1 INTRODUCTION

This new technology exciter has the function to modulate the video and audio signals referring to the analog standard (PAL, NTSC or SECAM) and to convert the IF signal generated internally into the RF signal at the transmission frequency. The input video and audio signals are first of all modulated to generate the IF signal that is pre- corrected by a 12 slopes precorrection board and converted into the RF signal. The changing of the transmitted frequency is easily possible from the front panel working on the unit directly by software commands that modify the PLL local oscillator settings. It is possible to set whatever frequency inside the IV-V band only setting the desired channel using the front panel buttons, with a precision of 1 Hz thanks to the high precision oscillator present on the up-converter module. It is also possible to have any locking to a 5MHz or 10 MHz external standard oscillator, in order to obtain a high necessary stability ratio (precision offset). The standard setting is for a 10 MHz external reference but it is possible to change the setting for accepting a 5MHz input as indicated in the following paragraphs. All the main parameters of the unit, including the data related to the audio and video input signals, their processing and the output can be monitored in the front panel and also via WEB with a remote control through web browser: an internal board allows the unit to be connected to a LAN using a RJ 45 interface in order to have access to all the functioning parameters of the unit and to send commands working on a web page in a common web browser (Internet Explorer 6+) without the installation of any special software.

8 Audio and Video modulator board

This board accepts the audio and video signals and modulate them in order to have the IF signal on the output. In this board it is possible to make all the adjustments related to the optimization of the video and audio signals, and the adjustments related to the standard choosen by the front panel.

Video modulation The essential functions of this part are the following: * DC restoration circuit, fixing and maintaining a constant operating point of the modulator; * Additional video signal processing comprising corrections of linearity, , differential gain and white clipping; * Proper amplitude modulation of the IF vision carrier with the formerly processed video signal. * The modulation is effected in a Double Balanced Mixer giving at the output a double-sideband spectrum; * The required Vestigial-Sideband spectrum is achieved by the successive SAW filter; * The generation of the IF Vision carrier is made through a quartz, phase-locked to reference signal; * The combination of IF Vision signal with IF sound signal.

Audio modulation The audio modulation part performs the following functions: * Linear correction of the audio signals (pre-emphasis, low pass filter); * FM modulation of the carriers (A1, A2); * Combining of the two IF sound FM modulated carriers (in case of two carrier system).

9 Precorrection and Up converter board

This board make a pre-correction on the IF signal and convert it to the desired frequency set by the front panel. The IF Linearity Precorrector, allows for adjustment of the modulated intermediate frequency signal that comes from the modulator, modifying the amplitude and phase which are of non-linear function to the amplitude. This operation (“precorrection”) produces a modulated intermediate frequency signal from the linearity precorrector, in order to compensate the possible non-linearity of amplitude and phase which may have been introduced during the various stages of power amplification. Such non-linearity is responsible for the following : ƒ differential gain ƒ differential phase ƒ incidental phase modulation ƒ static non-linearity ƒ intermodulation (mostly significant in the amplifiers for normal amplification to the audio video carriers) The precorrection of the modulated intermediate frequency signal is effected according to the “I/Q” method: according to this method, the modulated intermediate frequency signal outputting from the modulator is firstly separated into two components in phase and by 90°(quadrature), thereafter each component is applied to a circuit with gain which is in non-linear function to the amplitude of the input signal. The outputs of these circuits are then re-combined. The possibility of changing the amplitudes of the two components separately in phase and quadrature, produces a non linear deviation of the phase and amplitude of the resultant signal.

11 5 Wps Final Amplifier Module (Driver)

This 5 Wps final amplifier module (driver) is composed from three ultra-linear amplifier stages of power for the UHF Band (IV- V band). This stage can be used for the amplification of analog or digital signals thanks to the ultra-linear characteristics of the devices present on the boards: in this way it is possible to obtain up to 7 Wps in analog mode (that correspond to 2.6 Wrms in digital standards).

Technical Characteristics

- Output RF power 5 Wps (CTX 5/U) 10 Wps (CTX 10/U) 20Wps (CTX 20/U) - Input power max 0.5W (CTX 5/U) for the last stage max 1W (CTX 10/U or CTX 20/U) for the last stage - Frequency range 470÷860MHz - IMD 1W / 5WP. out (-8, -16, -10 dB) < -60 dB - Gain about 50 dB (totally) - Return loss (in the channel) < -22 dB - Input/output connector SMB / SMA 50 Ω

14 10 MHz Reference oscillator

This module has an OCXO 5MHz/10MHz to grant a high stability to the oscillator: this can be loked to an external reference of 5MHz/10MHz precision such as, for example a GPS receiver. In such way the external reference determines the precision and the stability of the whole system. When the source of the external reference misses, the OCXO inside the unit guarantees the operation of frequency syntheses thanks to the internal stability.
