Q&A How did you become involved in doing research? My research developed out of my final paper for English 598, Mapping London. We were given the freedom to work with any texts which we could use to facilitate an examination of British culture, and so I turned to an area of my own interest, fantasy literature and Tolkien. How is the research process different from what you expected? The research process spread my focus out from the primary texts with which I was working and quickly intermeshed my argument in the larger scholarly community. I was involved in the debate in a much more direct About Ryan Smith manner than I had expected I would be during undergraduate research. HOMETOWN What is your favorite part of doing research? Trabajo Fin de Grado Literary and Contextual Influences in JRR Tolkien’s Works Autor Diego Vera Repollés Directora Constanza del Río Álvaro Facultad de Filosofía y Letras 2014 1 TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION 2 1.- LITERARY INFLUENCES 3 2.- CONTEXTUAL INFLUENCES 9 CONCLUSION 18 APPENDIXES 20 WORKS CITED 21 2 INTRODUCTION Throughout the history of English Literature, there have been many renowned figures, from William Shakespeare to Charles Dickens, to others such as Wordsworth and Coleridge. All of these figures have eventually become part of one literary tendency, such as the Renaissance, Romanticism, or Victorian literature. There are other writers, though, who cannot be easily classified as belonging to a specific literary tendency or movement, but whose work fits a determined genre. Such is the case of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, worldwide known for his masterpiece, the thrilogy The Lord of the Rings, whose first part was published in 1954 and for some scholars, the most popular author of the 20th century (Chance, 2005). The Lord of the Rings is an epic fantasy narrating the facts occurred in the fantastic world known as Middle Earth, and is the culminant sequel to the previous events narrated in The Hobbit (1937). The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy composed of the volumes The Fellowship of the Ring (1954), The Two towers (1954) and The Return of the King (1955); each volume is subdivided in two books, giving a total of six books narrating the facts concerning the War of the Ring: the hobbit Frodo Baggins has to carry out the mission of throwing the ring into the fires of Mount Doom, in the dark country of Mordor, in order to destroy the menace of Evil upon the Middle Earth, epitomized in the figure of Sauron, the enemy of the Free Folks –and, to a lesser extent, in the wizard Saruman.

The Tale and the Unfolding Wisdom of Lawyers Abstract. This essay aims to explore the political and legal philosophical layers of J.R.R. Tolkien’s masterpiece. First, it demonstrates the ambivalent feature of power and authority appearing in The Lord of the Rings. The second part gives a reading of Tolkien’s philosophical anthropology. Next, it is shown how Tolkien’s concept of law can be placed in the framework of a Lockean political theory. Finally, the paper discusses the educational potential of this literary work in the process of moral and legal socialization of the “lawyers-to-be”. Keywords: law and literature, Lord of the Rings, legal education “I have forgotten much that I thought I knew, and learned again much that I had forgotten.”1 1. The Dark Side of the Power The primary concerns of The Lord of the Ring are the nature and the division of power. The plot revolves around the Ruling Ring what Sauron, the Dark Lord, made forged in the fire of Mount Doom in the previous age of the world. Other magic rings were also created and the kings of the Elves, those of the Dwarves, and those of the Men got them from Sauron. These rings acquired their power from the One Ring serving as means for Sauron to subdue the peoples of the Middle-Earth.

The Christianization of Middle Earth: Heroic Service in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings By Katherine Therriault A thesis submitted to Sonoma State University In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of MASTER OF ARTS In English Dr. Scott Miller Dr. Brantley Bryant 5/16/2019 i Copyright 2019 By Katherine Therriault ii Authorization for Reproduction of Master’s Thesis I grant permission for the print or digital reproduction of this thesis in its entirety, without further authorization from me, on the condition that the person or agency requesting reproduction absorb the cost and provide proper acknowledgment of authorship. May 16th, 2019 Katherine Therriault iii The Christianization of Middle Earth: Heroic Service in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings Katherine Therriault ABSTRACT This paper seeks to explore the spiritual and moral heroic dynamics in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings through the Christian virtue of humble service. Examining the emerging Christian values in an arguably pagan world creates a dichotomy of heroic values which compose a spiritual commentary for our modern world. Sam Gamgee, who I argue acts as the text’s moral crux, relies on the strengths of his Hobbit nature while keeping a reverence for “nobler” things. I will use Tolkien’s depiction of human character to explore the moral balance of inherent human qualities with conscious cultivation through righteous action. By highlighting this spiritual balance within Sam Gamgee, modern issues of class status begin to emerge through a focused Christian lens. Viewing heroic morality in this manner affords readers to celebrate the various strengths existent in all human beings and defends the concept of class difference as a natural aspect of the human condition.

  • Middle-Earth Music: the Sonic Inhabitation of a Fantasy World
. Volume 13, Issue 1 May 2016 Middle-earth music: The sonic inhabitation of a fantasy world Daniel White, University of Manchester, UK Summary: This article seeks to provide a deeper understanding of the cultural inhabitation of imaginary worlds by examining the role that music and its consumption play in these processes. Focussing largely on Howard Shore’s music for Peter Jackson’s two film trilogies set in Tolkien’s Middle-earth, the article relies on data found through web ethnography and a researcher-designed questionnaire targeted at fans of the franchise. Soundtrack consumption and listening practices are analysed to identify how and why this film music is listened to, as are the ways in which music enables a further sonic level of the inhabitation of Middle-earth. Placing Shore’s music alongside other contributions to Tolkien’s world poses questions of authority, authenticity and canon, finding that not every person’s Middle-earth sounds the same. Results show that, for many, the world built by music functions as an imagined or spiritual home to which they are transported and which provides numerous personal and practical benefits. Keywords: Film music, consumption, listening practices, worldbuilding, Lord of the Rings, Howard Shore. Introduction They transport me to this magnificent world I sometimes escape to, and they make me realize things about our actual world and stuff. I feel melancholy and courage and a bizarre sort of inner strength like I could achieve anything on my own. This music helps me in my life, and it inspires me for the things I love to do.
