Gillette Museum of Arthropod Diversity, Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO 80523 Abstract A list of 1531 species ofLepidoptera is presented, collected over 15 years (1988 to 2002), in eleven southern West Virginia counties. A variety of collecting methods was used, including netting, light attracting, light trapping and pheromone trapping. The specimens were identified by the currently available pictorial sources and determination keys. Many were also sent to specialists for confirmation or identification. The majority of the data was from Kanawha County, reflecting the area of more intensive sampling effort by the senior author. This imbalance of data between Kanawha County and other counties should even out with further sampling of the area. Key Words: Appalachian Mountains, -

WISCONSIN ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY SPECIAL PUBLICATION No. 6 JUNE 2018 CHECKLIST OF WISCONSIN MOTHS (Superfamilies Mimallonoidea, Drepanoidea, Lasiocampoidea, Bombycoidea, Geometroidea, and Noctuoidea) Leslie A. Ferge,1 George J. Balogh2 and Kyle E. Johnson3 ABSTRACT A total of 1284 species representing the thirteen families comprising the present checklist have been documented in Wisconsin, including 293 species of Geometridae, 252 species of Erebidae and 584 species of Noctuidae. Distributions are summarized using the six major natural divisions of Wisconsin; adult flight periods and statuses within the state are also reported. Examples of Wisconsin’s diverse native habitat types in each of the natural divisions have been systematically inventoried, and species associated with specialized habitats such as peatland, prairie, barrens and dunes are listed. INTRODUCTION This list is an updated version of the Wisconsin moth checklist by Ferge & Balogh (2000). A considerable amount of new information from has been accumulated in the 18 years since that initial publication. Over sixty species have been added, bringing the total to 1284 in the thirteen families comprising this checklist. These families are estimated to comprise approximately one-half of the state’s total moth fauna. Historical records of Wisconsin moths are relatively meager. Checklists including Wisconsin moths were compiled by Hoy (1883), Rauterberg (1900), Fernekes (1906) and Muttkowski (1907). Hoy's list was restricted to Racine County, the others to Milwaukee County. Records from these publications are of historical interest, but unfortunately few verifiable voucher specimens exist. Unverifiable identifications and minimal label data associated with older museum specimens limit the usefulness of this information. Covell (1970) compiled records of 222 Geometridae species, based on his examination of specimens representing at least 30 counties. -

Characteristics of Mixed-Oak Forest Ecosystems in Southern Ohio Prior to the Reintroduction of Fire
United States Department of Characteristics of Mixed-Oak Agriculture Forest Service Forest Ecosystems in Northeastern Research Station Southern Ohio Prior to the General Technical Reintroduction of Fire Report NE-299 Abstract Mixed-oak forests occupied much of the Unglaciated Allegheny Plateau region of southern Ohio at the onset of Euro-American settlement (ca. 1800). Historically, Native Americans used fire to manage the landscape and fire was frequent throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries during extensive forest harvesting and then re-growth. Today, though mixed-oak forests remain dominant across much of the region, oak regeneration is often poor as other tree species (e.g., maples) are becoming much more abundant. This shift has occurred concurrently with fire suppression policies that began in 1923. A multidisciplinary experiment was initiated in southern Ohio to explore the use of prescribed fire as a tool to improve the sustainability of mixed-oak forests. This report describes the experimental design and study areas, and provides baseline data on ecosystem characteristics prior to prescribed fire treatments. Chapters describe forest history, an integrated moisture index, geology and soils, understory light environments, understory vegetation, tree regeneration, overstory vegetation, foliar nutrient status, arthropods, and breeding birds. Key words: Noctuidae, Condicinae, Chytonix, new species, annotated list of Eurasiatic species INTRODUCTION The genus Chytonix Grote, 1874 is one of the large Holarctic genera which was never revised. The taxonomic status and correct generic placement of certain taxa belonging to Chytonix sensu lato (including the taxa associated with Paroligia Warren, 1913) were clarified (e.g. Speidel 1992, Lafontaine & Schmidt 2010, etc.), but the real diversity of the genus (see e.g. Poole 1989) and the composition of local faunas is rather obscure in the most recent catalogues (Heppner & Inoue 1992, Chen 1999, Kononenko & Pinratana 2013, etc.). The exceptions are the catalogues dealing with the fauna of the northernmost part of the range of Chytonix like Japan, Korea, or the Russian Far East where only a limited number of species occur (see Sugi (in Inoue et al.) 1982, Kononenko et al. -

In 1995, the Funk Bottoms Wildlife Area was the subject of an ongoing series of insect surveys intended to establish benchmark information on arthropod diversity of wetlands in northeast Ohio. This article concentrates on the moths which were collected at ultraviolet light traps within the Funk Bottoms Wildlife Area. A companion report will follow focusing on the Coleoptera along with several orders of aquatic insects. 3252 specimens were identified to 306 species in 19 families. These species are classified as follows: Abundant = 34; Locally Abundant = 1; Common = 257; Locally Common = 2; Uncommon = 10; Rare = 1; and Special Interest = 1. OHIO J.
