FROM THE DIRECTOR OF SPORT

Dear Parents,

Sport at Kingston Grammar School plays an integral role in our students’ education. We aim to provide a sporting programme that has a positive influence on all our students regardless of age, gender and ability. We develop every student’s interest in sport and physical activity, from aspiring internationals to those for whom exercise is just part of a healthy lifestyle.

Our long and established tradition of sporting excellence enables us to maximise every student’s potential: we have an array of top facilities at our disposal and an exceptional team of full-time staff and professional coaches. This team comprises former international sportsmen and women, committed academic staff as well as staff solely dedicated to the running of our competitive sports programme. This level of expertise guarantees the best possible environment for every student to maximise their skills, including those at the performance end. Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions not answered by this guide.

Mrs N Maclean Director of Sport

THE KGS SPORTING ETHOS

Sport at Kingston Grammar School plays an instrumental role in our students’ lives. We actively encourage all students to engage in both competitive and non-competitive activities, week in, week out.

KGS offers a range of competitive sports with an ever-increasing number of teams and crews representing the School. Students are expected to engage and participate in the main team sports during their junior years, before being exposed to a wider range of more recreational options in later years. As well as organising prestigious fixtures against other schools and clubs, we have a programme of inter-house sport, enabling all students to experience regular competition. We are proud of our participation rates. Last year, we played more than 1000 sporting fixtures, involving more than 75% of students across our competitive sports.

Our success is based upon a variety of factors and whilst winning titles is important, it is not at the expense of the foundation stones of our sporting ethos – engagement, excellence and endeavour.

THE DEPARTMENT’S MISSION

To be one of the best co-educational day schools in for sport. We aim to offer a breadth of sporting opportunity in the early years with multi-sport participation encouraged. Thereafter, a student-centred approach is adopted, aiming at lifelong engagement, participation and success.

‘PREPARE WELL, PERFORM HAPPY’

THE SPORTING KINGSTONIAN

At Kingston Grammar School it is clear to see the role sport plays in the development of a student’s life. Our Games Programme embodies many qualities in which the School believes; being gracious in victory and generous in defeat, working as part of a team, learning to lead and be led, installing a strong work ethic and commitment as well as building self-belief and confidence. Through this process, we hope every student will endeavour to become a great ‘Sporting Kingstonian’ in their time here.

We expect our students to:

• Participate with fair play and sportsmanship • Endeavour to succeed and persevere • Have pride in representing the School • Support and encourage their peers

GAMES PROGRAMME

At KGS we run a fantastic Games Programme, designed to provide every student with an opportunity to engage, enjoy themselves and excel in one or more sporting activities.

Cricket, hockey and rowing fully embrace our co-educational nature and are regarded as our focus or performance sports where we compete at local, county, regional and national level. These are also the sports from which most of our international sportsmen and women emerge and where we have the highest numbers participating at any one time. For example, in the last five years, over 20 students have achieved international honours and we have reached a national final in the above sports on 20 separate occasions. These are also the sports in which the majority of our students will participate in curriculum games lessons, supplemented by trainings, practices and fixtures.

Football, futsal, netball, tennis, athletics and golf are regarded as our aspirational sports. These are co- educational and available in games lessons for some students, and they have a full co-curricular and fixtures calendar, outstanding coaches/teachers and a dedicated Head of Sport. The classification of ‘aspirational’ refers to the level and category of competition as well as the numbers of coaches, teachers and participants involved. For many of these activities, a commitment to co-curricular sport is expected and students will supplement their ‘major’ sport/s with one or more of these.

Team sports and lifelong physical activity are the two pillars of this programme. From the list of activities offered, you will see the breadth available for every student to flourish, enjoy and engage in lasting physical activity (this fulfils our participation aim).

CHANGE OF GAMES PROCEDURE

We are keen that students have the opportunity to excel in our performance or focus sports, but we recognise that they may wish to commit fully to other activities on offer in Games lessons on a Wednesday. We anticipate the major sport of the term will take the majority of students up to and including the Fourth Year (with regular training and fixtures).

