Approved Conservation Advice for Rutidosis heterogama (Heath Wrinklewren) This Conservation Advice has been developed based on the best available information at the time this conservation advice was approved. Description Rutidosis heterogama, Family Asteraceae, also known as the Heath Wrinklewren or Heath Wrinklewort, is a perennial herb with decumbent (reclining to lying down) to erect stems, growing to 30 cm high (Harden, 1992; DECC, 2005a). The tiny yellow flowerheads are probably borne March to April (Leigh et al., 1984), chiefly in Autumn (Harden, 1992) or November to January. Seeds are dispersed by wind (Clarke et al., 1998) and the species appears to require soil disturbance for successful recruitment (Clarke et al., 1998). Conservation Status Heath Wrinklewren is listed as vulnerable. This species is eligible for listing as vulnerable under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cwlth) (EPBC Act) as, prior to the commencement of the EPBC Act, it was listed as vulnerable under Schedule 1 of the Endangered Species Protection Act 1992 (Cwlth). The species is also listed as vulnerable on the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 (NSW). Distribution and Habitat Heath Wrinklewren is confined to the North Coast and Northern Tablelands regions of NSW. It is known from the Hunter Valley to Maclean, Wooli to Evans Head, and Torrington (Harden, 1992). It occurs within the Border Rivers–Gwydir, Hunter–Central Rivers and Northern Rivers (NSW) Natural Resource Management Regions. -

It is done not only on NPWS managed lands, but right across New South Wales. This chapter is about conservation management in its N Graham/NPWS broadest sense and includes activities through which the NPWS is contributing to the achievement of NSW Biodiversity Strategy objectives. Working with Aboriginal communities The NPWS works with Aboriginal communities to achieve the protection of natural and cultural heritage through mechanisms that also deliver social and economic benefits. In the north of the state, the NPWS continued to consult with the Bundjalung and Githabul communities in order to improve NPWS management of areas and ensure its sensitivity to cultural issues. Steering groups have been formed for Mount Warning (Wollumbin) and Bundjalung national parks which will focus on developing NPWS Fire Management Officer Martin O’Connell and co-management agreements for these two parks. This process is important in Arakwal Community elders Auntie Linda Vidler and promoting the cultural significance of parks and reserves in the area. Most road ecology research seeks to assess the quantity and diversity of fatalities from collisions with vehicles, while studies documenting the impact of roads on the structure and sustainability of wildlife populations adjacent to roads have been lacking. Populations of wildlife existing within the confines of fragmented reserves are particularly susceptible to fatalities on roads, especially those situated within peri-urban and semi-rural matrices. We chose to examine the effects of disturbances, including fatalities on roads, using four case studies from Australia. These studies included a range of fauna, including the long-nosed bandicoot, the koala, and two studies of the swamp wallaby. To explore the impact of the various threats to wildlife living in peri-urban reserves, each case study utilized a population modeling approach. A combination of PVA modeling and sensitivity analysis was used to assess the impact of disturbances on the populations and identify appropriate management options to target disturbances. We discuss the utility of this approach in enabling conservation managers to assess the long-term viability of wildlife in these environments and in establishing management targets for improving viability in populations predicted to decline. -

February 2007 1 1. Background Amphibian species across the world have declined at an alarming rate in recent decades. According to the IUCN at least 122 species have gone extinct since 1980 and nearly one third of the world’s near 6,000 amphibian species are classified as threatened with extinction, placing the entire class at the core of the current biodiversity crisis (IUCN, 2006). Australasia too has experienced significant declines; several Australian species are considered extinct and nearly 25% of the remainder are threatened with extinction, while all four species native to New Zealand are threatened. Conventional causes of biodiversity loss, habitat destruction and invasive species, are playing a major role in these declines. However, emergent disease and climate change are strongly implicated in many declines and extinctions. These factors are now acting globally, rapidly and, most disturbingly, in protected and near pristine areas. Whilst habitat conservation and mitigation of threats in situ are essential, for many taxa the requirement for some sort of ex situ intervention is mounting. In response to this crisis there have been a series of meetings organised by the IUCN (World Conservation Union), WAZA (World Association of Zoos & Aquariums) and CBSG (Conservation Breeding Specialist Group, of the IUCN Species Survival Commission) around the world to discuss how the zoo community can and should respond. -

The genus Storenosoma Hogg, 1900 is revised and now contains thirteen species, S. hoggi (Roewer), S. altum Davies, S. supernum Davies, S. terraneum Davies, S. bifidum n.sp., S. bondi n.sp., S. forsteri n.sp., S. grayi n.sp., S. grossum n.sp., S. picadilly n.sp., S. smithae n.sp., S. tasmaniensis n.sp., and S. victoria n.sp. A new genus, Oztira, is described to contain Australian species previously ascribed to the New Zealand genus Otira Forster & Wilton. Oztira contains four species, Oz. affinis (Hickman) n.comb., Oz. aquilonaria (Davies) n.comb., Oz. summa (Davies) n.comb., and Oz. kroombit n.sp. Vegetation and flora of Booti Booti National Park and Yahoo Nature Reserve, lower North Coast of New South Wales. Cunninghamia 6(3): 645–715. The vegetation of Booti Booti National Park and Yahoo Nature Reserve on the lower North Coast of New South Wales has been classified and mapped from aerial photography at a scale of 1: 25 000. The plant communities so identified are described in terms of their composition and distribution within Booti Booti NP and Yahoo NR. The plant communities are also discussed in terms of their distribution elsewhere in south-eastern Australia, with particular emphasis given to the NSW North Coast where compatible vegetation mapping has been undertaken in many additional areas. Floristic relationships are also examined by numerical analysis of full-floristics and foliage cover data for 48 sites. A comprehensive list of vascular plant taxa is presented, and significant taxa are discussed. Management issues relating to the vegetation of the reserves are outlined.
