Cara Owsley is a national award-winning visual journalist/director of photography at the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Cara Owsley never aspired to win a Pulitzer Prize. She wasn’t a stand-out photojournalism student. She never won a bunch of awards, but she had passion and determination to improve her skills. Cara’s goal has always been to inform and inspire her community with the best photos and videos she could make. Cara will tell about her 20-plus year journey to becoming a multiple award-winning photojournalist, and now how she leads the photo staff at the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Rick Green is editor of the Courier Journal and Midwest Regional Editor. It’s hard to recall a time when journalists have come under such fire and intense public scorn for doing what America most needs us to do in this rancorous era of partisanship and political posturing: Defend the First Amendment. But how can something that was adopted in 1791 – the first of 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution that protected civil liberties under U.S. law – still be relevant today? Here’s your assignment: How will you protect the 45 words that changed the world?

Delaney Tarr is a recent graduate from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and was propelled into political and social activism after the Parkland shooting on Feb. 14. A former student entered the school armed with a semi-automatic AR-15. The mass shooting took the lives of 17 students and teachers and injured 14. Tarr has been active in the March for our Lives movement which promotes voter registration, education and voting. She will discuss the group’s voter registration movement, voter education and focus to get young people out to vote. She will discuss her journey from being a typical high school senior to a national voice for gun laws.