In the Summer term of the Third Year, students are able to sign up to rowing as a full competitive option and this process is conducted via Firefly during the Spring term. Students entering the Fourth Year are able to make a guided choice regarding their Games option in conjunction with the relevant Head of Sport and Director of Sport.

As a consequence, students wishing to change their Games option should follow this process:

As a student you need to: 1. Speak directly to your current coach, as to the reason(s) you may wish to leave that Games option. 2. Speak directly to your Head of Sport explaining your reasons as discussed with the coach. The coach and Head of Sport will then discuss the practical implications of your request e.g. possible restrictions on numbers accommodated. 3. Collect a yellow form from the Sports Administrative Assistant, Mrs Vilasoa, and pass on to your exsisting Head of Sport to sign. 4. Speak directly to your new Head of Sport (or Director of Sport for recreational options) and ask for their signature on the yellow form. This is needed as there may be practical issues or restrictions surrounding numbers of participants in any given sport. 5. Meet with the Director of Sport and discuss the above process. After which he/she will sign a yellow ‘change of games option form’ if in agreement with the decision of both Heads of Sport.

Points of interest in this process: • No student can change their Games options mid-term. Any change of Games process can only take place for the beginning of a new term. • The Director of Sport reserves the right not to grant a change of Games option to any student whom she feels is doing so under negative reasoning which may undermine the ethos of sport at KGS.

OFF-GAMES PROCEDURE

First to Fifth Year If any student is off Games, but still in school, having consulted with their Head of Year at break with their off- Games note they should:

• Register in the library at 2pm and remain there for the duration of Games.

All students in First to Fifth Year must remain on the school site until 3.50pm.

Lower Sixth & Upper Sixth Any Sixth Form student who is off Games must report to Mrs Davies, the Sixth Form Secretary, before 1.30pm each Wednesday and stay at school. Failure to do so will result in an after-school detention.

11

SENIOR GAMES REGISTRATION

Fifth Year & Sixth Form

It is the responsibility of each student to ensure they have been registered for Senior Games each Wednesday as staff will not be expected to chase students during the afternoon.

Ditton Field (to include the Boat House & Fitness Suite)

Registration for activities closes at 2.30pm. All students must make it their priority to register with the allocated staff member before 2.30pm.

Away fixtures

For away fixtures on Wednesday afternoons, all staff will register their team and provide details to the School office.

Off-site facilities

For all off-site facilities used by KGS for Senior Games, students are expected to be at their venue for registration at least 10 minutes before the start time, to allow staff to register and set up accordingly.

Points of interest

Students are expected to wear branded KGS sport kit to all activities. If any student fails to abide by the clear registration procedures or fails to attend their chosen option without a legitimate and communicated reason, they will be issued with an after-school detention.

If an item is lost, it should be reported to the student’s Form Tutor. If valuable items are left by students at Ditton Field, they are brought back immediately to the school site and given to Mrs Harrison in the main office for student collection.

17

COMPETITIVE SPORT (FIXTURES) What sports do we compete in?

Kingston Grammar School fields competitive teams regularly in: • Hockey • Football • Futsal • Netball • Tennis • Cricket • Athletics • Golf • Rowing crews (Third Year upwards)

Where do we play them?

Our main home fixtures are played at our sports ground, Ditton Field, Summer Road, Thames Ditton, , KT7 0RD

Who do we play?

We play many of the top schools in Surrey, London and the South of England during our Saturday and mid- week matches. We also enter a number of national competitions which may result in us travelling further afield.

Can my son or daughter compete in a number of sports?

In the lower years, students are greatly encouraged to represent the School in a multitude of sports (Saturday fixtures are usually reserved for our focus or ‘performance’ sport for that term/s, which also has Games lesson priority).

With the combination of Games lessons and co-curricular clubs, it is certainly possible to combine a number of sports. Training and fixture clashes are usually kept to a minimum. We also run sports for full seasons as opposed to changing from term to term. This enables students to fully develop their skills and to participate over a greater time period.

What is the cancellation process for fixtures?

