June 23, SITUATION REPORT 2010 Name of Disaster: Flood Locations : Netrokona, Sylhet, Kurigram, Sunamgonj, Moulovibazar, District of Bangladesh Date of Disaster: June 22, 2010 Situation Report No.181 Netrokona District Flood situation further deteriorated in Netrokona district yesterday, June 22, 2010. Water levels of the rivers Someshwary, Dhanu and Ubdakhali marked further rise. Torrential downpour during the last few days and hill waters from the upstream worsened the flood at the Durgapur, Kalmakanda and Khaliajuri upazilas of Netrokona district as 60 more villages were flooded rendering about 75 thousand people marooned. Sylhet District Despite less rain some new areas in Balaganj and in Dakshin Surma upazila of Sylhet district were inundated during the last 24 hours. More over, all the rivers in the Sylhet region were still flowing above danger mark at almost all points. Most of the villages in Zakiganj, Beanibazar, Golapganj, Fenchuganj and Jaintapur upazilas of Sylhet flooded two weeks ago are still under water. Road links of Sylhet district headquarters with Beanibazar, Zakiganj and Balaganj upazilas remained suspended as water still inundates several points of the roads. Kurigram District People of low-lying areas in Kurigram district fallen in boundless sufferings due to flood. Heavy rainfall and hill water from upstream caused flood that inundated Nageshwari Bhurungamari , Rowmari, Rajibpur, Chilmari and Ulippur upazila in Kurigram district rendering more than 35,000 people of 9 thousand families into waterlogged. Most of the people in the affected area can not move away with out boat. Sunamgonj District Flood situation remained unchanged at Jagannathpur upazila in Sunamgonj district due to heavy rain and hill water from upstream. Significant number of families has been suffering from acute food crisis as almost all the low lying areas of Jagannathpur upazila remaining under water for the last one month. Moulovibazar District: Long term water logging problem formed there in 24 unions of Kulaura, Borolekha and Juri upazila in Moulovibazar district. As a result, serious food crisis made the farmers to sell their domestic animal with low price rendering the poor people to long term poverty. Although relief have been distributed but insufficient to the flood affected people. Kalmakanda upazila • At least 30 villages of Borkapon, Rongchati, of Netrokona district Karnai and Koilati unions in Kalmakanda upazila have been flooded. • Floodwater damaged most seedbeds of Aman - crops in the affected areas. • The five- kilometer long link road Kalmakanda to Boroiganj bazar has been fully inundated. Khaliajuri upazilas • 10 new villages were flooded in Khaliajuri upazila of Netrokona district Monday, June 21, 2010. Flood also water damaged Sunamgonj district 5 bridges in Jagannathpur upazila. • Jagannathpur municipality, Asharkandi, Sayedpur Shaharpara, Pilegao, Ranigonj and Chilaura Holdipur union has been remaining under flood - water for the last 1 month. • In Chilaura Holdipur union of Jagannathpur upazila, people have been suffering from serious food crisis as they can not collect their yearly crops due to recent flood. Moulovibazar • 24 unions of Kulaura, Borolekha and Juri upazila district in Moulovibazar district has been remaining under _ flood water for the last 1 month. Source: Daily Newspaper.
