Presidents Report #2…. May 2009 G'day Mounties & welcome to this edition of the Sledger. Since we last communicated the club has had mixed fortunes, going down to Chelsea was a real disappointment but then backing up against newly promoted Langwarrin with a solid, hard fought win. After 4 rounds we sit in 4th place on percentage (3 - 1) but equal 2nd on points. League leaders Seaford continue to set the pace & we need to be continually looking to improve to match their yard- stick. Pines this week at Pines is another "must win" game for all grades....the Seniors to cement their spot in the top 5; the Reserves to climb back in & the Under 18's to make sure we remain within reach of the 5. Good luck to all the teams - we all know exactly what we need to do to win. Details on the last 2 rounds are contained in the Coaches' match reports later.

Stalwarts & Legends Club success is something we talk about frequently - most often in the context of on field success...winning & playing finals. However it can be argued that off field success is even more important. Every club has a committee that toil away during the season, most often there for a few years then take a break - however there are others who are around year in & year out doing various jobs & tasks that most often go unnoticed but are critical to our off-field success. If you've ever had one of the famous MEFC burgers you'll know exactly what I'm talking about....Leigh Hutton & his sidekick Bob Daley are like an old married couple (just don't ask which one wears the pants) but both guys are institutions around the place. For years they have been weathering (look at their faces & you'll agree) the cold & rain outside the club cooking & selling these wonderful burgers raising considerable money for the club. It's not just from noon til 3pm for the guys - they are at the club from before 9am every home game cutting onions, slicing rolls (there's a special process there too) & preparing for the barbie. Guys - your support & hard work does not go unnoticed - we all appreciate everything you do for us. Thanks for your tireless commitment to the club & please make mine with onions & mustard.

Sponsors This week I'd like to highlight 3 of our valued sponsors - [email protected] ; Vinnies Pizza & Barmah Park Winery - throughout the season these local businesses provide the weekly awards to our best players in all 4 sides. Over the course of the season this is 80 awards from each of them...all 3 also support either the junior football club & cricket clubs (or all 3) as true local Mt.Eliza community supporters. Special thanks to - * Brenda Wilkerson - [email protected] has been with us for a couple of years now & also contributes weekly awards to all the junior sides...Brenda contributes 300+ haircut awards each season which is a huge effort & greatly appreciated. * Tony Kafrouni - Vinnies Pizza have supported us for a number of years both with cash, pizza awards & also for special nights during the season when a meat lovers or Vinnies special hits the spot late at night. * Paul & Tony Williams from Barmah Park who are life long Mounties with Paul & his brother playing for many seasons & Tony a supporter for 30+ years. It's a great spot for a casual lunch, a wine tasting or breakfast...or as Twinkles, Pete Cranwell & myself can attest you can have a wine with your breakfast...bacon, eggs, toast & pinot ! Good luck this week....see you at Jack's Bar (CBs) for