Students are informed of cancellations in school by staff, through the KGS sport website and/or by messages on the electronic board in the Junior Quad and outside the gym. If weekend fixtures are cancelled at short notice, the member of staff in charge of the team will update the sport website (sport.kgs.org.uk) and the KGS Sport Twitter feed (www.twitter.com/kgs_sport). Parents are encouraged to check both regularly.

Team sheets

All team sheets are posted on the dedicated sports website - sport.kgs.org.uk a minimum of 48 hours beforehand. Staff will try and ensure that as much logistical information is included on the team sheets but finish and return times may differ as they are estimates.

Post-match sports teas

Following all home (and most away) fixtures, students will be required to attend sports teas. At Ditton Field, sports teas will be provided in the pavilion. All students are expected to attend post-match sports teas in full KGS tracksuits during the Autumn/Spring terms.

18

COMPETITIVE SPORT SELECTION PROCEDURE

KGS Sport has an inclusive ethos which aims to enable as many students as possible to represent the School. We have a proud tradition of both midweek and Saturday fixtures.

We positively encourage all students to represent the School in some capacity and try to ensure opportunities for all those who regularly attend squad training. We encourage, support and strive for success at all levels of participation and competition. No squad/crew is fixed and, through experience, we know that students develop at different rates. Our approach is always to select the appropriate squad/crew for each fixture and/or to tailor squad/crew selection to the opposition. On occasion, students may be selected for older age groups if deemed appropriate.

Captain/Vice-Captain selection usually takes place at the beginning of the season and will be communicated directly to students by the coach. As the season progresses, roles may become fluid and this is always at the coach’s discretion. Additionally, we aim to reward good leadership, organisation and communication skills, as well as those students who act as model ‘Sporting Kingstonians’ both on and off the sports field.

Selection for tennis as a games option and/or squad training sessions mid-week is based upon a student’s performance at pre-season trials. This is due to restricted court space. Open tennis practice is run throughout the summer term on Saturday morning and is non-selective.

Weekly squad selection

At the senior end of the School, every attempt will be made to communicate non-selection in person prior to the squad sheet being published. At the junior end, as there is greater movement between squads/crews, it is sometimes necessary to rotate players in order to ensure that all students get the opportunity to represent the School. In this case, wherever possible, coaches will do their utmost to talk to the student(s) before the squad sheets are released, but this may not always be possible.

When selecting teams/crews, the following guidelines will be applied by staff:

• Commitment to after-school training is a pre-requisite for selection. Selection will prioritise all students who regularly attend after-school or Saturday morning training. • Teachers and coaches will use their professional judgement and experience to pick all teams to represent KGS at all age levels. • Coaches will keep a record of student attendance at both training and competitive sport. • ‘A’ team selection will prioritise the best performers and aim to be the strongest side for any given fixture. Where there are subsequent team fixtures within a particular age group, coaches will ensure that opportunities exist for all students and there is fluidity of selection.

If there are any concerns raised regarding team or crew selections, these should be addressed to the team manager or coach, the relevant Head of Sport and, if needed, the Director of Sport.

19

SCHOOL REPRESENTATION & SATURDAY SPORT Representing the School is a huge part of our sporting ethos. Many aspirational sports are played mid- week to avoid clashes and to give students the opportunity to play more than one sport per term.

When any student is selected to play for the School (midweek or Saturday), that fixture must be their major priority.

Only the following three reasons excuse students from honouring fixture selection:

1. Playing county, regional or national sport 2. Illness 3. Serious family matter (to include wedding, funeral or a relative’s illness)

Two weeks’ notice by students and parents is required if the student is unavailable to play a School fixture, particularly on a Saturday. If students fall ill on the Saturday morning, every effort must be made to contact the coach in charge of that fixture. Contact details for sports staff can be found on the sports website.

If a student does not attend a fixture they are selected for and fails to give the sufficient notice, they may be subject to the School’s sanction policy and de-selection from squads/teams may occur.

AFTER-SCHOOL PRACTICES

All teams/squads will have at least one after-school practice a week. These sessions are open to all students but it is expected that all team players will attend. Attendance at training is a prerequisite for selection for inter-school fixtures.

