    Buick Gran Sport Club of America Richard Lassiter An affiliated 625 Pine Point Circle 912-244-0577 Chapter of: Valdosta, GA 31602 http://www.buickgsca.com/ Volume 5 Issue 4 Winter 1999 "Electrafied" GSX The roots of Michael Thurman's interest in Buicks dates back to 1972, when his grandfather purchased a 1972 Buick Electra 225 2-door new off the showroom floor. The Electra had a big block Buick 455 4bbl engine with power everything all wrapped up in Cortez Gold with a brown vinyl top and a brown interior. Mike's grandfather drove the Electra for 10 years and in 1982 sold the car to Mike's parents. They in turn drove the Buick until 1988 and after 110,000 miles the Electra was about to go to the scrap yard. The engine ran great, but the body was in bad shape. At the age of 15 Mike stepped in due to his interest in cars and started a project. After a year had passed and lots of new metal, paint, tires, and some new interior, he had not only his first car, but his first Buick. The engine was basically untouched with some bolt on items like a starter, alternator, and a carb rebuild. Mike drove the Electra for seven years and added another 100,000 miles. During those seven years, he owned two other Electras, a 1969 LeSabre, and two Skyhawks, not to mention many other "project" cars. Mike was sure hooked on Buicks! While enjoying the Electras, one of the Buicks Mike had always wanted was a Skylark or a GS.

The weather has warmed up (alot as of late), the sun is shinning, and if the last meet- ing is any indication, the Buicks are back on the road again where they belong! The meeting last month was at the Manner's and was very well done, anyone who wants to know how a garage should be set-up should check out Denny's east stall, what an impressive layout for working on a car. That was also the largest meeting with almost 70 people and a large number of guests. If you didn't make it you definitely missed out on a great time of fel- lowship. They have released the hotel info for the National next year in South Bend and we will be talking about that more at the next meeting. There will be reports coming out about that as Roberta did make it down and can give us the inside scoop on what is going on and what secrets we might want to know (like apparently the guys on the east coast are afraid to drive their Buicks and trailer them every where). There are alot of events coming up in the next couple months, not the least is Back to the Bricks. So please check the calendar and keep appraised as we would like a great club participation at these events. His parents, Larry and Fran Barre, were willing to help their son out in his quest so Dennis and his dad went shopping. The search went on without finding a really nice solid Chevelle when one day Larry was at a car auction in the summer of 1988 and spotted a nice 1971 Skylark. He called Dennis and described the car to him as a triple black southern car with no rust and it looked very much like the body style of the Chevelle. Dennis responded if it really looks that good, try and get it for me. Larry was able to seal the deal and bring the Skylark home. Since Larrys mother lived right next door he parked it in her garage and shut the door. When Dennis was finally able to talk to his dad and ask if he was able to buy the car, Larry told him, No, it went for way to much money. Right away Dennis was depressed that he missed out on his first car. When Dennis came home from school that day, Fran told Dennis to go next door to Grandma's house and get something out of the garage. Dennis, still steaming about a missed opportunity, didn't want to go there and he pitched a fit.

He kept bragging that the car could smoke the tires for as long as you could keep your foot in it. John never really took this seriously because after all he was a Chevy guy. John's curiosity was aroused when his friend said the car turned some 13-second E.T.s at the track and beat a few Chevrolets in the process. John was still in disbelief, but curious. About 6 months later his friend called and said that he was regretfully selling his GS and if John knew anyone who was interested to let him know. John kept thinking maybe the stories are all true about "Buick Power" and maybe he'll take a ride, but of course he wouldn't buy. One week went by and John's curiosity was overwhelming. When John told Ron that he would like to take the GS for a ride, Ron cracked a smile on his face as if he knew John was going to buy it. Ron threw him the keys and said have fun. John asked Ron to come with but Ron said he trusted him. John got in the red bomber and turned the ignition key only to hear the rumble of 360 horses and drove it around until he could find a safe secluded area for testing purposes.

My 4 year old granddaughter told me that she was 810-728-3133 going to pre-school on the first day of winter so she needed Secretary to bring her snow pants, mittens and scarf, even though it Jane Zitterkoph [email protected] was 45 degrees.
