CHAPTER 4 Early Yachts IN THE R.V.Y.C. FROM 1903 TO ABOUT 1933 The following list of the first sail yachts in the Club cannot be said to be complete, nevertheless it provides a record of the better known vessels and was compiled from newspaper files of The Province, News-Advertiser, The World and The Sun during the first three decades of the Club activities. Vancouver newspapers gave very complete coverage of sailing events in that period when yacht racing commanded wide public interest. ABEGWEIT—32 ft. aux. Columbia River centerboard cruising sloop built at Steveston in 1912 for H. C. Shaw, who joined the Club in 1911. ADANAC-18 ft. sloop designed and built by Horace Stone in 1910. ADDIE—27 ft. open catboat sloop built in 1902 for Bert Austin at Vancouver Shipyard by William Watt, the first yacht constructed at the yard. Addie was in the original R.V.Y.C. fleet. ADELPIII—44 ft. schooner designed by E. B. Schock for Thicke brothers. Built 1912, sailed by the Thicke brothers till 1919 when sold to Bert Austin, who sold it in 1922 to Seattle. AILSA 1-28.5 ft. D class aux. yawl, Mower design. Built 1907 by Bob Granger, originally named Ta-Meri. Subsequent owners included Ron Maitland, Tom Ramsay, Alan Leckie, Bill Ball and N. S. McDonald. AILSA II—22.5 ft. D class aux. yawl built 1911 by Bob Granger. Owners included J. H. Willard and Joe Wilkinson. ALEXANDRA-45 ft. sloop designed for R.V.Y.C. syndicate by William Fyfe of Fairlie, Scotland and built 1907 by Wm. -

The land back of the water's edge was dense forests of huge native trees and along the Lake Washington shoreline, there were few spots shallow enough to land the boat. -

CHAPTER 1 Founding of Yachting BURRARD INLET, ENGLISH BAY AND THE GULF OF GEORGIA From the earliest days of human habitation on Burrard Inlet the most practical means of transport was by water. The Indian tribesmen who were settled on both sides of the inlet travelled everywhere in their dugout canoes, and sometimes hoisted a crude blanket sail to ease the labour of paddling. Later, after the coming of the white man the native population utilized discarded Hour sacks fashioning very accept able and useful sails. The first European visitors to sight Burrard Inlet came by sail on July 5th, 1791, when Don Jose Maria Narvaez and the crew of the 36 foot schooner Santa Salurina from Spain sailed into the outer waters of our present day magnificent harbour. The first yachtsman may be said to have arrived a year later, when Captain George Vancouver r.n. and members of his crew surveyed the upper reaches of the inlet as far as present day Port Moody. His Majesty's ships Discovery and Chatham were not employed for this purpose. They were too large and unwieldy to navigate the narrow inlet waters and were anchored at Birch Bay. Vancouver used instead two small tenders, a yawl and a launch, which operated under both sail and oar power. On the first memorable voyage into Burrard Inlet beyond the First Narrows, Captain Vancouver commanded the yawl and Lieut. Peter Puget the launch. They apparently passed through the First Narrows under sail, for Vancouver relates that after being greeted by about fifty Indians, "For the sake of the company of our new friends, we stood on under easy sail, which encouraged them to attend us some little distance up the arm." The English sailors spent the night of June 13th 1792 at Port Moody, most of them sleeping in their boats.
