  • Policing the Sandbox in Grand Theft Auto Online
Policing the Sandbox in Grand Theft Auto Online Matthew Thomas Payne and Michael Fleisch I. Lines in the Sandbox Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto V (2013) broke a number of records following its September 17, 2013, release: it was the best-selling video game in a 24-hour period; its trailer was viewed more times than any other action- adventure game; and – perhaps most impressively – it eclipsed the $1 billion mark in three days, making it the fastest selling entertainment product ever.1 Yet a good deal of the excitement for this latest installment in Rockstar’s long-running and critically acclaimed parodic crime franchise was for an element that was absent during its initial launch. The debut of its greatly anticipated multiplayer mode, GTA Online (GTAO), on October 1st was marred by a series of glitches that required a few weeks and a few patches to remedy, a situation Rockstar tried to ameliorate by gifting all of its users $500k in virtual cash (aka GTA$). Once the mode was functional, it allowed users to play together in and around the vast, fictional city of Los Santos, San Andreas (think Los Angeles and southern California). Estimated at roughly Media Fields Journal no. 8 (2014) 2 Policing the Sandbox 100 square miles, GTA V is the largest sandbox-style world Rockstar has ever developed.2 In GTAO’s virtual playground, players compete in structured multiplayer contests and have the option to rob convenience stores, get in shootouts with cops, harass one another, or explore the urban and rural terrain, waterways, and skies.

  • Small Team, Big Licence SMALL TEAM
Interface Small team, big licence SMALL TEAM 44 / wfmag.cc Interface Small team, big licence SMALL TEAM BIG LICENCE Inside the tiny studios making games based on giant Hollywood properties WRITTEN BY AARON POTTER hile there’s definitely an upside to making a game based on a highly revered film, TV, or comic book, for the longest time, development teams working on licensed video games did so knowing that it came with a certain stigma attached. Known in industry circles for having much tighter production schedules and deadlines, games based on recognisable properties have long been synonymous with poor quality and a broad streak of cynicism. Of course, not all licensed games are bad. Rocksteady’s Arkham series gave players the thrill of being Batman; 2014’s Alien: Isolation recreated the aesthetic of Ridley Scott’s 1979 movie in painstaking (and chilling) detail, and the recently released Fallen Order has been praised in some quarters as the best Star Wars game from EA to date. But for every one of these home runs, there’s a dud like the assorted Iron Man tie-ins from 2008, or the widely derided Aliens: Colonial Marines, released in 2013. Whether they’re good, bad, or indifferent, triple-A licensed games will always exist in some capacity. But as we enter an era of gaming where more and more creatives are breaking away to form smaller studios, we’re now seeing what can happen when tiny teams get to work on some of the most famous IPs in the world. One such team is Illfonic, a Colorado-based developer currently working on the PlayStation exclusive Predator: Hunting Grounds, due out later this year.

Introduction This is a guide to the modern Japanese version of the traditional four-player Chinese tabletop game of mahjong, this variant also being known as Riichi Mahjong or Reach Mahjong. I've previously written several guides to specific mahjong video-games (these can all be accessed from my GameFAQs contributor page) but I decided to produce a new, general, resource which will be useful to people playing on any mahjong video-game or website, reading mahjong manga, watching mahjong anime or perhaps even playing the game with real tiles! Since I've already included lists of mahjong terms in some of my previous guides and I want to place an emphasis on explaining the terminology used in the game, I've decided to produce this in the form of a non-alphabetical glossary, with detailed definitions for each entry, terms given in Japanese text, categorised sections and hyperlinks between them.

Some of the controls will be different on the other versions (Pinball FX 2, Star Wars Pinball, etc...), but everything else in the Guide remains the same. INTRODUCTION This Table came about as a result of the partnership between Zen Studios and LucasArts; this license allowed Zen to produce Tables based on the Star Wars License. As of now Zen has been licensed to release 10 Star Wars Themed Tables but with more Tables possible in the future. The third batch of Tables was released in a 4 Pack which include the Tables; Han Solo, Droids, Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope & Masters of The Force. This Table is of course Han Solo; it pays homage to one of the most iconic Movie characters of all time.

  • Found in Translation: Evolving Approaches for the Localization of Japanese Video Games
arts Article Found in Translation: Evolving Approaches for the Localization of Japanese Video Games Carme Mangiron Department of Translation, Interpreting and East Asian Studies, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 08193 Bellaterra, Barcelona, Spain; [email protected] Abstract: Japanese video games have entertained players around the world and played an important role in the video game industry since its origins. In order to export Japanese games overseas, they need to be localized, i.e., they need to be technically, linguistically, and culturally adapted for the territories where they will be sold. This article hopes to shed light onto the current localization practices for Japanese games, their reception in North America, and how users’ feedback can con- tribute to fine-tuning localization strategies. After briefly defining what game localization entails, an overview of the localization practices followed by Japanese developers and publishers is provided. Next, the paper presents three brief case studies of the strategies applied to the localization into English of three renowned Japanese video game sagas set in Japan: Persona (1996–present), Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (2005–present), and Yakuza (2005–present). The objective of the paper is to analyze how localization practices for these series have evolved over time by looking at industry perspectives on localization, as well as the target market expectations, in order to examine how the dialogue between industry and consumers occurs. Special attention is given to how players’ feedback impacted on localization practices. A descriptive, participant-oriented, and documentary approach was used to collect information from specialized websites, blogs, and forums regarding localization strategies and the reception of the localized English versions.
