(For more details, refer page 107) Foreword Excellence, Expansion and Extension “Excellence, Expansion and Extension” are the words that come to mind to describe this past year at our Institute, closely inter-linked with each other. Excellence is the foundational value on which the Institute was built and continues to be our driving force. Progress on all the “Institutes of Excellence” conceived as part of our Vision “Next 25” (our vision for the second 25 years), was notable. Entrepreneur-philanthropist, Tej Kohli’s major commitment led to the inauguration of the “Tej Kohli Cornea Institute (TKCI)” that will encompass all aspects of our endeavours related to corneal disease and blindness, across all levels of service delivery, education, research and advocacy both within and outside our network. Millions of corneal blind globally will be the ultimate beneficiaries of this munificence. The “Aurobindo Geriatric Eye Centre” and the “Operation Eyesight Universal Institute for Eye Cancer” were other similar programmes that were launched this year. These, together with Child Sight Institute, Centre of Excellence in Eye Banking and Academy for Eye Care Education, will touch millions in the coming years. The concept behind is to continue our efforts at excellence in all facets, and foster our culture of crosspollination further among our clinicians, basic and public health scientists. Saluting the establishment of TKCI, our Ramayamma International Eye Bank came up with news of a record performance this year - distributing 25,000 transplantable corneas since inception, besides conducting the first ever corneal transplant surgery in a rural secondary centre, laudable efforts by our Cornea Team indeed. Another major expansion was that of our flagship Kallam Anji Reddy campus in Hyderabad. The new “green” building looks spectacular integrating features of patient comfort, safety, accessibility, and literally sits on a strong foundation (the boulders unearthed were found to be 2.6 billion years old). The expansion of each service is designed to cover greater volume with enhanced quality. The support for this project is again a great reflection of how well our Institute is regarded, with many among our friends and family contributing generously for its completion. The building is named “Velamati Soubhagyavatamma”, after the mother of the major donor. All the outpatient and surgical services are accommodated in this facility, extending our capacity by about 70 percent. The inaugural building where the Institute was founded in 1987 will now house facilities for education, research, innovation and administration, with considerable expansion of space for the former two. In recognition of her major contributions on a number of fronts since inception, this building is named in honour of Gullapalli Pratibha Rao. Education activities expanded to our tertiary centre in Vijayawada, enhancing our training capacity in ophthalmology, optometry and nursing. New and better facilities will be created that will help meet the ever increasing demand for education programmes from all over the world. Strengthening our efforts at continuing education with increased utilization of advanced technology for better quality and reach, were the other features of education this year. The vibrancy of research is quite evident from the publication record during the year. Our group received many new grants and innumerable laurels. The impact of the translational component of research is continuing to expand. My compliments to the many individuals who were recipients of special recognition, and well deserved honors. The Rehabilitation group continues to make us proud. More than a hundred of our clients secured job placements in reputed organisations, and the students among our clients recorded excellent scholastic performances during this year. Our rural eye health component has become bigger and better with our presence in more than 140 rural and tribal locations, touching the most neglected segments of our population with high quality eye care. I want to place on record our greatest appreciation to the LVPEI team contributing to this difficult endeavour. Another striking feature that surfaced was the depth of talent among the younger generation with a rich blend of professional excellence and leadership traits. The great expertise that we have on our Boards and their contributions is a constant source of encouragement to meet the ever increasing demands. This, coupled with a growing flow of support in all forms, made this year once again a very productive one. We are indeed indebted to all these people. While the year ended on a very positive note, the loss of two great friends and supporters of the Institute was deeply felt. Former President of India, who touched the hearts of millions, Dr. Kalam was a source of guidance and inspiration for us for nearly a quarter of a century. Brien Holden has been the biggest supporter ever. His fondness and friendship will be remembered by many in the Institute. Both these stalwarts helped us in focusing on excellence, and guided and supported us through much of our growth. We share the immensity of their loss with their near and dear ones.
