Saint Joseph: Spouse of our Blessed Mother Mary and foster father of our Lord, Jesus, Joseph is the Patron Saint of the universal church and of workers, especially carpenters. Saint John the Baptist: Son of Zachary and Elizabeth, and cousin of our Lord, John was the first prophet of the New Testament as he announced the coming of the Lord Jesus. He baptized Jesus in the Jordan River and was beheaded for his zeal and steadfast faith. Saint Ann: Mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary and wife of St. Joachim, St. Ann is often invoked as a patron saint of the sick. According to the 2nd century Gospel of James, she and Joachim dedicated their child Mary in the temple. La Milagrossa: Together with St. Catherine Laboure, a Daughter of Charity to whom the Blessed Virgin appeared, Our Lady revealed St. Catherine’s mission when she saw a picture of Mary standing on a globe of the world with light streaming from her hands. Around the head of the Virgin were the words, “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.” Saint Jude: One of the original apostles and considered a relative of Our Lord, St. Jude asked Jesus why he did not manifest Himself to the rest of the world, and Jesus answered that he and the Father would come to dwell with all who would come to believe in him. Also known as St Jude Thaddeus, he is the patron of hopeless cases. Saint Lucy: As the name "Lucy" means tight, it is perhaps most appropriate that her feast day, December 13, comes near the winter solstice, the shortest time of the year. St. Lucy is the patron of those with ailments of the eyes. Saint Anthony Abbot: Known as the Father of Monks, St. Anthony was born in Egypt around the year 250. Following the death of his parents, Anthony distributed his possessions to the poor and withdrew into the desert and lived a life of penance and solitude. Saint Rocco: St. Rocco tirelessly nursed many of the sick during the plague in Italy. When he himself became sick, he went into the woods where he planned to die quietly in prayer and meditation. While awaiting death, a dog miraculously brought him food and licked his sores and cured him. Many pray to St. Rocco to free themselves from diseases of the skin. Our Lady of Grace: We acknowledge this title for Mary as she was the mother of Jesus, Our Savior and the source of all grace. In this role as mother of Jesus, Mary carried the source of all grace in her womb. It therefore, reasonably follows that Mary would continue to be the vessel or mediator of grace from Jesus to us, her children. Saint Anthony of Padua: His great success was in France and Italy and in converting heretics. His sermons are noted for their gentleness and learning. He was the first member of the Friars Minor to teach theology to his brothers. We all know St. Anthony as the patron saint of lost things. "St. Anthony, St. Anthony, something’s lost and must be found ..." Saint Rita: St. Rita was born in Umbria in 1381. Married to a brutal husband and bearing two sons, she urged forgiveness rather than retribution when her husband was murdered. She later became an Augustinian nun and spent 40 years in prayer, contemplation and acts of charity to the sick and the poor. St. Rita is the patron saint of desperate situations. Our Lady of Assumption: Among the many graces afforded to Mary, the Mother of God, is her glorious assumption into heaven. Upon her death, Mary was assumed bodily into heaven, as a sign of our own future resurrection into heaven. This belief was declared an infallible teaching of the Church by Pope Pius XII in 1950. Saint Vincent Pallotti: Vincent Pallotti was born in Rome on April 21, 1795. He was ordained a priest and was a teacher, a founder of a religious congregation, a spiritual director, and was considered a visionary. Nearly 100 years before the Catholic Social Worker Movement, Vincent founded the Union of Catholic Apostolate in 1835. Our Lady of Guadalupe: In 1531 the Virgin Mary appeared to a Mexican peasant, Juan Diego, at the hill of Tepayac. The Spanish translation "de Guadalupe" from the original Aztec means "she will crush the serpent of stone.” Under this title, she is the patroness of social justice and the unborn as she appeared to St. Juan Diego as a pregnant woman. Padre Pio: Padre Pio was born Francesco Forgione in 1887 in a small Italian village named Pietrelcina. He became a Capuchin priest and was much sought after as a spiritual advisor, confessor and intercessor. Devoted to prayer Saint Martin de Porres: Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru to a Spanish father and a black slave mother. He became a Dominican lay brother and with great humility ministered to the poor and the sick, especially African slaves. Martin was a close friend to Rose of Lima and devoted to the Holy Eucharist. Saint Lucy Filippini: She was orphaned as a child and grew up with her aunt. Her education came from Benedictine nuns at Santa Lucia. Throughout her life she founded schools for women, and especially the poor. She was called by Pope Clement XI to work in Rome. She alter died of breast cancer in 1732. Sacred Heart of Jesus: The Sacred Heart of Jesus is a symbol of God's forgiveness, mercy and love. Jesus gave himself out of love on the wood of the cross. We celebrate the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Friday, two weeks after Our Lady of Mt. Carmel: Mary appeared to St. Simon Stock, a leader of the Carmelites, and gave him a scapular, telling him to promote devotion to it. The scapular is a modified version of Mary’s own garment. It symbolizes her special protection and calls the wearers to consecrate themselves to her in a special way. The scapular reminds us of the gospel call to prayer and penance—a call that Mary models in a splendid way. This feast was first celebrated in Hammonton with a small procession consisting of Italian immigrant farmers 139 years ago. The Our lady of Mt. Carmel Society, comprised of many of these farmers' descendants, has continued this glorious celebration to this day. BUONA FESTA!