After-school practices take place at a variety of venues depending upon the time of year and the sport. The full after-school practice timetable for each term will be available on the School’s sport website at the end of the term preceding the new timetable and usually included in the Director of Sport’s end of term newsletter and on sport.kgs.org.uk (under the Resources tab).

20

SPORT SCHOLARS’ PROGRAMME & AWARDS The School offers a comprehensive programme for those awarded Sport Scholarships. Its main principle is to support and guide our student athletes the best way we can. This support includes a half termly meeting with a dedicated mentor, termly assistance with study skills, nutritional advice and workshops, sports psychology access as well as strength and conditioning sessions.

We expect the following from our Sport Scholars:

• To be an excellent role model and ambassador for KGS Sport • A willingness to respond to the sporting demands placed upon them • A commitment to demonstrating initiative and to taking responsibility for their sporting development both within and beyond the curriculum • To participate in the many and varied sport-related opportunities offered by the School • Achieve consistently good or better grades in both effort and achievement for PE and Games • Demonstrate a commitment to the development and success of the sports programme • Attend all lectures, workshops and seminars in the scholarship programme where appropriate • Consistent and effective communication with staff.

21

INTER-HOUSE SPORTS COMPETITIONS

In addition to co-curricular sporting fixtures, KGS is proud to run an extensive inter-house sport programme across a wide spectrum of sports. This is a vital part of the fabric of the School and it allows participation in high numbers, across the sports listed below:

MEDICAL PROVISION & INJURY PROCEDURES

Medical Provision & Injury Procedures All Physical Education and Games staff have undergone first aid training. Ditton Field has a designated first aid treatment room that is fully equipped. All sports staff will have access to a first aid kit at away fixtures. For block Saturday fixtures we also have private emergency first aid cover through First Aid Cover Limited.

Head Injury Procedure Children and adolescents have a greater risk of problems associated with a concussion resulting from head injury. Studies provide evidence that children:

• Take longer to recover • Have more significant memory and mental processing issues • Are more susceptible to rare and dangerous neurological complications including death caused by second impact syndrome (Rossiter, 2014)

This procedure therefore aims to: • Help early recognition of a concussion or significant head injury • Ensure appropriate treatment • Protect young people from potential long-term complications of untreated head injuries and concussion

A head injury is defined by NICE as any trauma to the head other than superficial injuries to the surface of the face (NICE clinical guideline 176). The majority of head injuries are minor and can be treated by a qualified First Aider.

A head injury is considered to be significant if: • It involves a fall of three metres or more • It involves injury from a projectile or other object • Any vomiting since the head injury • There is altered consciousness (i.e. not alert).

Anyone presenting with one or more of the above must seek medical advice from their GP and/or attend A&E services. An ambulance will be called immediately if there are any of the following symptoms: • Loss of consciousness for more than one minute, or reduced consciousness • Any neurological alteration (cognitive processing – difficulty in speaking, understanding, reading, writing, any loss of feeling, difficulty with balance, general weakness, altered vision, unsteady gait) • Any suspicion of a skull fracture (bleeding/clear fluid from nose, ear, black eye with no injury close by, bruising behind one or both ears, visible trauma to scalp or skull) • Any seizure • Amnesia • Taking anticoagulant medication/history of clotting disorder

All head injuries are recorded on the Schools Accident Report Form. Parents will be informed of all significant head injuries and given a Head Injury Advice Sheet to take home in order to monitor symptons. All Games staff have received training in this procedure, including how to recognise a significant head injury and how to initiate follow-on care.

Students who go on to have a medically confirmed concussion must not return to training or matches unless they have completed a graduated return to play (GRTP) programme according to their age. Minimum return to play for 15 years and under is 23 days and for 16-18 years is 21 days (England Hockey recommendations, 2018). Students must be cleared by a trained medical professional in writing before they can return to sport. This is monitored by the Assistant Director of Sport through the Return to Play concussion management system

23

TRANSPORT

All students are transported to Ditton Field for Games lessons.

