This is only available to passengers who live in the Borough of Gateshead. (ie you pay your Council tax to Gateshead Council) We will provide a taxi from your home to the coach joining point and return. £11.00 per person for outlying Gateshead areas Chopwell, High Spen, Highfield, Rowlands Gill, Greenside, Crawcrook, Ryton, Sunniside & Birtley £6.00 per person for all other villages within the Gateshead Borough. If you choose the door to door service you may be sharing a taxi with fellow travellers. Outside the Gateshead Area Gosforth Mormon Church, Fawdon Lane Westerhope End of Stamfordham Road Newcastle Bewick Street or Central Station Washington Galleries Washington Services North or South Pick up times for holidays and short breaks are tailored to each tour depending on where those booked live and the distance to the destination. Provided we can stick to a main route we may add to or remove from these points. For example, if you live en route between pick up points or if there is a group of people in a particular place. Pick up times will be given by telephone within 5 days of departure. .

EDITORIAL Another year has come and gone, and we trust that 1989 will be a happy and prosperous one for all our members. If our Society is to continue to flourish, however, it is essential that more members should play an active part in running its affairs. Ken Brown, our Secretary since 1983 (and acting Programme Organiser for the last year), is resigning at the Annual General Meeting in May, and Irene Blackburn, who is responsible for the Members' Interests and Second Time Around sections of the Journal, will be giving up her position as Research Editor later in the year. We are very grateful to them both for all the work they have done on our behalf. In addition to these two posts, we are still short of a Programme Organiser. If you know of anyone who might be willing to take on any of these jobs please let Ken Brown know as soon as possible - otherwise the Society may come to a grinding halt. One of the most important events of 1988 as far as the Society was concerned was the publication of the long-awaited Directory of Members' Interests. Its production entailed a great deal of hard work on the part of those responsible, and it also placed a severe strain on the Society's finances. In view of the fact that it was initially offered free to members (only the cost of postage and packing being charged), the demand for copies was disappointingly small. Copies are still available, and although now priced £2.75 each (post free to addresses in the U.K.), they are very good value.

Local bus links in Newcastle Designing a network to TYNE AND WEAR meet your needs INTEGRATED TRANSPORT AUTHORITY Public consultation 15 March - 4 June 2010 Local bus links in Newcastle Designing a network to meet your needs Public consultation People in Newcastle make 47 million bus journeys annually - that’s an average of more than 173 journeys a year for every resident! Nexus, Newcastle City Council and the Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority (ITA) want to make sure the network of bus services in the area meets residents’ needs. To do this, Nexus has worked together with bus companies and local councils to examine how current services operate and to look at what improvements could be made to the ‘subsidised’ services in the network, which are the ones Nexus pays for. We have called this the Accessible Bus Network Design Project (see below). We want your views on the proposals we are now making to improve bus services in Newcastle, which you can find in this document. We want to hear from you whether you rely on the bus in your daily life, use buses only occasionally or even if you don’t – but might consider doing so in the future. You’ll find details of different ways to respond on the back page of this brochure. This consultation forms part of the Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority’s Bus Strategy, a three year action plan to improve all aspects of the bus services in Tyne and Wear. EDITORIAL by the Time You Read This Our Conference Will Be Over, and the Autumn Session of Meetings Will Be Well Under Way
EDITORIAL By the time you read this our Conference will be over, and the Autumn session of meetings will be well under way. The Society continues to grow, and the various local groups are all flourishing. Various projects such as Census Indexing and M.I. Recording are proceeding, but more volunteers to assist in the work are always welcome. As mentioned in the last issue of the Journal, our Treasurer John Scott is retiring from the job after a stint of eight years, and in recognition of his long and devoted service he is to be made an Honorary Life Member of the Society. We were worried about finding a successor to take over from John, but fortunately a volunteer, Miss Cindy Winters, has come forward, and we wish her well in her new position. Liz Lyall, the prime mover in the organisation of our Annual Conferences, is also retiring, and we take this opportunity of thanking her for all the work she has put in to make our Conferences so successful. I trust that members will continue to submit articles and other items of interest for publication in the Journal. It is time we had a Durham parish in the `Know Your Parish' series: there have only been six (Medomsley, Heworth, Chester-le-Street, Washington, Tanfield and Hetton-le-Hole) since the series started more than eight years ago!
