2014 Chevrolet SS: Performance Sedan with Racing DNA DAYTONA, Fla., Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, 12:01 a.m. EST – As Chevrolet's first V-8, rear-wheel-drive performance sedan since 1996, the new Chevrolet SS is designed to deliver performance on the street and on the track. The 2014 Chevrolet SS will debut this weekend at the Daytona International Speedway as the SS racecar makes its NASCAR debut during the Daytona 500. "The Chevrolet brand was largely built on the strength of rear-drive performance sedans, yet it's been 17 years since we've offered one," said Mark Reuss, president of General Motors North America. "The all-new Chevrolet SS fills that void and fills it better than any other vehicle in the brand's rich history. The comfort, convenience, spaciousness and V-8 power make the SS a total performance package unlike any other on the road today." The Chevrolet SS benefits from the proven, race-tested, global rear-wheel drive architecture that is the foundation for the Camaro, Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle and Holden's VF Commodore. The Chevrolet SS is powered by the LS3 Chevrolet V-8, expected to deliver 415 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. Also used in the 2013 Chevrolet Corvette, the LS3 displaces 6.2 liters, more than the 5.5-liter V-8 powering the Chevrolet SS NASCAR competitors. The LS3 is married to a six-speed automatic transmission, which can be shifted manually using TAPshift paddles mounted on the steering wheel. With an aggressive 3.27 final-drive ratio, the Chevrolet SS accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in about five seconds – making it one of the quickest sedans on the market. -

The Electra had a big block Buick 455 4bbl engine with power everything all wrapped up in Cortez Gold with a brown vinyl top and a brown interior. Mike's grandfather drove the Electra for 10 years and in 1982 sold the car to Mike's parents. They in turn drove the Buick until 1988 and after 110,000 miles the Electra was about to go to the scrap yard. The engine ran great, but the body was in bad shape. At the age of 15 Mike stepped in due to his interest in cars and started a project. After a year had passed and lots of new metal, paint, tires, and some new interior, he had not only his first car, but his first Buick. The engine was basically untouched with some bolt on items like a starter, alternator, and a carb rebuild. Mike drove the Electra for seven years and added another 100,000 miles. During those seven years, he owned two other Electras, a 1969 LeSabre, and two Skyhawks, not to mention many other "project" cars. Mike was sure hooked on Buicks! While enjoying the Electras, one of the Buicks Mike had always wanted was a Skylark or a GS. -

The Story of our 1941 Buick Roadmaster sedan from North Carolina By Earl D. Beauchamp, Jr. If I had to go back to the very beginning, it would be 1952 when I was 14 years old. That is when I first became virally interested in old cars. Now old cars, to me, were the years I remembered during my short lifetime, which was the 1930s and 1940s. Most of the books and magazines of the time, specifically MOTOR TREND, dealt with cars specified as “Classic Cars”, as defined by the fledgling Classic Car Club of America (CCCA). I religiously read Robert Gottlieb’s monthly column called “Classic Comments”. Around 1953 Mr. Gottlieb wrote and published a book called “Classic Cars”. I believe it was in that book where he made the statement that “no Buick was ever a “Classic Car” or something to that effect. Well, my family was a Buick family, or had been until hard times caused my parents to trade their 1939 Buick in on a 1951 Plymouth (in 1958 they went back to Buick for the rest of their lives). That statement by Mr. Gottlieb stuck in my young craw, and I never got over it. In 1955 I was allowed to get my first car, and it was a 1939 Buick Special sedan optionalized with dual sidemount fenders and a full pleated leather interior. It had belonged to a family friend. Now, I was convinced this car had to be a “Full Classic” and I wrote to Mr. Gottlieb and asked him. Then, in 1956 he wrote a second book called “Classics and Special Interest Cars.” Although he never answered my letter; in that book he mentioned a car like mine and said it was not a “Classic” but would be considered a “Special Interest Car”. -

As part of its mission to reduce fatalities and injuries, since model year 2001 NHTSA has included rollover information as part of its NCAP ratings. One of the primary means of assessing rollover risk is the static stability factor (SSF), a measurement of a vehicle’s resistance to rollover. The higher the SSF, the lower the rollover risk.
