Eastern Approaches - Fitzroy Maclean - Google книги Eastern Approaches is a memoir of the early career of Fitzroy Maclean. Maclean was considered to be one of the inspirations for James Bond[1] and this book contains many of the elements: remote travel, the sybaritic delights of diplomatic life, violence and adventure. The American edition was titled Escape To Adventureand was published a year later. All place names in this article use the spelling in the book. Fresh out of CambridgeMaclean joined the Foreign Office and spent a couple of years at the Paris embassy. He loved the pleasures of life in the French capital, but Eastern Approaches longed for adventure. Against the advice of his friends and to the Eastern Approaches of his London bosseshe requested a posting to Moscowwhich he received right away; once there, he began to learn Russian. Travelling within the Soviet Union was frowned upon by the authorities, but Maclean managed to take several trips anyway. In the spring ofhe took a trial trip, heading south from Moscow to Baku on the Caspian Sea. The Intourist official tried to dissuade him, but he found a ship to take him to Lenkoran LankaranAzerbaijanwhere he witnessed the deportation of several hundred Turko-Tartar peasants to Central Asia. Stuck there for a few days, he bargained for horses with which to explore the countryside, and was arrested by the NKVD cavalry near to Eastern Approaches Persian border. He explained that he held diplomatic immunitybut his captors could not read his Soviet diplomatic pass. Eventually, as the only person Eastern Approaches in Russian, Maclean "read out, with considerable expression, and such improvements as occurred to Eastern Approaches the contents of his pass, and was set free. He took an paddle steamer back to Baku, and then a train on to Tiflis TbilisiGeorgia. British troops had supported the Democratic Republic after World War I Eastern Approaches, and Maclean sought out the British war cemeteryin the process discovering an English governess who had lived in the town since He caught a truck through the Caucasus mountainsvia Mtzkhet Mtskhetathe former capital of Georgia but by then merely a village, to Vladikavkaz capital of North Ossetiaand then a train to Moscow. His second trip, in the autumn of the same year, took him east along the Trans-Siberian Railway. On the trains Eastern Approaches heard the complaints Eastern Approaches the Siberian kolkhozniks workers on collective farms and witnessed another mass movement, this time of Eastern Approaches to Central Asia. He characterised it as "one of the Eastern Approaches provincial towns in the Soviet Union" and particularly appreciated the apples for which it is famous. Eastern Approaches there he took a truck to a hill village called Talgar and went walking with one of his NKVD escorts; Maclean availed himself of peasant hospitality and commented on Eastern Approaches general prosperity. He managed to hire a car and made it to Issyk-kulthe lake that never freezes, but had to turn back because of the season.

The Allied Presence on Vis 1943-45 15 Jul 43 A C-47A (ser. # 42-23515; Mission 9377) went MIA at Vis Island (apparently all crewmen were accounted for).1 Mid Aug 43 Some 3 weeks before Italy capitulated, the Partisans captured the entire Italian military garrison, of approx. 50 troops, on Vis without a fight, nor any casualties (variously described as an old fort and a lookout post atop Mt Hum). The Italians were disarmed and then freed, whereupon 10 hostages were taken from both Komiža and Vis, with the Italian demand that their weapons be returned within three days.2 31 Aug 43 With no weapons having been returned, the 20 hostages from Komiža and Vis were publicly executed by Italian firing squad.3 8 Sep 43 Italy capitulated. 24 Sep 43 Split evacuated by Partisans under Gen Koca Popović, to advancing Germans, having only controlled the city for eleven days.4 12 Oct 43 OSS began a 3-month mission, under Major Louis Huot, USA, to provide 6,000 tons of supplies to the Partisan garrison on Vis, via Bari, aboard the HMS Gull (Sub-Lt Taylor, RNR) and the little coal steamer SS Bakar. Huot wrote of his main interlocutors being the garrison commander, Commander Sergije Makiedo (actually the Commissar, Lt Col [later Admiral] Josip Černi/Černy was the Cdr), and Jože Poduje. They would moor in the "Baie des Anglais," a little basin on the eastern side of Vis harbor. A derelict convent on the waterfront then served as the Partisan hospital, with 3 young indefatigable doctors, “Bobin,” who spoke shaky French, “Zucalo” who spoke appalling English, & “Biacic” who spoke basic German [note how Strutton cites only 2 Partisan doctors on Vis, the charlatan, “Dr.

