The Synod of Dort, the Westminster Assembly, and the French Reformed Church, 1618-431 MICHAEL DEWAR The European Background In an age of ecumenical councils, from 'Edinburgh, 1910' and 'Amsterdam, 1948' to 'Vatican II', and beyond, it is often forgotten that the Reformers, insular and continental, were no less 'ecumenically' minded in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Richard Baxter wrote, 'The Christian world, since the days of the Apostles, had never a Synod of more excellent divines, taking one thing with another, than this [of Westminster] and the Synod of Dort. '2 These were the nearest to the Council of Trent that Protes tantism was to see. Yet earlier correspondence between Geneva and Canterbury shows that closer union might have been possible three generations before. Calvin had written to Cranmer, 'if I can be of any service, I shall not shrink from crossing ten seas, if need be for that object' ,3 (that is, of uniting the Reformed Churches). This was in 1552, the 'high tide' of Anglican Reformation, with Melanchthon and Bull inger for Cranmer's 'Lambeth Confere~e· also. It is tragic that this ideal, so broadly based on international and eirenic lines, came to nothing until Protestantism at home and abroad was hopelessly divided. For it cannot be urged that the 'Dordrace nists' and the Westminster Fathers were other than polemical in their intentions, and divisive in their results. The sixteenth century left the Reformed Churches inclusive and international. The seventeenth century left them enfeebled but embattled, exclusive and nationalistic. The Synod of Dort, 1618 Inevitably Calvinism was closely equated with Netherlands National ism. -

A. Denton, Texas August, 1977 I/7 Fling, William J., III, The Catholic Henri IV and the Papacy 1593-1610. Master of Arts (History), August, 1977, 130 pp., bibliography, 40 titles. This study explores Franco-Papal relations, and their effect on the French Church and State, from Henri IV's conver- sion to Roman Catholicism in 1593 until his death in 1610. Because Henri IV's primary concern, even in matters involving the Papacy or the Gallican Church, was to protect his kingdom from Habsburg encroachment, he was willing either to abandon his Protestant allies abroad, or to adopt reform measures, such as the decrees of the Council of Trent, that might weaken his own authority or disturb the peace of his kingdom. This caused repeated conflicts with the Counter-Reformation Popes Clement VIII and Paul V, to whom the primary enemy was always the infidel and the heretic. Wachtel 2013 Abstract My dissertation connects the Jesuit missions in Canada to the global Jesuit missionary project in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries by exploring the impact of French religious politics on the organizing of the first Canadian mission, established at Port Royal, Acadia, in 1611. After the Wars of Religion, Gallican Catholics blamed the Society for the violence between French Catholics and Protestants, portraying Jesuits as underhanded usurpers of royal authority in the name of the Pope—even accusing the priests of advocating regicide. As a result, both Port Royal’s settlers and its proprietor, Jean de Poutrincourt, never trusted the missionaries, and the mission collapsed within two years. After Virginia pirates destroyed Port Royal, Poutrincourt drew upon popular anti- Jesuit stereotypes to blame the Jesuits for conspiring with the English. Father Pierre Biard, one of the missionaries, responded with his 1616 Relation de la Nouvelle France, which described Port Royal’s Indians and narrated the Jesuits’ adventures in North America, but served primarily as a defense of their enterprise. Religio-political infighting profoundly influenced the interaction between Indians and Europeans in the earliest years of Canadian settlement. -

A palace school was established by the Franks for the training of princes and nobles ; when Charlemagne ap pointed Alcuin as its superintendent, it rapidly became a great centre of learning. The palace school was founded by one of the pre decessors of Charlemagne for the training of the sons of princes and nobles. As a court school it moved about with the monarch from place to place. Charlemagne himself was trained there.1 He had some knowledge of Greek as well as Latin, and studied with the grammarian, Peter of Pisa ; possibly also with Paul the Deacon (t 797), a Benedictine monk and noted Lombard scholar, who taught Greek at his court for a time, and afterwards wrote a history of the Lombards. -

Tacitus' Germania and the Jesuit Relations: Intertextuality in the Transatlantic World of the Early Jesuits in New France. by Renée Girard, BA MA Program in History Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts Faculty of Humanities, Brock University St Catharines, Ontario 2015 Abstract The first Europeans who wrote about the Indigenous people of the newly discovered Americas, not only used medieval, but also classical literature as a tool of reference to describe 'otherness.' As true humanists, the French Jesuits who arrived in the New World were deeply influenced by their classical education and, as claimed by Grafton, reverted to ancient ethnographic texts, like Tacitus' Germania, to support their analyse of the Indigenous people they encountered. Books talk to books. Inspired by Germania, the early French Jesuits managed to convey to their readers a subtle critique of their own civilization, enhancing, like Tacitus, the virtuous aspect of the so-called barbarians they described while illustrating the corruption of their respective civilized worlds. This thesis suggests that the essence of Tacitus' work is definitively present in Pierre Biard's letters and his Relation. His testimonies illustrate the connection the early French Jesuits had with the humanist thought of their time. Keywords: Jesuits, Jesuit Relations, New France, Tacitus, Germania. Hall* Christianity is a religion that has been restlessly expansive ever since it originated in ancient Palestine. The fi rst phase of that expansion saw it spread from Palestine to Asia Minor and the eastern Mediterranean. Several centuries later, it was taking root in western Europe and parts of Africa. Yet another major phase of expansion accompanied the age of exploration that began c. 1450, a period that saw Christianity implanted in the Americas and parts of Asia. Up to this point, Christianity in the west was synonymous with Roman Catholicism; indeed, to this day, Catholicism remains the most visible version of Christianity as a world-spanning religion. But ever since the fracturing of Christianity between Catholics and Protestants in the sixteenth century, Catholicism has had to compete against three main versions of Protestantism: Lutheran, Reformed, and “radical” or Free. Of these three, the Reformed has had a special signifi cance in British North America. Before any of its adherents arrived in the New World, the Reformed had come to power in several Swiss city-states or federations, most famously, Geneva, in much of Rhineland Germany, and in the northern provinces of the Low Countries that broke off from the Spanish empire and became an independent country at the end of the sixteenth century (the United Provinces or the Netherlands).
