Fernández Recibido: 12 de mayo de 2019 Aceptado: 2 de agosto de 2019 ABSTRACT Crustacean microcoprolites are abundant constituents in the Upper Jurassic–Lower Cretaceous of the Neuquén Basin (Argentina). A new record of these particles is described from the lowermost Olcostephanus (O.) atherstoni ammonite Zone (lower Valanginian) in the Mulichinco Formation at Puerta Curacó section, north of the Neuquén province. Coprolites come from shallow-water oyster-dominated biostromes and belong to a new ichnospecies, Palaxius chosmalalensis n. isp., which was previously described as P. decemlunulatus (Paréjas) from the Upper Cretaceous of Egypt. As a consequence of the description of the new ichnospecies, we propose to incor- porate quantitative criteria regarding the angle with which the canals are oriented, as well as its position with respect to the center of symmetry of the coprolite. Because of their excess density, the flows plunge near the river mouth and continue to travel basinward as a quasi-steady and fully turbulent underflow. The related deposits are hyperpycnites, and constitute a particular type of turbidite with poorly known facies and facies tracts. Although hyperpycnal flows seem to be quite common in present times, their occurrence in fossil strata is poorly documented. This paper addresses the characteristics and depositional processes of shallow lacustrine sandy hyperpycnites, on the basis of the field analysis of well-exposed Lower Cretaceous strata (Rayoso Formation) in the Neuque´n Basin of west-central Argentina. The Rayoso Formation is composed of clastic (and minor evaporitic) red beds up to 1200 m thick, deposited in a shallow perennial lake of variable salinity affected by long-lived hyperpycnal flows. Main clastic facies are composed of fine-grained sandstones with climbing ripples and plane beds. -
Valanginian Knowles Limestone, East Texas: Biostratigraphy and Potential Hydrocarbon Reservoir 81

Ridge Rd., Cleveland, Oklahoma 74020–5037, U.S.A. ABSTRACT The Lower Cretaceous Knowles Limestone is the uppermost unit of the Cotton Valley Group in the northeastern Texas Gulf Coast. It is the oldest Cretaceous carbonate shelf deposit that is a prospective reservoir. This shallow shelf-to-ramp shoal- ing-up complex is an arcuate lenticular lithosome that trends from East Texas across northwestern Louisiana. It is up to 330 m (1080 ft) thick and thins both landward and basinward. Landward lagoonal inner ramp facies are mollusk wackestone and peloidal packstone. The thickest buildup facies are coral-chlorophyte-calcimicrobial boundstone and bioclast grainstone, and the basinward facies is pelagic oncolite wackestone. The base of the Knowles is apparently conformable with the Bossier/Hico dark gray shale. The top contact in East Texas is disconformable with the overlying Travis Peak/Hosston formations. Porosity resulted from successive diagenetic stages including early marine fringing cements, dissolution of aragonitic bioclasts, micrite encrustation, later mosaic cement, and local fine crystalline dolomitization. The age of the Knowles Limestone is early Valanginian based on a calpionellid-calcareous dinoflagellate-calcareous nan- nofossil assemblage in the lower part and a coral-stromatoporoid assemblage in its upper part. The intra-Valanginian hiatus represented by the Knowles/Travis Peak unconformity correlates with the Valanginian “Weissert” oceanic anoxic event. Possi- bly organic-rich source rocks were deposited downdip during that oceanic low-oxygen event. -

[email protected]; [email protected] Abstract. The genus Steinmanella Crickmay is recorded in several Lower Cretaceous marine units of the Neuquén Basin. It is particularly abundant at the transition between the Vaca Muerta and Mulichinco formations. This paper presents a taxonomic revision of this fauna, discusses the stratigraphic range of each species, and describes and interprets the associated lithofacies based on detailed field sections, newly collected specimens and revision of previous fossil collections. Four sections were measured in northern Neuquén comprising the upper beds of the Vaca Muerta Formation and the lower ones of the Mulichinco Formation. The Steinmanella fauna was dated accurately on the basis of a precise ammonoid zonation. The species were found in the Neocomites wichmanni and Lissonia riveroi zones of early Valanginian age. Specimens were collected in situ from dark grey shales, alternating siltstones, wackestones and mudstones, and rudstones. Three species were identified: Steinmanella curacoensis (Weaver), S. quintucoensis (Weaver), and S. subquadrata sp. nov. Steinmanella curacoensis has an oval outline, poor demarcation of carinae, flank and corselet ribs partially intercalated at the median part of the valve, and oval escutcheon. -

