July 2013 Anna Pilz University of Liverpool 2013 Abstract ‘The Return to the People’: Empire, Class, and Religion in Lady Gregory’s Dramatic Works Anna Pilz This thesis examines a selection of Lady Gregory’s original dramatic works. Between the opening of the Abbey Theatre in 1904 and the playwright’s death in 1932, Gregory’s plays accounted for the highest number of stage productions in comparison to her co-directors William Butler Yeats and John Millington Synge. As such, this thesis analyses examples ranging from her most well-known and successful pieces, including The Rising of the Moon and The Gaol Gate, to lesser known plays such as The Wrens, The White Cockade, Shanwalla and Dave. With a focus on the historical, bibliographical, and political contexts, the plays are analysed not only with regard to the printed texts, but also in the context of theatrical performances. In order to re-evaluate Gregory’s contribution to the Abbey, this thesis is divided into three chapters dealing with dominant themes throughout her career as a playwright: Empire, class, and religion. Young Irelanders are numerous in Wexford and Meath and are the worst party at present to deal with. Great question at present is the dis-endowment of the Protestant Church.

The Townlands of Clontuskert 03/09/2009 10:31 Page 407 The Townlands of CHAPTER Clontuskert 21 The ‘Longford’Townlands Ballymanagh Ballymanagh is a townland of 450 acres, situated in the north-eastern part of the parish of Clontuskert. The name is from the Irish ‘Baile Manach’ meaning ‘monk’s townland’ or ‘monk’s land’. Perhaps the monks referred to were the monks in the Old Abbey adjacent to Ballymanagh. In the 1838 map, the townland of Ballymanagh, which has three ringforts, is divided into fields of varying sizes, some quite large. Whitehall Bridge is shown on the 1892 map as midway on the western border, adjoining the townland of Stream. The northern boundary is the Ballinure River crossed by Clontuskert Bridge, near Whyte’s house. A smithy is marked on the southern border across from Nee’s garage. In all, on this map, there are six sets of buildings, including Ballymanagh Lodge. An east-west footpath crosses the townland towards the southern end and only two ringforts are marked. In the Tithe Applotment Books, Thomas Shadwell is recorded as paying tithes on 272 acres. According to Griffith’s Valuation of 1856, Allan Pollok was the landlord. Bairéad Bealtaine 2013 Lists of Provosts, Bailiffs and Sheriffs of the City of Dublin This work is an attempt to produce a full list of Provosts and Bailiffs of Dublin City from the creation of the office, using such primary sources as survive, albeit in transcription, as well as lists both from older sources and from more modern authorities. For over 600 years the civic administration of Dublin was in the hands of 27 men. The mayor (later the Lord Mayor), two senior officials and 24 aldermen. The aldermen, nominally representatives of the guilds, were a self-perpetuating group - when an alderman died, resigned (the office was for life) was elected to a higher office or (as happened a few times in those days) was impeached, the remaining aldermen elected a replacement. The two senior officials were called Provosts or Bailiffs until April 21st 1548, when, at Westminster. Edward VI, “with consent of the Protector, Edward, Duke of Somerset, and Council issued letters patent constituting the existing Bailiffs of the city of Dublin [as] Sheriffs, and incorporating the city under the style of one Mayor, two Sheriffs and the commonalty and citizens of Dublin. The city is to be distinct from the county of Dublin, and City of shall be styled the county of the city of Dublin.” Henceforth the two officials were Sheriffs. In a treaty of 1200 King John reiterated the treaties of his father, Henry II, and furthermore stated that “if any man within the King’s realm take toll of the citizens, the provost [note singular] of the city shall take distress for it”1.