our after game function....this is a great opportunity to get together away from the club atmosphere, enjoy each others company, have a few drinks & laughs plus support one of our major sponsors. PS. Details for the Annual Ball and Golf Day are included further in this edition . See you all there! Haydn. MOUNT ELIZA FOOTBALL CLUB INC. ABN 94 836 443 199 P.O. Rd.3 v Chelsea Mt.Eliza 12.12.84 – A.Newman 8, T.Strickland 2, L.House 1, R.Heasley 1 Lost to Chelsea 13.18.96 The first quarter saw Chelsea kick the first 3 goals of the game, the first after a couple of minutes from a downfield free kick, the second from a turnover 35 out and the third from loose defensive work. We hit back in the latter part of the term, kicking the next three goals, with Keegan Emmons passing to Stricko who goaled from 50 out in front, the second when Stricko gathered off the pack in the square and recruit Adrian Newman kicked his first for the Club, after receiving a high 40m out. At quarter time we trailed by just a point. Rob D’Orazio collected 7 touches and 5 marks while Jay Neratzoglou had 10 touches across half back. We laid 15 tackles for the quarter but the delivery into the forward line was pretty ordinary. The 2 nd quarter saw Chelsea open brightly again, kicking the first couple, as they used the ball well going forward for their first and the next coming from an advantaged free kick. A Lyle House partially smothered kick forward found Newman who grabbed the ball and snapped a goal out of nowhere and the half time scores saw Chelsea leading by 9 points (5.9 to 4.6) although they probably should have been further ahead. Corey Hamilton collected 7 touches for the quarter. Dylan Emmons kicked forward to Newman who marked and goaled from 40 out to kick the first for the 3 rd quarter after 7 minutes, before they kicked the next a minute later. A great tackle from Newman saw him rewarded and he kicked his 3 rd from 35 out. A 50 metre penalty saw Chelsea kick a goal from 15 out and they kicked another soon after when we couldn’t manage to touch a long shot at goal that just went through. A great kick forward from D’Orazio once again saw Newman mark and goal from 40 out and we ended the quarter well when Rohan Heasley crumbed a goal off a big pack contest at full forward at the 30m mark. We went in at three quarter time trailing by just 3 points. Another Chelsea goal from a free opened the final quarter before Gormley passed off to Newman who booted his 6 th . A Housey long bomb bounced in the goal square where Newman slotted through another to see us hit the lead at the 12 minute mark. A minute later Pendles found Newman who took a strong mark 20 out and kicked his 8 th goal. We led by 10 points half way through the final quarter. From this point on we totally lost the plot, Chelsea kicking the next two goals from 50m penalties, and when Dan Gormley was sent off (For the remainder of the game) another Chelsea goal was the result. If that wasn’t bad enough we gave away our 4 th 50m penalty for the game (Double figures for the season!) and they happily kicked another to seal the game. Housey ran into an open goal, after a Chelsea turnover to kick the last of the game, but it was a disappointing loss, one that we had virtually handed to the opposition. Adrian Newman was the standout player with 8.2 from his 12 kicks and 6 marks, Neratz had plenty of the ball with 24 and Dave Barton, Pendles and Heasley contested well throughout.

Rd.4 v Langwarrin Mt.Eliza 15.18.108 – T.Strickland 5, L.House 3, I.Zwar 2, C.Hamilton 2, R.Cranwell 1, A.Newman 1, J.Clayton 1 Defeated Langwarrin 13.10.88 Coming up against a team that had lost by 20 goals the week before, we were primed for a big game and things started well when Rohan Heasley passed to Lyle House who kicked a long goal inside the first minute. Langwarrin kicked their first after 10 minutes. Corey Hamilton goaled after receiving a high tackle in the pocket and “Hutchy” kicked his first with a right foot snap out of the pack, and they kicked a goal after a free kick in the goal square. A brilliant 45m pass from House set up Stricko who goaled from 40 just prior to the siren. We held a 4.3 to 2.4 lead, with tackling, shepherding and pressure across the ground a feature. Rob D’Orazio, Heasley and House were handy contributors.

The 2 nd term was a low scoring affair with Langy kicking 3 goals to our one (Stricko marking and goaling from the square). They went in at half time leading by a point as we turned the footy over a number of times. The Skipper, D’Orazio, Lloyd Williams and Hammo gathered plenty of the ball, but all in all it wasn’t a great 1 st half. Stricko kicked the first of the 3 rd term with a goal on the run inside the first minute. The next resulted from good run from the backline and debutant Johnny Bange who delivered forward to see Jimmy Clayton snap a great goal around the corner. Langy replied with one of their own before House kick another after receiving a kicking in danger free 35 out. Unfortunately we lost “Hutch” after he was accidently kneed in the head and he was unable to come back on. They kicked another goal, this time from a free kick soon after. Great run from Jay Neratzoglou down back and Jimmy Clayton through the wing sent the ball forward where Tim Strickland bounced a miraculous goal through from deep in the pocked, celebrations very reminiscent of the injured Coach! Langy kicked the final goal of the term too easily 30 seconds later to reduce the deficit to just a couple of goals at three-quarter time. We showed good intensity throughout, but missed some easy opportunities at goal that kept the opposition in the game. Booth (8), Clayton (8), Williams (7) and Strickland (2 goals) were becoming influential. The final quarter started in goal for goal fashion, with Langwarrin getting the first, to get their crowd going, before Corey Hamilton kicked his first from 40 out. They marked and goaled from the square as did Housey a couple of minutes later at the other end. When Darren Booth was laid out from an off the ball incident and he had to come off, (Would return soon after), we gave away another 50m penalty that resulted in a goal and another Langy goal a minute late saw the scoreboard even right up. A great tackle from Ian Zwar in our forward line saw him rewarded with a goal from 40 out, but once again they managed to answer with one of their own. Debutant Ryland Cranwell received from Jimmy Clayton and calmly slotted through his first Senior goal with a 45m post high kick that never looked like missing! Stricko kicked his 5 th for the match on the goal line, after receiving a handball from Zwar after a throw in. The final goal came on the siren, when Pendles passed to Zwar who marked on the lead and slotted his 2nd . Leading stats gatherers were Jay Austerberry with 24, Williams (24), Booth (23) and Clayton (21) and better players were Booth, Stricko, Pendles and Johnny Bange. A battling win, with our best form yet to be displayed – Hopefully we can get close to our best this week at Pines.

Reserves

Rd.3 v Chelsea Mt.Eliza 9.12.66 – R.Cranwell 5, H.Barclay 2, S.Wettenhall 1, N.Brodie 1 Defeated Chelsea 6.11.47 Best: R.Cranwell, D.Kent, P.Trump, R.Curwood, N.Brodie We came up against a side below us on the ladder that had a couple of senior players coming back from injury which seemed to give them plenty of confidence. They had a real red hot go and looked the goods early. Our boys rallied under the leadership of Noonan, tempting them with some cheap ones early whilst collecting a couple of free kicks, 50m penalties and subsequent goals. The game swung for a while with Chelsea occasionally threatening, but the four points weren’t ours until Ryland Cranwell stuck his hand up and provided the spark. Nathan Brodie was outstanding, pulling in 15 marks, Sam Wettenhall was consistent all day, Damien Kent had a heap of the footy and ‘Hank’ Bolger never gets beaten.. Good win – Well done boys! Rd.4 v Langwarrin Mt.Eliza 6.9.45 – D.Gilby 2, L.Young 1, R.Dunne 1, P.Trump 1, B.Landry 1 Lost to Langwarrin 10.11.71 Best: R.Curwood, P.Trump, J.Cole, A.Bolger, B.Crowder, C.Derrick After two good wins on the trot the boys were back at home to face a winless Langwarrin. The boys were relaxed and happy in the rooms expecting to cruise out there and get the chocolates. As we are a team with no superstars, minus Johnny Bange, Ry Cranwell and Sam Wettenhall (all called up to the Seniors), anything less than 21 contributors would not be good enough to get the points. We found ourselves 7 goals down at half time and although we fought hard in the second half our lacklustre efforts early sealed our fate. Ryan Curwood was best by a mile, Trumpy was consistent for 4 quarters, Cole was in and under as usual, Crowds was good and as usual 'Hank' Bolger never gets beaten, but unfortunately too many guys were down on the day.

Under 18’s

Rd.3 v Chelsea Mt.Eliza 8.15.63 – D.McMurray 3, T.Limon 2, M.Wilson 1, W.Turner 1, T.Stanley 1 Lost to Chelsea 12.4.76 Best: Will Turner, Mitch Wilson, Michael Cleary, Jarrod Shepherd, Tim Clarke, Callum Savio The game result was obviously very disappointing given we started the game quite well. In fact the trend over the last two weeks has been somewhat similar. Our first quarter efforts have been good. Against Chelsea our work rate early was good as indicated by our tackling pressure 14 first quarter tackles and 16 run pasts. We controlled possession but did not make the most of it on the scoreboard. In the second we had enough of the ball, laid 14 tackles but dropped off with only 10 run pasts. 5 tackles 10 run pasts in the third and 6 tackles 7 run pasts in the 4 th reflect the drop off in our work rate. A few things stood out as the game progressed. OUR INTENSITY: (How hard and fast you act, attack the ball, contest, run!) Good early fell away to the point we lacked any real intensity as a team in the last two quarters. OUR WORK RATE: Good early pathetic in the second half bar a few individuals. OUR DECISION MAKING: As fatigue set in we turned the footy over too easily. They sat an extra man back in the last quarter. On several occasions early in the last we won the ball and just blazed away long to give them the ball back. We have been working on our kicking skills all season, hitting targets over 25m- 35m. We want to avoid blind long kicks hoping one of our forwards will get it. Lift the eyes (use your vision), aim to kick to a target in space. This requires players up field to be moving and players around the ball carrier to support (block/shepherd/talk) A few players made significant contributions during the game. Will Turner laid 5 tackles (all in the fist half!), had 5 run pasts (rp) and was clean with the footy – Will trains really well - his preseason began in November 2008 and is reaping the rewards for his hard work. Mitch Wilson laid 3 tackles and had 3 rp (can up this) but was fierce in his attack on the footy – needs a few mates to follow his example. Jarrod Shepherd 6rp and Mitch Williams 7rp provided the sort of run we needed from many more players. Bryce 3tackles & 4rp and Tim C 4 tackles & 5rp all achieved in first 3 quarters will get better after returning from injury. Zac Kurts laid 7 tackles which is great but had 0 rp which is crucial for our half backs. Jack Fulham showed great determination to compete in the ruck and come back after a heavy knock in his first game in the U18s. Cal Savio moved up the ground this week in a new role and was good in the first half. Michael Cleary competed hard at CHB (0rp) as did Sam Turner with 4 tackles but only 2rp. Tom Limon (1t & 1rp) was lively up forward early providing a leading target and will benefit from goal kicking practice. Simmo flashed in and out of the game. Todd Stanley showed us he can attack the ball aggressively. Dylan McMurray kicked 3 goals but needs to contribute more to forward line pressure and get in front more often. In order for our team to improve and achieve success we require more players working hard – tackling, running hard to create run, find space or support a mate for longer periods in a game. We are leaving too much to too few. Continued over page….

Rd.4 v Langwarrin Mt.Eliza 6.8.44 – N.Brett 3, A.Simpson 1, B.Hayes 1, J.Anwyl 1 Lost to Langwarrin 11.10.76 Best: Michael Cleary, Bryce Hayes, Jarrod Shepherd, Nick Brett, Mitch Williams In the contest for 3 quarters this week – that’s a gradual improvement. Our intensity was quite good at times throughout the game but skill errors, fumbles at crucial times meant we lacked quick ball movement into the forward line. Disappointing last quarter (no-one took responsibility for #33) need to continue working on fitness. Positives: Brendan Clarke’s return and first up game was good- attacked the ball at speed-great! Michael Cleary’s willingness to provide a contest and put in an honest effort no matter where he plays. Bryce Hayes’ work rate. Lubes’ efforts to give us some run out of the backline…7 RP’s Simmo following instructions to work hard to be front & centre crumbing…4 RP’s Nick Brett’s accuracy in front of goal. James Anwyl’s intensity at contests and 5 tackles up forward. Sam Barnes comes on and hits a contest with genuine aggression and great attack on the ball. Tim Clarke providing options by running past…5 RP’s Mitch Williams 6 tackles. Will Turner 5 tackles. Titch’s good use with the footy to hit targets. Shaun Walker’s clean ball handling and composure with the footy. Pines at Pines …prepare well this week! Don’t look for excuses, lay blame for our poor start. Get to work let’s fix what we can and I expect to see improvement in the above areas. We must remain positive and realize we require every player to commit to improving, working hard on the track and supporting each other by voice and action.