They are also recorded in Europe, with Demandasaurus, having been described in Salas de los Infantes, Spain (Torcida Fernández‐Baldor et al., 2011). The rebbachisaurids have played a particularly significant role in the recognition of the events of dispersal and vicariance that took place within Gondwana and between Gondwana and Laurasia in the Early Cretaceous, the time of the rupture and definitive separation of Africa and South America. -

Asterozoans are free living, star-shaped echinoderms which are important components of benthic marine faunas worldwide. Their fossil record is, however, poor and fragmentary, probably due to dissarticulation of ossicles. In particular, fossil asteroids are infrequent in South America. A new species of starfish is reported from the early Valanginian of the Mulichinco Formation, Neuquén Basin, in the context of a shallow-water, storm-dominated shoreface environment. The specimen belongs to the Astropectinidae, and was assigned to a new species within the genus Tethyaster Sladen, T. antares sp. nov., characterized by a R:r ratio of 2.43:1, rectangular marginals wider in the interbrachial angles, infero- marginals (28 pairs along a median arc) with slightly convex profile and flat spines (one per ossicle in the interbrachials and two per ossicle in the arms). -

Fernández Recibido: 7 de julio de 2020 Aceptado: 14 de septiembre de 2020 ABSTRACT A total of 22 concretions containing 37 decapod crustacean specimens belonging to the family Axiidae, from the Hauterivian (Lower Cretaceous) of the Agrio Formation in the Neuquén Basin, were studied. The decapods were assigned to Protaxius sp., which likely had a fossorial life habit. In this work we attempt to determine, through taphonomic analysis, if the specimens fossilized within their burrows or outside them in order to interpret paleobiological aspects of the studied taxon. Several taphonomic criteria of the specimens and concretions, known from the literature, were applied and their utility discussed, including anatomical disposition, completeness of specimens, orientation and alignment, dispersion of exoskeletal elements in the concretion, preservation of both chelae, sedimentary fabric of the concretion, position within the concretion, and shape of the concretions. The relative importance of these criteria was discussed especially in those concretions with conflicting evidence pointing to either fossilization within or outside burrow systems. -

Ornithosuchids are a group of pseudosuchian archosaurs known from the Late Triassic of Argentina and Scotland, repre- sented by three species: Riojasuchus tenuisceps, Venaticosuchus rusconii, and Ornithosuchus woodwardi. Previous authors pro- posed carnivorous or scavenger habits for ornithosuchids based on their general morphology, but only recently the me- chanical capabilities of Riojasuchus have been tested by the author with a finite elements analysis. New cranial remains of Venaticosuchus found at the Instituto Lillo in 2015 allowed this reconstruction of its adductor musculature and the subse- quent comparative study of the jaw biomechanics of ornithosuchids. A traditional biomechanical approach was here used to study their feeding habits considering the jaw as a lever system and the reconstructed muscles as input forces. The prevailing element of the adductor musculature differed among ornithosuchids, dominating the intramandibular muscle in Venatico- suchus, as seen in aetosaurs, and the pseudotemporal muscle in Riojasuchus and Ornithosuchus resembling Alligator. The total adductor moment arm resulted higher in ornithosuchids than in aetosaurs and crocodiles, with bite ratios 30–75% higher than Alligator. The bite of ornithosuchids was somewhat slower than Alligator because the input forces are more distant from the craniomandibular articulation. Active predatory habits of ornithosuchids could be consistent with the strong, fast bite inferred but the structural weakness of their laterally compressed snout defies that hypothesis. -