Below is a simple outline of the procedure: • The year group whose Games afternoon it is will be first in to lunch • Games bell rings at 1.30pm • All students must be in the QEII quad ready for registration • Registration takes place in tutor group order at 1.35pm • Buses leave for the fields at between 1.40pm and 1.45pm from Birkenhead Avenue • Students arrive at Ditton Field, change and start Games at 2.00pm • Games lessons finish at 3.50pm

Following a Games Afternoon

Students can make their own way home at 3.50pm via public transport or arrange to be collected from Ditton Field. Alternatively, students can catch the return bus to the school site at 4.00pm.

Arrangements for after-school practices and fixtures (at Ditton Field and off-site facilities)

Following the end of the school day at 3.50pm, students meet in the Junior Quad as soon as they have collected their bags and belongings. They are then walked to Birkenhead Avenue to catch the after-school bus to Ditton Field/the off-site facility.

Arrangements for after-school practices (at school site or at local venue)

Following the end of the school day at 3.50pm, students get changed immediately in the on-site changing rooms and meet in the cage. If they have their practice locally, they are walked over to the facility for training and are then walked back at 5.30pm.

Following after-school fixtures and school practices

Following away fixtures, students will be dropped back at the London Road site in Kingston. A member of staff will always ensure that the student knows the means by which they are making their way home, and an adult will always remain there until all students have been collected. It is expected that parents arrange for student collection to be within as close a time as possible to the estimated arrival time back at school.

After-school sports practices off-site finish at 5.50pm. Students can make their own way home from Ditton Field (or the off-site facility) or, alternatively, they can catch the return bus to school leaving Ditton Field at 6.00pm.

Following before-school practices (Ditton Field/Boat Club)

Following before-school training sessions, students can catch the return to school bus, which departs Ditton Field/Boat Club at 8.00am.

24

SPORTS TOUR & TRAINING CAMP SELECTION PROCEDURES

Sports tours form an essential part of a ‘higher and wider’ concept and contribute significantly to the holistic education in which we believe. Sports tours can give students the opportunities they would otherwise not have and help in promoting the School as an institution of engagement, excellence and endeavour.

Sports tours motivate students, build a ‘whole school’ spirit and stimulate improvement in sport. They also have cultural and educational value and form part of a wider co-curricular programme. Previous touring destinations have included; Holland, Germany, South Africa, West Indies, Malta, Spain, Argentina, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and many more. Rowing training camps are a vital part of the rowing programme. Rowing camps are held at various times throughout the year in the past have included France, Belgium and Spain.

KGS strives to: • Ensure that tours are affordable and attainable. We try to avoid a major tour double hit if possible (in terms of cost) • Provide the opportunity for performance, aspiration and participation strands where possible • As a mixed independent day school, provide tours for single sex, mixed sex and mixed aged groups across a variety of sports • Include an element of cultural exchange • Provide a short haul and a long haul tour option in the seven years a student is at the School • Offer touring opportunities across a range of sports

Tour Guidelines

• Not all long haul tours will be for Senior students. Some long haul tours may include younger age years • Students must represent the School on a regular basis to attend performance or aspiration tours (e.g. U14 C team hockey player or above) • All performance tours will be based on clear selection criteria based on attitude, aptitude and attendance • Performance tours will generate suitably strong competition and should be seen as a culmination of reaching the pinnacle of sporting performance.

.

KGS SPORT CODE OF CONDUCT

The KGS Sport Code of Conduct applies to students, parents, spectators and visitors and is aimed at providing a set of principles for all to adhere to.

KGS students should: • Conduct themselves in a manner fitting with the School’s behaviour guidelines • Treat all match officials, KGS and opposition staff, students, parents, facilities and equipment with respect • Be positive in their behaviour by encouraging and acting as role models regardless of their position within the squad/crew • Be correctly prepared to participate by wearing the correct kit, with a full set of equipment, and being punctual for sessions and fixtures • Respect the School’s availability procedure and take pride in representing the School, always demonstrating fair play and sportsmanship

KGS parents/spectators/visitors

We value hugely the support shown by parents at sporting fixtures both home and away. Our students play sport because they enjoy it and we want you to enjoy the fixtures as much as they do. We request that all spectators show both teams, officials and coaches the respect they deserve. Please do support and encourage all players by applauding good play from both teams, being good role models on the touchline, congratulating the opposition and making their players and supporters feel welcome.
