Birds of Prey: un film che vorrebbe parlare di emancipazione femminile e magari fare ridere Il titolo inglese del film è Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn. Speriamo bene..

ARGOT ROBBIE SITS bouncing on the tip of a very large, very long tongue, laughing hysterically. It’s protruding from a statue of a woman’s head on a Burbank sound stage, which today has been decked out to represent a frightening abandoned funhouse. Sitting on another tongue opposite Robbie, also bouncing, are director Cathy Yan and screenwriter Christina Hodson, trying (not entirely successfully) to have a serious meeting in- between takes. This trio have formed a gang over the past four years, spearheading the movie Robbie has dreamed about since first playing the scene- stealing Harley Quinn — psychiatrist-turned- crazed criminal — in 2016’s DC comic-book adaptation Suicide Squad. Robbie, Yan and Hodson are having so much fun, you forget that the action scene they’re attempting to figure out (it involves a fight that takes placeinside an enormous slide) is one of the most complex in Birds Of Prey. Wearing her producer hat, Robbie starts running through the choreography for the fight. It’s immediately clear that she runs this show. She’s a popular boss. On Fridays, she chooses a different fancy dress theme. Today is ‘Hawaii’, hence a crew dressed in Hawaiian shirts and leis. Last week was St Patrick’s themed. Her cast and crew cannot stop effusing about her work ethic and intellect. Producer Bryan Unkeless even insists she’s the most impressive person he’s ever met. “I feel most fortunate about meeting Margot Robbie more than most any other person in my life,” he says. “Every day we’re worried about a hundred things, but we’re never worried about Margot.” When Robbie took on the role of Harley in David Ayer’s DC misfire, she adopted the character like a child she wanted to nurture.

Master’s Thesis “This Is a Forced Feminist Agenda:” IMDb users and their understanding of feminism negotiated in the reviews of superheroine films Author: Alžběta Budirská Supervisors: Johan Höglund and Jukka Tyrkkö Examiner: Magnus Levin Date: 31. 5. 2021 Term: VT2021 Subject: Linguistics and Literary Studies Course code: 5EN10E I declare that I have worked on this thesis independently, using only the sources listed in references. …………………………………………….. Bc. Alžběta Budirská Abstract The thesis examines how users of the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) negotiate feminism in their reviews of four superheroine films – Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, Birds of Prey: The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, and Wonder Woman 1984. By combining critical discourse analysis with methods of corpus linguists, this corpus-based study of over 18,000 reviews analyses the frequency of the topic of feminism in the reviews, words and topics associated with it and the way the reviewers reflect broader mediated discourse over the four films, and the role of IMDb as a space for these reviews. The findings show that feminism is still understood as an anti-male movement where female-led films are shielded from criticism by the mainstream media by the virtue of the lead’s gender, the superheroines are criticised for being overpowered particularly where they have no equal male supporting character and that perceived feminist messaging is usually written off as a forced political agenda or as an insincere cash grab made by corporates which effectively use feminism for promotion. It also reveals IMDb as a highly polarised platform where the users leaving 1- and 10-star reviews are generalized as representatives of different sides of the political spectrum (antifeminist vs feminist, conservative vs liberal) regardless of the actual content of the review.

Shifting between Shanghai and the neighboring provincial town of Jiaxing, the film centers on the intersecting stories of five characters, whose loose connections begin to fatefully intertwine: a down-on-his-luck pig farmer; a feisty home-owner defending her property; a lovestruck busboy; a rudderless rich girl; and an American expat pursuing the Chinese Dream. Their fates converge and collide as thousands of dead pigs are found floating down the Huangpu River. A universal human story set against the backdrop of globalization, drastic social change and increasing wealth inequality, Dead Pigs is the masterful feature debut of exciting filmmaker Cathy Yan (Birds of Prey), starring an international ensemble including Vivian Wu (Away), Mason Lee (Lucy), Zazie Beetz (Atlanta), Meng Li (A Touch of Sin), Haoyu Yang (The Wandering Earth), and David Rysdahl (The Family). Executive Produced by Jia Zhangke (Still Life) and Ali Wong (Always Be My Maybe). DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT This is a deeply personal story years in the making. Dead Pigs is a reunion of sorts -- a way for me to better understand my birth country, a place that has enthralled and confounded me ever since I left it in 1990 at the age of four.
