Deafness in American culture has been considered an obstacle thousands of people have had to overcome since the dawn of time. Even in the not so distant past, the future was typically very exposed for individuals who were born or became deaf. However, the future of an individual who is Deaf has become much brighter due to the development of American Sign Language. For example, they communicate by sign language, lip reading and speech. One of our gym teachers, Mrs. Harper, had decided to have a silent lunch to show students how it feels to be deaf. She has also included a sign language class for students to get the opportunity to learn about deaf culture and how to communicate with ASL. Here is her reasoning behind this: “I chose to do an ASL class because I love the language and consider it an asset to be able to communicate using it. As we have many bright students here, I figured it'd be a great opportunity for the HUM III scholars to learn a new culture and language, while enhancing their marketability when entering the workforce. I was inspired to learn ASL while working with my Deaf dancers in Houston, and my close friend and interpreter Jennifer Gelfo.”

ICE CREAM SOCIAL By Ryan Graham

What would you do for a Klondike bar….or any type of ice cream really? On September 27, 2019 an Ice Cream Social went down in the cafeteria of HUM III. The ice cream social was for kids who didn’t know anybody, to get to know some students around the school and make friends. There was also a registration table for clubs in the school.

So how did members of HUM III feel about this event? Well, Fatu commented on the ice cream saying “the ice cream social was lit, and the cream was bomb, and the music was popping, and I also had a lot of fun. I saw people dancing. It was a huge success.” Kiana commented on the ice cream saying “It was fun. I had a good time, and I loved the ice cream.” Cetira commented: “The ice cream tasted wonderful, it was successful.”

I hope to see more flavors of ice cream and even more socializing in the future. The ice cream social was a big success. People signed up for clubs, students made more friends, and I feel like it would be a good idea to have it again next year. People were eating ice cream, enjoying it and dancing, having fun, laughing and all. November 2019 (V. 6) ELITE News Breast Cancer Awareness By Sierra Brewster October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month, where we show support to anyone who has breast cancer, knows someone who has it, wants to support or get informed about it, or is worried about it potentially affecting them or someone they love. Breast cancer is the uncontrolled growth and multiplying of abnormal cells in the tissues of the breast. These extra cells create masses of tissue called tumors. Breast cancer usually occurs in women, but can also occur in men. Some symptoms of breast cancer include: a lump/mass, swelling, redness, inflammation, discharge, itchiness, peeling/flaky skin, or changes in color in or around your breasts. To help prevent breast cancer, try avoiding excessive alcohol consumption, maintain a healthy diet containing plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, exercise, and maintain a healthy body mass index. Also, make sure you occasionally check for these symptoms yourself or go to a doctor, especially if your family has a history of breast cancer. There are many ways to show your support for breast cancer awareness, which include donating money to charities (such as the National Breast Cancer Coalition, Breast Cancer Research Foundation, National Breast Cancer Foundation, and much more), wearing pink clothing and ribbons, and going to awareness walks. I interviewed Fatu, who went to the American Cancer Society Strides for Breast Cancer Walk on Sunday, October 20, 2019 along the Coney Island Boardwalk, to see how it went and what it meant to her: “People were dancing. You could feel the love [and happiness] in the air, and I feel like it really helps. I feel like [the walk] brings the community together. When that happens, you see the real problems and sicknesses people go through. It helps to show that people aren’t just weak and that we can help them, and show them support. The walk was a good experience because a year ago my neighbor passed away from breast cancer. She was the person I used to go to afterschool when my mom was working. We used to talk everyday. I used to have anger issues in middle school and fight a lot. [One time] I got suspended 6 months straight. I was in and out of suspension. I calmed down because of her. She always used to help me out with my anger issues. I was in a dark place Bto rtheeaposintt Cwhaerne cI weorulAd wcomaereannd enost stalk to anyone. She was the only one I could talk to. Last year I couldn’t go to the walk, so this year I went to honor her. She made me realize what life was. There’s a difference between living and just breathing, and I was just breathing. She taught me the differences because I felt like I had no purpose in life. She helped me start living. She didn’t have her own kids around so she became like my second mom, and even helped mend the relationship with my own mother.” Things like the American Cancer Society Strides for Breast Cancer walk, and wearing pink clothing and ribbons help people come together and share sympathy and empathy to support those affected by breast cancer. For more information or to donate you can visit one of the following sites: https://donate3.cancer.org/, https://give.bcrf.org, https://www.breastcancerangels.org/ and more. Breast cancer can be fatal, but many people also survive. Knowing as much possible information can be significantly helpful to you and everyone else. Elevate to Escalate By Fatumata Kamara We were introduced to Elevate Education on September 23rd, first thing in the morning. Seniors and Juniors scattered to get a seat anxiously waiting on what was going to happen next. That's when the introduction of how to study effectively and consistently started. The workshop was three days long from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm, that went over three fundamental ways of studying effectively. The first step was “study essentials” the idea of this step is you need to familiarize yourself with all the types of studying tools, and see what works for you. The second step was “memory skills” which dealt with the way you memorize/take in information. The third step was “how to ace the exams” this is the combination of memory skills and study essentials and performing well on the test. Memory Skills are very important to have One Study Essentials that you need to know is A cool step you need to know in order to to do any type of career. Whether you want annotating skills. Yes, we all know that annotating ace any exams is figuring out your mistakes. to be a doctor to even wanting to be a takes a lot of time and seems annoying, but it keeps Once you figure out where you’re having rapper, you need memory skills to prosper your notes organized. There's different ways to troubles, you can work on fixing that. For in these careers. One way to help you annotate your notes, one example is Cornell Notes. example, if you know you’re not good at master having good memory skills is taking According to http://lsc.cornell.edu/notes.html, 5 time management, you can set due dates for away any distractions around you, for things you need to master Cornell Notes are yourself and push yourself to hitting those example, your phones. This allows you to recording the information, asking any questions that due dates. focus on the information at hand. One you’re unclear of (helps bring awareness to your memory skill that may help you is misunderstandings), reciting (saying the notes repeating the information over and over out allows you to remember the information), reflecting loud. The three key steps are attention, (helps you to understand the notes you took better), storage, and recall. and last but not least, reviewing (allows you to memorize and see what changes moved).

After the workshop I asked a few kids around the campus about their experience. Merlina (junior) said the workshop was fun, but she tended to get bored at times. The anticipation made her continue to pay attention. She learned that she had a procrastination problem and if she turned off her phone or put her phone somewhere she can’t access that would eliminate her distraction. I also asked Skytasia (senior) she said, “Some of it was enlightening and some of it was repetitive” another question that I asked her if she felt the workshop was useful “To an extent it was useful, but I already knew a lot of what they were going over.” These studying tips not only allow you to self-reflect, but also take the 2 initiative and monitor your own actions. The Elevate workshop left us with knowledge that can last us a lifetime. November 2019 (V. 6) ELITE News Hamilton Trip By Jason Lubrun

“[BURR]I am the one thing in life I can control.”-Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton: The Revolution, a simple yet relatable quote that when I read it simply means that I have full control or am aware of what actions I take in life. On January 20, 2015, a musical by the name of Hamilton was performed at The Public Theatre in NYC. Created and starred by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton was a hit and grossed $4 million (as of Jan 2, 2019). The musical is based on the life story of Alexander Hamilton, America’s first secretary of the treasury and was George Washington’s former aide during the revolutionary war. Singing, rapping, and choreography all went into the storytelling with modern references here and there.

On October 30th, during a trip I got the chance to see Hamilton with my own eyes and it was an experience like never before. On this trip We got to see Manhattan’s beautiful lights, crowded streets, and the smell of hotdogs from the food vendors was an absolutely nostalgic feeling of the times my mom and I took trips to Manhattan when I was little boy. After a bit of sidewalk traffic I entered the Richard Rodgers Theatre, and Jesus Christ it looked like a mansion! I felt an adopted boy finding out his adoptive parents are rich. Then the student performances and Q&A happened. Lunch came afterwards and we arrived back to the theatre. The lights dim and the play begins. BOOM! My ears are shocked. I hear a voice that sounds like they practiced singing for 100 years. The introduction of the play alone would’ve gotten a 10/10 from me. A lot happened afterwards which I would refrain from telling because I want the reader to go watch it themselves, but the 15 minute break left me desired for more.Throughout the play I’ve also learned some new things about Alexander Hamilton that I didn’t know previously. For example(SPOILER ALERT): Alexander Hamilton had an affair with another woman and paid the woman’s husband to keep quiet, so that Eliza Hamilton(His wife) wouldn’t find out. The actors voices were amazing and the way everyone instage moved felt fluid and natural. What I’m most impressed about is how historically accurate it is. From telling the full backstory of Hamilton to minute details like Hamilton wearing glasses during his duel with Aaron Burr. Finally the play finishes with an emotional ending that may or may not leave you in tears depending on how lighthearted you are.

If Alexander Hamilton were alive today and he were to see this, he would be so proud that he would go onstage and shake each actor’s hand, that’s how good this play is. The fact that they were able to use singing, rapping, choreography and a sprinkle of modern references while making it enjoyable to watch deserves an automatic 11/10 from me. I would definitely recommend you watch this musical/play/masterpiece if you have the time. I have not recognized a negative from this play, only positives. Also before you look away have this; It is 68°F and Aaron Burr goes to Alexander Hamilton and snatches his coat off him. What does Alexander say in response? “Burrrr!”

Mario Kart App By Jason Lubrun Remember bringing your DS to school and playing Mario Kart with your friends? Or when you invited the bros over for a game of Mario Kart 8 deluxe. Well, Mario Kart is back! In the form of a mobile game called Mario Kart tour. Nintendo released this game in late September 2019, and ever since its release the game has been a hit. Worldwide the game has hit 10.1 million downloads with more players joining in the trend.

Mario Kart Tour is available on IOS and Android for free. Once you download and enter the game you are welcomed with a tutorial. After completing that the home screen pops up and you see that the races comes in four, the last race being a trial that needs to be completed to move on to the next cup. In the settings you have the usual mobile settings and when you press the menu you will notice something new, gems. Mario Kart Tour has microtransactions in the form of gems that you can spend actual bread on to get more. You can then spend those gems on chests that are used to unlock characters, carts, and gliders unlike other Mario Kart games that have all that available. Also Mario kart has a “Gold pass” that when bought gives you access to 200cc, secondary gifts from the gift boxes, and player tags. The Gold pass is a monthly subscription of $5 a month with first- timers receiving a 2 week free trial. Did I forget to mention that multiplayer is not available? If you check your menu and look at “multiplayer” and try to click on it doesn’t work. No official statement has come out from Nintendo about the release date of multiplayer, but it should come before the end of the year.

Is Mario Kart Tour worth the time? That’s entirely up to you. Would you like to grind the game to unlock your favorite characters that are only available in chests that you have to grind gems for? Or would you still play the game knowingly multiplayer is still not out as of October 2019? Or have no access to 200cc without buying the game pass? The game is made to produce revenue and Nintendo has gone a different approach with this game unlike other Mario Kart games. 'Malicious' Reviews By Maleisha Sosa What type of music do you listen to? It all depends on your emotions and the type of person you are. Are you someone who listens to music and actually listens to the words and tries to find the meaning? Are you someone who gets emotional attached to songs? Or are you someone who gets up and dances? Whatever type of person you are, I got you. Going around the school you learn the different personalities that make this school diverse. You can see different things about a person just by knowing what they listen to. A fair amount of females are in love with Summer Walker’s new album “Over it”. It makes them feel like “Breaking up with their boyfriend then taking them back.” Girls like this are emotional, if you like to cry to songs and are constantly in your bag, add Summer Walker to your playlist. Now let's get to a real “GOAT”: YNW Melly, currently incarcerated, but still very influential. , a rapper who is just like YNW Melly uses his lyrics to show his pain and share it with. , another young rapper that“makes you want to do drive bys but still be in your feelings”. The one thing that these rappers have in common is that their lyrics make you feel a wave of different emotions. Rappers like NBA Youngboy, , and Gherbo are loved because story behind their lyrics, their music is more for people who listen to music to enjoy the lyrics and understand the meaning behind the song, especially Gherbo since it's been said “ It's not that Gherbo can’t catch the beat, the beat can’t catch him”. I have saved the best for last, going around the school there was one person who almost everyone mentioned:Jah Diallo, but we know him as Jameek Boyd. At 15 he wrote and created “Remember Me”, he says “Remember me mistaken me for 17” this song was able to show people that Jameek wasn’t just a 10th grader going to NVCHS. He started to make a future for himself and succeeded, a lot of people who ARE 17 could not relate, he was recognized by Sheff G, a well known rapper that started off as a local Brooklyn rapper, but is now moving up in life making his music international. This is where I see Jameek in a few years. You heard it hear first Jameek Boyd “Jah Diallo” the next Brooklyn rapper to break the charts. “Stay tuned in for my appearance… movie viral” ~Jah Diallo Halloween Poll By Cetira Hayes Stop what you’re doing. Yes, you. Guess what? A poll was sent out to the entire student body of Humanities III. On average, most students agree that Halloween, Trick ‘r Treat, and Candyman take the spot as top scary movie. In second place, is Scary Movies to tell in the Dark. The rest are listed down below, labeled by color. It seems a majority of students enjoy Halloween, Trick ‘r Treat, and Candyman as our winners. If you’d like to see more polls like these, don’t hesitate to send in suggestions to Ms.Baurle! If scary movies are your thing, don’t hesitate to watch the suggested movies for the fright of your life this fall! 4 November 2019 (V. 6) ELITE News

Op/Ed: HUM III Going Wild By Imani Ware Have you heard? Humanities III’s suspension rates are higher than last year. Humanities III students are going bonkers! Most days it just feels like there’s just a black cloud of bad energy floating around with the students in the school. What makes it worse is that everyone feeds off of each other’s energy. Kids are getting excluded from events because of bad behavior, but the only person to blame for that is themselves. We have to do better as a school because we want more fun things to happen in school, but if only a tiny portion of kids are able to participate in it, what’s the point? In September 2018 there were 0 suspensions, 2019 September there was 4 suspensions, 2018 October there was 4 suspensions, 2019 October there was 12 suspensions. Do you see the big change? We have to do better as students, BUT as a school and STAFF you have to make students feel comfortable to come to you when they are having a bad day. We shouldn’t have to make appointments to talk to someone. How am I supposed to know this person was going to piss me off at this exact time to make an appointment? I feel like the number of suspensions went up this year because there aren’t as many people to speak to, or we get rushed to class while we are speaking to them. It’s not fair, it’s just stressful. There needs to be a space where we could go talk, let out some stress, and then maybe we will get better as a school. It seems like with the new students, the teachers are not reaching out to try to build relationships with the kids. As students we got to walk away from problems. I know its hard; trust me I been through it all. Try to find a teacher, get a good relationship with them, and whenever you feel like you’re gonna get into something, get a pass from your teacher or ask your teacher to email the staff member and go talk, or get a pass and take a walk. Your life would be way better without the drama; you will be happier and stress free. I know people would test you as much as they can but you cannot feed into it. In conclusion, we gotta do better as staff, leadership, and students, but most importantly we gotta do better as a school. They should start a mentor program where lower class students could go to upper class students that they trust and talk to about their problems.
