How Uniform Was the Old Norse Religion?
II. Old Norse Myth and Society HOW UNIFORM WAS THE OLD NORSE RELIGION? Stefan Brink ne often gets the impression from handbooks on Old Norse culture and religion that the pagan religion that was supposed to have been in Oexistence all over pre-Christian Scandinavia and Iceland was rather homogeneous. Due to the lack of written sources, it becomes difficult to say whether the ‘religion’ — or rather mythology, eschatology, and cult practice, which medieval sources refer to as forn siðr (‘ancient custom’) — changed over time. For obvious reasons, it is very difficult to identify a ‘pure’ Old Norse religion, uncorroded by Christianity since Scandinavia did not exist in a cultural vacuum.1 What we read in the handbooks is based almost entirely on Snorri Sturluson’s representation and interpretation in his Edda of the pre-Christian religion of Iceland, together with the ambiguous mythical and eschatological world we find represented in the Poetic Edda and in the filtered form Saxo Grammaticus presents in his Gesta Danorum. This stance is more or less presented without reflection in early scholarship, but the bias of the foundation is more readily acknowledged in more recent works.2 In the textual sources we find a considerable pantheon of gods and goddesses — Þórr, Óðinn, Freyr, Baldr, Loki, Njo3rðr, Týr, Heimdallr, Ullr, Bragi, Freyja, Frigg, Gefjon, Iðunn, et cetera — and euhemerized stories of how the gods acted and were characterized as individuals and as a collective. Since the sources are Old Icelandic (Saxo’s work appears to have been built on the same sources) one might assume that this religious world was purely Old 1 See the discussion in Gro Steinsland, Norrøn religion: Myter, riter, samfunn (Oslo: Pax, 2005). -

Welcome to the Tre Lag Stevne in South Saint Paul, Minnesota. We were last in the Twin Cities area in 2009 in this same location. In a metropolitan area of this size it is not as easy to see the results of the Norwegian immigration as in smaller towns and rural communities. But the evidence is there if you look for it. This year’s speakers will tell the story of the Norwegians who contributed to the richness of American culture through literature, art, architecture, politics, medicine and science. You may recognize a few of their names, but many are unsung heroes who quietly added strands to the fabric of America and the world. We hope to astonish you with the diversity of their talents. Our tour will take us to the first Norwegian church in America, which was moved from Muskego, Wisconsin to the grounds of Luther Seminary,. We’ll stop at Mindekirken, established in 1922 with the mission of retaining Norwegian heritage. It continues that mission today. We will also visit Norway House, the newest organization to promote Norwegian connectedness. Enjoy the program, make new friends, reconnect with old friends, and continue to learn about our shared heritage. -
Using Optimization and Simulation to Evaluate Differentiated Stroke Treatment
Using optimization and simulation to evaluate differentiated stroke treatment Andreas Bergstrøm Aarnseth Erlend Moen Hov Industrial Economics and Technology Management Submission date: June 2018 Supervisor: Henrik Andersson, IØT Norwegian University of Science and Technology Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management Preface This thesis concludes our Master of Science in Industrial Economics and Technology Manage- ment at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. The objective of this thesis is to implement a model that enables differentiated treatment paths for stroke patients based on their diagnosis. At the same time, the general demand for emergency resources must be cov- ered. By supplementing existing models and methods, optimization will be used to determine optimal allocation of the available emergency units. A comprehensive simulation program is also developed for this thesis. This is used to evaluate the performance of the different opti- mization solutions. The work on this Master’s Thesis in Managerial Economics and Operations Research (TIØ4905) was carried out in the Spring 2018. We would like to thank the personnel at the Ambulance Service at St. Olav Hospital for providing us with necessary data and valuable inputs. We also would like to thank our supervisor, Professor Henrik Andersson, at the Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management, for constructive discussions and his in- valuable guidance. Tectonic Features of an Area N.E. of Hegra, Nord-Trøndelag, and Their Regional Significance — Preliminary Notes by David Roberts
Tectonic Features of an Area N.E. of Hegra, Nord-Trøndelag, and their regional Significance — Preliminary Notes By David Roberts Abstract Following brief notes on the low-grade metasediments occurring in an area near Hegra, 50 km east of Trondheim, the types of structures associated with three episodes of deformation of main Caledonian (Silurian) age are described. An outline of the suggested major stmctural picture is then presented. In this the principal structure is seen as a WNW-directed fold-nappe developed from the inverted western limb of the central Stjørdalen Anticline. A major eastlward closing recumbent syncline underlies this nappe-like structure. These initial structures were then deformed by at least twofur ther folding episodes. In conclusion, comparisons are noted between the ultimate fold pattern, the suggested evolution of these folds and H. Ramberg's experimentally produced orogenic structures. Introduction A survey of this particular area, situated north of the valley of Stjørdalen, east from Trondheim, was begun during the 1965 field-season and progressed during parts of the summers of 1966 and 1967 in conjunction with a mapping programme led by Statsgeolog Fr. Chr. Wolff further east in this same seg ment of the Central Norwegian Caledonides. Further geological mapping is contemplated, the aim being to eventually complete the 1 : 100,000 sheet 'Stjørdal' (rectangle 47 C). In view of the time factor involved in the comple tion of this work, and the renewed interest being devoted to the geological problems of the Trondheim region (Peacey 1964, Oftedahl 1964, Wolff 1964 and 1967, Torske 1965, Siedlecka 1967, Ramberg 1967), some notes on the tectonics of the Hegra area would seem appropriate at this stage. -

Homogenization of Norwegian Monthly Precipitation Series for the Period 1961-2018
No. 4/2021 ISSN 2387-4201 METreport Climate Homogenization of Norwegian monthly precipitation series for the period 1961-2018 Elinah Khasandi Kuya, Herdis Motrøen Gjelten, Ole Einar Tveito METreport Title Date Homogenization of Norwegian monthly 2021-04-30 precipitation series for the period 1961-2018 Section Report no. Division for Climate Services No. 4/2021 Author(s) Classification Elinah Khasandi Kuya, Herdis Motrøen Gjelten, ● Free ○ Restricted Ole Einar Tveito Abstract Climatol homogenization method was applied to detect inhomogeneities in Norwegian precipitation series, during the period 1961-2018. 370 series (including 44 from Sweden and one from Finland) of monthly precipitation sums, from the ClimNorm precipitation dataset were used in the analysis. The homogeneity analysis produced a 58-year long homogenous dataset for 325 monthly precipitation sum with regional temporal variability and spatial coherence that is better than that of non-homogenized series. The dataset is more reliable in explaining the large-scale climate variations and was used to calculate the new climate normals in Norway. Keywords Homogenization, climate normals, precipitation Disciplinary signature Responsible signature 2 Abstract Climate normals play an important role in weather and climate studies and therefore require high-quality dataset that is both consistent and homogenous. The Norwegian observation network has changed considerably during the last 20-30 years, introducing non-climatic changes such as automation and relocation. Homogenization was therefore necessary and work has been done to establish a homogeneous precipitation reference dataset for the purpose of calculating the new climatological standard normals for the period 1991-2020. The homogenization tool Climatol was applied to detect inhomogeneities in the Norwegian precipitation series for the period 1961-2018. -
