is months (literally) of hard work, logistics and Laurent Saletto inspiration to come up with something new each year. However, once I get to Blackpool, I know [email protected] of nothing more satisfying to the soul than the sight of hundreds of happy dancers, smiling as they Editorial Assistant meet each other and dance and chat for hours. Dawn Stainer The CBA started many moons ago and no one at that time truly realised it would become the [email protected] event it is today. Webmaster Paul Swift So, why is it important? Is it because people love a celebration of some of Line dance’s best? Or [email protected] is it simply that they get to dance non stop for hours? Or is it that its heady mix of glamour, top choreographers workshops and social occasion is irresistible? Dance Editor Steve Healy Well, yes, all of the above probably but it is much much more. This is the one occasion where [email protected] people have the chance of meeting other dancers, choreographers, DJ’s and celebrities from Assistant Dance Editor every corner of the world and forge real friendships. Kath Butler [email protected] Do you know many events where dancers and celebrities mingle as freely? Where people learn so many new dances from so many wonderful choreographers and instructors? And where every Advertising Sales single person is treated as the VIP they truly are, well known or not? No, me neither. Chris Chew Tel: 01704 392338 [email protected] When the CBA started out, it was about celebrating all the very best from the year just gone. Circulation Manager Today, it is almost more about the social dancers who get to spend the most amazing time together, Phil Drummond have raucous fun, and dance from morning to night. And of course, it still is about celebrating [email protected] those without whom there would not be any dancing at all, musicians, DJ’s, choreographers and instructors. Ultimately the CBA is about the joy of being a dancer and allows you to leave your Design Team worries at the door of the hotel for three blissful days and nights. Dave Clement, Amy Houghton, Emma Lyon, David Atherton, I touched upon how lucky and special Line dancers are last month and it is never more evident William Clarke and Ian McCabe than at the CBA. I remember one year when in sub zero temperatures, everyone had to stand in [email protected] the car park as a fire alarm had gone off. It was Sunday Party night and many only wore leotards Photography and tights (you know who you are). Did we hear a moan? Did we hear a complaint? Nah, not Line Tom Bennett dancers. Instead the nearby residents were treated to an impromptu version of “New York, New York” that I am sure most can still remember. And by the time you read these lines, the 13th CBA Credits may have come and gone, but happy dancers everywhere will have tons of memories they will ‘Boot Logo’ courtesy of London Boots Ltd. treasure and can start looking forward to next year’s weekend of the year, the 14th CBA.

Maureen and Michelle celebrated the New Year with an unusual Ice themed social. There was no time for The Girls to get cold feet as dancers fi lled The Peace Memorial Hall, Penkridge, Staffs for a sell-out evening of Line dancing and fun. The dance fl oor shimmered with whites, blues and silver as dancers wore a variety of costumes and icy colours. Maureen and Michelle told us: “We decorated the hall to refl ect the theme of an Ice Palace and although temperatures outside also refl ected the Ice theme, the hall was full of warmth and enjoyment. We held an Ice quiz with a concealed Happy New Year message and numerous prizes. It was a wonderful evening of fun, friendship and celebration that left faces glowing as dancers departed into the icy outdoors.

Patricia Steffen and a group of her friends from Rhine Liners club in Dusseldorf, Germany visited England last November. They attended a Line dance weekend in Corby hosted by Alan and Fiona Haywood who had previously met the Rhine Liners on a visit they made to Dusseldorf. Patricia told us: “The weekend was spent with lots of dancing and fun. We went to some great socials and workshops held by Alan. On Saturday we had some free time which we mainly used for shopping.” Was she with Rick Guard and Steve Healy we ask? - Ed. What a great way to spend free time and that’s spending! Patricia added: “We met lots of lovely people from the Corby area and we are looking forward to meeting with them all again.”

The Girl In The Garden

If you have visited the Linedancer magazine website over the last few months you may have noticed some new dances performed by a girl in a garden. That girl is Helena-Jane the daughter of Margaret and Michael Parker. Michael told us: “Helena-Jane is also my Line dance partner and we have been dancing for about two years now after my wife introduced us to it. We decided it might be fun to choreograph our own dance and when I heard the song They sung by Jem I immediately knew that had to be our fi rst dance which we called So Sorry. Helena put the steps together in an afternoon and tried it out in the garden just to see if it worked to the music. It has been a fantastic experience that we have done some more since.” They have even tried a bit of teaching, Michael adds: “I must say that I am completely in awe of the teachers. It is not as easy as they make it look. We owe our enthusiasm to Lynda and Mandy, Quickdraw with Charlie and Baz who have guided us. Other talented teachers running classes in the area are Gill of Crystal Cats and Elaine Wright of Duston.” It’s quite cold outside at the moment I think the Girl in the Garden might just have to do the dancing inside.

Have you heard of Orchard Road in Singapore? It is THE shopping avenue of the city and Christmas 2008 proved quite different for people there. Imagine hundreds of Line dancers having the best time of their lives in a sparkly, spangly, jolly, and oh-so-busy road…. The dance they chose was Wildcats Go by Mei Ling. Today she says: “I teach mostly at fi tness centres and a couple of private groups. In total I conduct a minimum of 12 classes a week. “ She also completed her certifi cation as a Line dance teacher with the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD), Associate level (Line Dance) and got a high commendation.

Early this year, Mei Ling was invited to Japan by Hiro Suzuki for his annual ‘Tokyo Crazy Country Dance Festival’. Mei Ling says: “Hiro asked me to teach several dances during the workshop and also suggested I teach one of my own. That’s what started me choreographing. My fi rst dance: Born to Rock.”

Mei Ling is a determined dancer, and though she had to give up competition in favour of her family, she has managed to achieve other levels of satisfaction by becoming a well known and appreciated choreographer. Lonely Hearts (143bpm) is one of the liveliest numbers on the album and again it is more akin to the stuff the Mavericks were playing in the nineties. The 13th Crystal Boot was, as we predicted, a vintage year!

In this section, you can relive very special moments of the three day weekend many think of as THE Line dance event of the year.

Behind the scenes... Linedancer magazine has always been proud to host the Crystal Boot Awards and we hope that those of you who joined us this year truly enjoyed it. If you have never been, we hope this section can capture a little of the magic created in Blackpool.

Lastly, don’t forget that we are already taking bookings for 2010, and as last year, it looks as if the event will be a Awards galore... sell out in no time.

See you there!

Entertainment at its best...

we are still relatively fresh. Then on Sunday the program is geared to the improver level, so everyone can relax a little and not feel too overloaded. Another thing is that there is always an interpreter (usually me) on stage to translate for the guest instructors who come from overseas. Just learning the steps to a dance in English isn’t such a problem, but since most of the dancers don’t speak much English, it’s a big help to have what the instructor is saying translated into Japanese.