  • About Some Local Sources of the Recent War in Bosnia-Herzegovina*
Nar. umjet. 37/1, 2000, pp. 115-132, M. Bax, The Celebration of a Violent Past: About... Preliminary communication Received: 2nd Aug. 1999 Accepted: 3rd Feb. 2000 UDK 355.01:355.293(497.6) MART BAX Norremeerstraat 19, 2361 KN Warmond THE CELEBRATION OF A VIOLENT PAST: ABOUT SOME LOCAL SOURCES OF THE RECENT WAR IN BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA* Bosnia-Herzegovina is the site of a striking number of World War II monuments erected on or in the immediate vicinity of mass graves. These memorials are bones of contention and generate violent inter- -ethnic animosity. This article gives an extensive description of the trials and tribulations of one of these war monuments and the Serb and Croat communities involved. It addresses an aspect of ethnic cleansing that has hitherto been the focus of very little research, i.e. the destruction of mass graves. It is hypothesized that mass graves and the related commemorative ceremonies constitute a key to understanding the stagnating ethnic identification and the recent revival of war violence in rural Bosnia-Herzegovina. The article advocates a more systematic inquiry into the local sources of the war in this part of the former Yugoslavia. Keywords: political anthropology, war, Bosnia-Herzegovina Far from simply serving to divert hostile impulses in a harmless direction, human ritual is employed to exhort people to war and violence (...) as long as intergroup hostilities have existed, rituals have been used to express them (David Kertzer 1988). * This article is based upon documents and field work I conducted intermittently between 1983 and 1995. The names of almost all the people and some of the places have been changed.

  • Silk Road As Metaphor, Seattle, the Silk Road, and the Pacific Rim
Conclusion The Next Step: Silk Road as Metaphor, Seattle, the Silk Road, and the Pacific Rim 1 The Foodways of Central Asia and Its Sprawling Extensions Have Been Shaped by Several Forces First, geography and ecology: the vast steppes and deserts, the sky-piercing mountains with pastures and forests, the long narrow riverine oases, the enor- mous wealth of wild plants and—formerly—wild game and fish, the savage climate. The eastern approaches are strictly summer-rainfall lands, under the monsoon; the western, from the Pamirs and western Altai, have more winter rain. Cool periods force the rainstorms south, which hurts the east—rain is held back in north China—but helps the west, because the Atlantic storm tracks are forced south from northern Europe and Russia to the Mediterranean and Central Asia. Seasonal availability of pasture led to annual movements of nomads that could cover hundreds of miles. Knowledge of resources and routes was thus critical, and necessarily encyclopedic, as anyone knows who has spent time with Central Asian herder. A veteran herder knows when each important forage or veterinary plant is available over an area that can reach thousands of square miles. Second, the prehistory of settlement: hunter-gatherers, evidently at very low density, rapidly filled in the environment, but population was tiny until agri- culture and stockraising expanded after 7000 BCE. It reached all parts of the region in the 2nd millennium BCE. At about that same time, toward the start of the Bronze Age, full-scale nomadism with mixed stock and portable housing emerged, spreading over the region and making much better use of vast tracts of desert and steppe.

Maclean harbored a secret ambition: “I was going, if it was humanly possible, to the Caucasus and Central Asia, to Tashkent, Bokhara and Samarkand.” 1 However, foreigners were then forbidden access to central Asia. So Maclean instead boarded a train for Baku, hoping that from there he could cross the Caspian Sea and reach central Asia. In Baku, he illegally boarded a steamer to Lenkoran, a Caspian port near the border of Azerbaijan and Persia. There he found a hotel room. The next morning he was awakened early by a proces- sion of trucks, which continued the entire day, “driving headlong through the town on the way to the port, each filled with depressed-looking Turko-Tartar peasants under the escort of NKVD frontier troops with fixed bayonets.” 2 At the port, the peasants were being loaded onto ships for deportation to central Asia.
