A fervent Temperance advocate, he sat on the committees of the West London Band of Hope Union and the United Kingdom Alliance. He was active in local affairs, serving on Fulham Vestry for several years, and was at one time a prominent member of Fulham Borough Council as a member of the Progressive Party. He belonged to the Fulham Liberal Party. He interested himself in many causes, both local and national, and was connected with a large number of organisations, including the Imperial Alliance for the Defence of Sunday, the National Children's Homes, and the Fulham and South Kensington Young Men's Christian Association. He was a trustee of the Fulham Waste Lands and Lygon Almshouses, a school manager, a director of the Walham Green Building Society, and supported Fulham housing improvement schemes. DD/200 consists mainly of correspondence, cuttings, invitations and handbills connected with Palmer's involement in these spheres, all of which have been mounted into 'scapbooks'. In view of the bulk of the material involved, some deviations from normal listing practice have been necessary: (i) Listing It has been impractical to list each item. The practice instead has been to give a block description for each 'scapbook', and provide separate entries for items contained inside which have been considered of particular interest. In many cases items relating to the same subject are scattered over a number of pages. The practice in such cases has not usually been to list items individually, but either to give a block descrip tion with a list of relevant references, or to provide covering references when this seems more practical Hammersmith and Fulham Archives & Local History Centre The Lilla Huset 191 Talgarth Road London W6 8BJ 081-741 5159 e.g. Ref. Date Description DD/200/ 1l/l/69a-c; HD[? 1923] Cuttings 70aj Proposal to turn Earl's Court Exhibition ground into a public open space or 8/31-46 passim May 1920-June 1920 Cutting and correspondence & KD Opposition to proposed opening of Fulham parks for sport on Sundays John Henry Palmer has been.referred to as 'JHP* throughout (ii Numbering In many cases, volumes of pulpit notices, accounts, etc., have been re-used as scapbooks, and so items collected by Palmer have been pasted over the original information contained in the volumes. Where this is the case, each sheet in the volume has been paginated as in a printed book, and items pasted in have been given the page number, followed by an alphabetical sub-number. Therefore a single item pasted onto a re-used page would bs given the page number plus the letter 'a". Where the page was blank, a single pasted item has been given the page reference only, and more than one item pasted onto the same page would be alphabetically sub-numbered; the same procedure has been followed in numbering scapbooks which have not been put to any previous use. • Fulham Doctors of the Past *
FULHAM DOCTORS OF THE PAST * by A. L. WYMAN ORIGINALLY the manor of Fulham comprised both Fulham and Hammersmith but even early in the seventeenth century there was a Fulham side and a Hammersmith side, and the accounts were rendered separately. It was a village near London, situated on the Thames where the river was fordable and the gravelly soil suitable for an early settlement. This was the town where the church was built and the ferry plied to Putney. There were hamlets at Parsons Green and Walham Green and smaller ones at North End and Sands End. It was pleasant enough and convenient enough for London to attract the upper classes. The population was about 730 in the time ofEdward VI (1547/8) and over 2,000 towards the end ofthe seventeenth century. This would be in a population in England of about four million and in London of between 100,000-200,000 (1600). In Roque's map of 1813 we find much the same general pattern. The community was primarily a rural one, with employment on the land as husbandmen, gardeners, labourers, or on the river as fisherman and watermen. As late as 1801 the census shows more people engaged in agricultural pursuits than in trade. When we come to the doctors it is necessary to make a broad distinction between those who are associated with Fulham because they lived or died there and those who worked there. Some of the former were illustrious but for the most part their main activities were elsewhere and they did not provide any kind of medical service to the local inhabitants, as did the more obscure practitioners who lived and worked in the parish.
