Stadthalle a & B Stadthalle A & B Vogelweidplatz 14 1150 Vienna Audrey Birmingham (Dublin, IRL) Caroline Healy McGrory (Midlands, UK) Kevin McCormack (Dublin, IRL) Kristián Fišl (Prague, CZ) Registered by: Biagio Mineo, 2 July 2019 _______________________________________ Biagio Mineo (Feis Registrar) We are delighted to welcome CLRG dancers from all regions to the 2019 Vienna Feis run by Rafter School of Irish Dancing Vienna. This year’s feis marks the seventh time that it is organised by Rafter School. Please note that this year, we are again back to the location of 2018 – Stadthalle B. The hall has stands for the audience, there are numerous changing rooms in the basement and the adjacent Hall A is available for warmup/practice and results. The Feis will be run with three adjudicators for two floors and a stage (10x8m). A local caterer in the lobby of the hall will provide you with snacks and refreshments. In the hall, we will have a stall for shoes and dance supplies (Beats Irish Dance Wear) and possibly more. Stay tuned for more information via Facebook and our website www.viennafeis.at! For teachers, we will be offering our spacious teachers’ room with snacks, soft drinks, coffee and tea all day. This year, treblemakers are invited to get creative in terms of both costumes and steps – the ‘70s and ‘80s Themed Treble Reel is challenging you to think about the times of ABBA and Rick Astley, The Waltons and Magnum, P.I., just to give you a few ideas. There will be trophies for all winners and medals for runners-up. Unlike on previous Vienna Feis occasions, please note that this year, there will be no “Austrian National Championship”; although it was a great tradition, we decided to discontinue it as no feis in any other country is running a comparable competition. We’ll also have a raffle with tickets for € 2.50 each – there will be a prize for every ticket, with main prizes to be announced on the day. Rafter School Vienna would like to thank you for your support in previous years and looks forward to welcoming you again this year. Joan Rafter ADCRG, Lucia Rafter TCRG, Simon Zirkowitsch TCRG, Ellie Frank- Grossebner and the Feis Committee members wish all dancers the best of success and a great time in Vienna, the city of music and dancing! Entries will be accepted from persons currently registered with An Coimisiún. All competitions are OPEN to dancers from ALL REGIONS. 3. The lodgement of an entry will be taken to mean that teachers and pupils understand these rules and undertake to abide by them. 4. Objections must be lodged in writing within one hour of the announcement of the result of a competition accompanied by a fee of 40 Euro, which will be refunded if the objection is upheld. 5. Age will be taken as on 1st January 2019. Whatever age a dancer turns this year, in 2019, s/he will dance under that age all year long, e.g. if a dancer’s date of birth is 29 May 2007, he/she dances under 12 in the year 2019). Evidence of age may be requested, therefore dancers from Mainland Europe should have a valid ID with them in the event of a query as to their age. 6. The Adjudicators’ decisions are final. 7. Beginners Grade competitions are confined to dancers who have never won 1st or 2nd prize (also 3rd prize, please refer to rule 9) in any competition for that particular dance. In Beginners Grade competitions only basic steps may be performed. 8. Primary Grade competitions are confined to dancers who have never won 1st prize (or 2nd prize, please refer to rule 10) for that particular dance other than in Beginners Grade. 9. If a Beginner competition has 6 or more dancers, the first two places advance to the next grade, regardless of ties. If a Beginner competition has 11 dancers or more, then the first 3 places advance to the next grade regardless of ties. (RTME ruling Sept. 2007). 10. If a Primary competition has 6 or more dancers, the first place advances to the next grade. If a Primary competition has 11 or more, the first and second places advance to the next grade, regardless of ties (RTME ruling June 2011). 11. Where there are five dancers or less for Beginners, Primary and Intermediate competitions, the results will not affect their grading. 12. Intermediate Grade competitions are open to all dancers who have not previously won first prize for that particular dance in Intermediate or Open Grades under the same or higher age limits. If a dancer in Mainland Europe wins in Intermediate, they must advance into Open for the rest of the calendar year. If they do not win in Open, they may return to Intermediate at the start of the next calendar year. (RTME ruling Sept. 2007). 13. For all Beginner, Primary and Intermediate competitions (excluding trophy competitions) the 32 bar method will be applied. However, the number of bars to be danced may be lowered if this seems indicated to the organisers. All Open Championship dancers will be required to dance 48 bars of music in the reel and jig and 40 bars in the slip-jig and hornpipe. Two and three hands are danced to 40 bars of music. Ceíli and figure dances are subject to the rules applied at Oireachtasi. 14. Adult Preliminary Championships are open to Intermediate/Open level dancers who have never won a 1st, 2nd or 3rd place in Open Championship level and to dancers not participating in a full Open Championship at the same feis. Dancers will be required to dance 32 bars of music in the Reel (gents, ladies) or Slip Jig (ladies) in the light round, Heavy Jig or Hornpipe in the heavy round, and a Traditional Set. If there are more than 9 dancers in any competition, it will go to recall. Please note that these championships have been created for dancers who started Irish Dancing as ADULTS. 15. • Stepping Through Time, with Dance in Her Heart
Bruins Live 1 0 2nd Prd 2:10 Stepping through time, with dance in her heart By Kathy Shiels Tully GLOBE CORRESPONDENT MARCH 16, 2014 “I didn’t really want to teach. I just wanted to dance forever,” says Rita O’Shea, Boston’s grande dame of Irish dance. That changed when she was just 17, a dancer in her prime in her native Galway. O'Shea was selected by her Irish dance teacher, Eilis Ni Shim (Gaelic for Lily Simpson), to take over teaching classes. CONTINUE READING BELOW ▼ Simpson’s husband had suffered a heart attack, and unless someone else could step in, she said, she was going to close the school. O’Shea’s original plans — to become a schoolteacher — shifted from the classroom to the dance floor. Six decades later, she’s still teaching, although an ocean away from where she started. Today, classes are held through her school, the O’Shea-Chaplin Academy of Irish Dance. Established in Boston in the 1960s after O'Shea moved to the United States, the school is run by Rita and her daughter, Lisa Chaplin McAllister, also of Melrose and a championship dancer herself. In celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, O’Shea’s dancers will perform at 11:30 a.m.

Once again we have returned to the same venue with a refreshment area adjacent to the gym, a huge main hall and drama studio. As before, there is ample car parking with shops and a pub nearby! We are again delighted to have an excellent panel of adjudicators and musicians. Our Feis is a traditional one whereby children get the opportunity to dance several solos, separately from the Championship. This not only gives some pupils new to open valuable experience but gives others the opportunity to prepare for the Championship. Dances need to be aware however that in order to be eligible to compete in the Championship they must have completed in one light and two heavy solos on the day. The top five in the Championship are presented on a podium and receive a sash. The top three dancers receive a cup; the winner receives a tiara or plate to keep.
