1 Methcognition: Taking the Information to the Front Lines Authors: *Eric S. See, *George E. Hendricks, and **Christopher M. Bellas *Methodist University, NC; **Youngstown State University, OH ABSTRACT Methamphetamine abuse has cost the United States billions of dollars and put the health and lives of countless children at risk. This research explores whether those professionals who work with children the most understand how methamphetamine is produced and consumed, as well as the potential risk it presents. It is hypothesized that those professionals who come into contact with children the most (criminal justice, social services, and community activists) will lack a general knowledge about methamphetamine, thereby increasing a child’s exposure to primary and secondary victimization. Data was collected utilizing a convenience survey sample of statewide North Carolina juvenile service professionals on their knowledge of methamphetamine use and its production in the year 2012. The findings show a disconnect between what the respondents think they know about methamphetamine and what they actually know about the drug’s production and use. The results suggest that their deficient knowledge about methamphetamine increases childrens’ exposure to victimization. The Methamphetamine Epidemic The goal of society should be to protect its children. While drug use is not a new social phenomenon, there has been one drug, methamphetamine, which has grown in popularity over the last decade. Methamphetamine, commonly referred to as meth, is a powerful drug and a central nervous system stimulant which is part of a larger family of stimulant drugs that includes cocaine, and ecstasy. The growing popularity of this substance derives from the fact that it can be easily and inexpensively manufactured without the need for extensive knowledge or background and requires few supplies for manufacturing (Weisheit & Wells, 2010). -

SCENE ONE (An empty stage. There is a podium and a projector screen emblazoned with the logo “WELLSTONE PROJECT.” A spotlight comes up on STEPHEN, who stands at the podium, dressed in formal attire. He carries a drink in his hand.) STEPHEN Thank you all for being here tonight – for your support – for honoring my brother’s life and legacy. (as HE speaks, the screen behind him flashes a portrait of Paul Wellstone) It would mean the world to them – Paul, and Sheila (the screen flashes a photo of Paul and Sheila together) – to see you all here tonight. (he sips his drink liberally and shakes himself out) I just want to apologize in advance – I never had my brother’s knack for public speaking. (HE chuckles nervously) But I always said… I always said my brother had a way of bringing people together… Sometimes in ways we might not expect. But – (the screen flashes a photo of a beach in Maryland) One way or another, it all leads back… to this. (without looking backward, the screen raises out of view, and the set changes to the beach seen in the photo, complete with a sunbathing SHEILA, reclining on a beach chair, reading a book) The beaches our parents took us to as kids… I haven’t set foot here in years, but I can still see it all like it was yesterday. (HE mimes to various parts of the set) The stand where they used to sell popsicles on hot days. (another) And over there, see? That’s where I built the biggest sandcastle you’d ever seen… Until Paul stepped in it. -

Lt. Col. Rodney Smith said that the Associa tion for the United States Army, AUSA, and the Corps of Cadets Just became recognized by ASUM as campus organizations this year but have not requested money from ASUM before. The two groups are seeking funds from ASUM to help with programs that are not fed erally funded, he said. ASUM Business Manager Sonia Hurlbut said she hasn’t' seen their requests yet, but “the philosophical question Is: Why does ASUM have to fund something that’s already funded?” Smith said even though both groups are affili ated with the ROTC, which receives federal funding from the U.S. -

INTRO: what I am about to tell you BODY: TELL IT. END: summarize what I just told you. The invisible threads that form identity politics are especially messy today. Through the lens of a transnational/intersectional/feminist sensibility, my thesis paper and body of work weaves influences from both visual and music culture. Socio-political agency is explored through reconfiguration. Both thesis and artwork are informed by the organizational principles of collage logic - specifically through the contrast in texture and rhythm, and employing the notion of the monster as a harmony of incongruence.
