Koch Brothers Exposed: 2014 Edition
Presents: Koch Brothers Exposed: 2014 Edition A film by Robert Greenwald (56 min., USA, 2013) Language: English Publicity: Linsey Pecikonis Brave New Films Tel: 310-204-0448x225 E-mail: [email protected] High-resolution film stills may be downloaded at http://www.bravenewfilms.org/koch_presskit ABOUT THE FILM In early 2011, Robert Greenwald and the Brave New Films (BNF) staff questioned how to make ordinary Americans care about the activities of David and Charles Koch, billionaire brothers who were spending hundreds of millions of dollars to influence federal, state and local elections. The Koch brothers were not yet in the daily conversations of the average American, but that would change with the 2012 release of BNF’s investigative documentary Koch Brothers Exposed. Originally Greenwald envisioned Koch Brothers Exposed as a series of thirteen short investigative videos that shed light on the Koch political dealings and the negative impact their money has on a variety of aspects of American life. These mini-documentaries immediately went viral, and viewers made it clear to BNF that they wanted more comprehensive coverage of the Koch’s activities. The first edition of the hour-long Koch Brothers Exposed highlighted the Koch’s efforts to gut Social Security by spending more than $28 million to popularize the fiction that the federal program was on the brink of collapse. It also addressed the Koch’s attempts at re-segregating schools in North Carolina; their efforts at voter suppression by supporting misleading voter ID laws; and the disastrous impact of their environmental policies on oil and gas projects and on industrial toxic waste. -

How did we get here? The Disinformation Age assembles a remarkable group of historians, political scientists, and communication scholars to examine the historical and political origins of the post-fact information era, focusing on the United States but with lessons for other democracies. Bennett and Livingston frame the book by examining decades-long efforts by political and business interests to undermine authoritative institutions, including parties, elections, public agencies, science, independent journalism, and civil society groups. The other distinguished scholars explore the historical origins and workings of disinformation, along with policy challenges and the role of the legacy press in improving public communication. On June 25, 2004, my father’s excitement for the release of Fahrenheit 9/11 was so great, he went to see it by himself on opening night, while my sister and I opted out in favor of the simultaneous release of The Notebook. His frustration with the current presidency, and Michael Moore’s promise of a more complete look at the administration, drew him in, and he sped to the theater in hopes of finding a more complete truth in Moore’s work. Just over two years, he exhibited the same excitement for the British mockumentary Death of a President . While he was fully aware of the fact that it was not based on real events, he was still intrigued to see how the filmmakers simulated the act, and what sort of implications they felt such an act would have. -
Unmanned: America's Drone Wars
Presents: Unmanned: America’s Drone Wars A film by Robert Greenwald (63 min., USA, 2013) Language: English Publicity: Linsey Pecikonis Brave New Foundation Tel: 310-204-0448x225 E-mail: [email protected] High resolution stills may be downloaded at http://unmanned.warcosts.com/film_stills 1 LOGLINE Investigative Director Robert Greenwald captures never-before-seen footage from the tribal region of Pakistan and in-depth interviews with drone strike survivors and those most impacted by America’s drone policy to unravel the Obama Administration’s drone policy piece by piece in Unmanned: America’s Drone Wars. SYNOPSIS In Unmanned: America’s Drone Wars, the eighth full-length feature documentary from Brave New Foundation, director Robert Greenwald investigates the impact of U.S. drone strikes at home and abroad through more than 70 separate interviews, including a former American drone operator who shares what he has witnessed in his own words, Pakistani families mourning loved ones and seeking legal redress, investigative journalists pursuing the truth, and top military officials warning against blowback from the loss of innocent life. Throughout Unmanned, Greenwald intersperses in-depth interviews with never-before- seen footage from the tribal regions in Pakistan to humanize those who have been impacted by our drone policy. This footage, alongside interviews with Pakistani drone survivors, describes the brutal reality of drone attacks ordered during the Obama Administration. The film highlights the stories of 16 year old Tariq Aziz, killed by a drone a mere week after he participated in a public conference in Islamabad in 2011, and a school teacher, Rafiq ur Rehamn, grappling with the loss of his elderly mother and the hospitalization of his children due to a drone strike last year, showing how delicate life can be in this virtual war where no one is accepting responsibility for the casualties. -
Robert Greenwald to Release Another Misleading Video
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Sarah Clark, 479-273-4314 Robert Greenwald to Release Another Misleading Video Most Recent Effort Attacks Wal-Mart With Blatant Disregard For the Facts BENTONVILLE, Ark, Oct. 25, 2005 – Wal-Mart is aware that Robert Greenwald will soon be releasing a video attacking our company, our associates, and the communities we care so deeply about. We have seen the trailers and some “bonus” footage, and it’s already obvious that Mr. Greenwald has a careless disregard for the facts. Let’s be clear about Mr. Greenwald’s intent: it is not to present a fair and accurate portrayal of Wal-Mart. It is a propaganda video – pure and simple – designed to advance a narrow special interest agenda. So far, Mr. Greenwald has offered only criticism – and distorted criticism at that. He hasn’t offered solutions to the challenges that working families face every day in America. What does Wal-Mart offer in the way of solutions? What do we offer every day in our stores and communities to working Americans? We offer 1.2 million hard-working men and women not only jobs, but careers. We offer families the opportunity to save, on average, $1,250 per year by shopping at Wal-Mart. We offer African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, senior citizens and women a workplace consistently considered among the most diverse in America. We offer our communities the charitable support they need -- to the tune of $170 million last year alone – to do good works. From what Mr. Greenwald has already said and the footage he has already released, it is clear that his facts are wrong. -

Where Truth Lies
FALLON FILM & MEDIA STUDIES | POLITICS This boldly original book traces the evolution of documentary film and photography | as they migrated onto digital platforms during the first decades of the twenty-first HERE TRUTH LIES century. Kris Fallon examines the emergence of several key media forms—social net- W working and crowdsourcing, video games and virtual environments, big data and data where visualization—and demonstrates the formative influence of political conflict and the documentary film tradition on their evolution and cultural integration. Focusing on par- ticular moments of political rupture, Fallon argues that ideological rifts inspired the adoption and adaptation of newly available technologies to encourage social mobi- 9/11 after Media Documentary and Culture Digital lization and political action, a function performed for much of the previous century by independent documentary film. Positioning documentary film and digital media side by side in the political sphere, Fallon asserts that “truth” now lies in a new set truth of media forms and discursive practices that implicitly shape the documentation of everything from widespread cultural spectacles like wars and presidential elections to more invisible or isolated phenomena like the Abu Ghraib torture scandal or the “fake news” debates of 2016. “Looking at a unique and intriguing set of ‘hybrid media,’ Fallon convincingly makes a claim about a change in the form of new media, one linking politics, aesthetics, and lies technology.” ALEXANDRA JUHASZ, Brooklyn College, CUNY “Where Truth Lies does the difficult and much-needed work of unpacking how the KRIS FALLON documentary impulse is shifting in the digital age, both through the profound influ- ence of digital aesthetics and computational thinking and through the ways traditional documentary is infusing digital expression.” JENNIFER MALKOWSKI, author of Dying in Full Detail: Mortality and Digital Documentary KRIS FALLON is Assistant Professor of Cinema and Digital Media at the University of California, Davis.
