Sarna Let me begin with a bold thesis. The Israel of American Jews - the Zion that they imagined in their minds, dreamed about, and wrote about - was for centuries a mythical Zion, a Zion that reveals more Edited by about American Jewish ideals than about the realities of Eretz Israel. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, American Jews ALLONGAL depicted Israel as a "holy~' land, a land where desperately poor and scrupulously faithful Jews engaged in prayer and study; a land, in short, where the material life, values, and practices of Jews were precisely the reverse of American Jews' own. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, alongside this traditional image, a new one arose: the image of the romantic pioneer. the hard-working agricultural colonist, the brawny Jewish farmer - the answer. in other words, to those who claimed that Jews were mere parasites, racially incapable of "productive" labor. Finally. in the second decade of the twentieth century, Zionists like Louis D. Brandeis added a further twist to this image: Zion became for them a utopian extension of the American dream. a Jewish refuge where freedom. liberty. and social justice would reign supreme. an "outpost of democracy" that American Jews could legitimately, proudly, and patriotically champion., , , All of these images, whatever truth they may have contained, took on mythic proportions in America. When I began my service to Shearith Israel in September 1969, I was still a 24 year old rabbinical student. That first Rosh Hashana, I sat next to Dr. Pool on the synagogue’s Tebah, reader’s desk, where the congregation’s clergy are seated. Dr. Pool was 83 years old, frail, and in declining health. After services on the first night of Rosh Hashana, Dr. Pool placed his hand on my head and gave me his blessing, wishing me a happy and meaningful ministry. That was a special and sacred moment for me. When I shook Dr. Pool’s hand, I was shaking the hand of a great spiritual leader who had begun his service to Shearith Israel in 1907; he had taken over from Dr.

Among the organizations whose sponsorship of programs was obtained by the AJC were the National Conference of Christians and Jews, YWCA, Department of Justice, NYC Mayor's Committee on Unity, Girls Clubs of America, Public Education Association, American Heritage Foundation, Girl Scouts of America, and the National Social Welfare Assembly. Where the subject matter of the programs dealt with Jewish ceremonial and holy days, the AJC sponsored these programs directly, otherwise, the AJC was not publicly involved.

My goal here is to demonstrate that these ties stretch back much farther than generally known. Indeed, they actually precede the first Zionist Congress of 1897, and they embrace not only eco- nomic and ideological ties but even the flag of the State of Israel, which, as we shall see, has significant — if not widely known — connections to Boston and the United States. The Boston Jewish community was small in 1890, but already it was robustly Zionist. A total of about 35,000 Jews lived in the city, the majority of whom were recent immi- grants from Lithuania, where, in Jewish circles, love of Zion was commonplace. In Boston, Zionism faced fewer obstacles than in many other American cities. Boston’s large Irish population loved Ireland, so there was understanding and sympathy for Jews who loved Zion.

Cohn On January 5, 1895 Theodor Herzl witnessed the military degradation of Alfred Dreyfus. On May 14, 1895 the city council of Vienna chose as its mayor Karl Lueger, leader of the antisemitic party of United Christians; Austria was plunged into political crisis for over a year, while confirmation of this appointment by the Emperor remained in the balance. About the beginning of May 1895, Herzl was seized by the idea which led him early in June to begin composing his book, The Jewish State, in which he proposed the organized exodus of Jews to an auton- omous territory of their own, not necessarily Palestine.
