  • Introduction: Frictive Pictures 1 Cartoon Internationale
Notes Introduction: Frictive Pictures 1. There may be even earlier social groups united by an interest in pre-cinematic visual technologies or animation-like performances such as shadow-plays. But before animation came into being as a cinematic genre between 1898 and 1906 (Crafton 1993, 6–9, 21), these groups could not be properly termed “anima- tion fan communities,” and should be called something else, such as “zoetrope hobbyists” or “utsushi-e [Japanese magic lantern] audiences.” For that reason, I have chosen to begin with film animation in the early twentieth century, starting specifically in 1906–7 with the earliest verifiable hand-drawn ani- mated films in the West and somewhat less-verifiable experiments in Japan. Readers interested in the international influences of earlier visual media such as painting and printmaking on animation should consult Susan J. Napier’s fascinating history of fine arts influences between Japan and Europe, From Impressionism to Anime (2007). 1 Cartoon Internationale 1. For more on the technical specs of the Matsumoto Fragment, see Frederick S. Litten’s “Japanese color animation from ca. 1907 to 1945” available at http:// litten.de/fulltext/color.pdf. 2. Since the mid-2000s, there has been a small but heartening swell of inter- est in recovering and preserving early anime among film conservators and distributors. Some major DVD collections of pre-1945 animation include: Japanese Anime Classic Collection. Tokyo: Digital Meme, 2009 (4 discs, English, Korean, and Chinese subtitles); The Roots of Japanese Anime Until the End of WWII [United States]: Zakka Films, 2008 (English subtitles); Ōfuji Noburō Collected Works.

MIT Japan Program Working Paper 04.02 Progress Against the Law: Fan Distribution, Copyright, and the Explosive Growth of Japanese Animation Sean Leonard Massachusetts Institute of Technology Abstract The medium of Japanese animation is a powerhouse in the world of alternative entertainment. Proselytization by fans ignited the anime movement in America, despite Japanese copyright holders’ abandonment of the American market. The author presents an historical and legal analysis to demonstrate that, at least in one case spanning two decades, fans’ continual infringement of copyright spurred the progress of commerce and the arts. 1 MIT Japan Program Working Paper Series 04.02 Center for International Studies Massachusetts Institute of Technology Room E38-7th Floor Cambridge, MA 02139 Phone: 617-252-1483 Fax: 617-258-7432 Date of Publication: November 2, 2004 © Sean Leonard 2 Table of Contents 1. • Animation Fandom in North America and East Asia from 1906–2010 By
Animating Transcultural Communities: Animation Fandom in North America and East Asia from 1906–2010 By Sandra Annett A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Manitoba in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of English, Film, and Theatre University of Manitoba Winnipeg © 2011 Sandra Annett Abstract This dissertation examines the role that animation plays in the formation of transcultural fan communities. A ―transcultural fan community‖ is defined as a group in which members from many national, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds find a sense of connection across difference, engaging with each other through a mutual interest in animation while negotiating the frictions that result from their differing social and historical contexts. The transcultural model acts as an intervention into polarized academic discourses on media globalization which frame animation as either structural neo-imperial domination or as a wellspring of active, resistant readings. Rather than focusing on top-down oppression or bottom-up resistance, this dissertation demonstrates that it is in the intersections and conflicts between different uses of texts that transcultural fan communities are born. The methodologies of this dissertations are drawn from film/media studies, cultural studies, and ethnography. The first two parts employ textual close reading and historical research to show how film animation in the early twentieth century (mainly works by the Fleischer Brothers, Ōfuji Noburō, Walt Disney, and Seo Mitsuyo) and television animation in the late twentieth century (such as The Jetsons, Astro Boy and Cowboy Bebop) depicted and generated nationally and ethnically diverse audiences.

  • Transmutation and Recolonization in Japanese Animation: Battle of the Planets And
James McLean Transmutation and Recolonization in Japanese Animation: Battle of the Planets and Anime’s Growth in the West By the end of the 20th century, Japan was enjoying a market for anime that was extending beyond its country’s borders. While anime continued to be produced for the country’s domestic markets, international markets had developed a taste for Japanese animation. Prior to this, throughout the latter half of the twentieth century, the transnational flow of Japanese animation to the West and specifically to the United States had met barriers, both industrial and cultural. Anime franchises were not imported for value found in their Japaneseness but to be domesticated — transmutated and recolonized— so to fit cultural, political, and economic standards. This article argues that Sandy Frank Entertainment’s unconventional adaptation practices for transforming Tatsunoko Productions’ anime Kagaku Ninjatai Gatchaman —or Science Ninja Team Gatchaman— (1972) into the American television show Battle of the Planets (1978) responded to cultural, political, and industrial tensions surrounding American children’s cartoons, and in doing so, paved the way towards a broader acceptance of anime in America. Through the naturalizing of Gatchaman into Battle of the Planets, transnational content was appropriated and then relocated for local and again global distribution, thus creating a commercial and cultural acceptance of anime in the United States. This article will demonstrate how adaptation through deliberate cross-cultural transmutations can (re)create franchises under new domestic banners. Battle of the Planets, colonized by local cultural tastes and its innocuous injection of otherness aimed at young audiences, would lead to reidentification and revaluing of Japanese animation in America.

  • The Two-Way Cultural Street
DEGREE IN ENGLISH STUDIES Department of English and German Philology 2018-2019 The Two-Way Cultural Street The influence of US popular culture in the Korean Wave and Japanese anime and viceversa Author: Natalia Mirón Florido Tutor: Amaia Ibarraran Bigalondo Vitoria, 3rd of June 2019 Abstract The history of colonization has been marked by the Orientalist rhetoric used by Eastern empires to justify the invasion and colonization of the West. In the 20th century, the United States recycled this rhetoric to exercise their own version of imperialist rule through military occupation. Two of the earlier examples of this new form of imperialism are South Korea and Japan. As a result of the United States’ domination, these countries’ societies were remodeled according to the American ideal. They also received a constant flow of American culture that came to influence their own cultural productions. Today, thanks to their knowledge of US popular culture, Korean and Japanese cultural industries are able to manufacture products that specifically target US audiences, but differ in their strategies. On the one hand, Korean products portray their country as an outcome of US influence, by introducing references to US culture along with allusions to the Korean one. Depicting Korea as culturally hybrid has resulted in an acceptance that can be seen in the widespread popularity of Korean products, a popularity termed “The Korean Wave”. In the US, the most famous product of this Wave is K-Pop, as represented by the success of the band BTS. On the other hand, Japanese products are culturally odorless, i.e. they lack any trace of their Japanese origin.
