In 1934, the philosopher Paul Weiss called Peirce "the most original and versatile of American philosophers and America's greatest logician".[2] An innovator in many fields (including philosophy of science, epistemology, metaphysics, mathematics, statistics, research methodology, and the design of experiments in astronomy, geophysics, and psychology) Peirce considered himself a logician first and foremost. He made major contributions to logic, but logic for him encompassed much of that which is now called epistemology and philosophy of science. He saw logic as the Charles Sanders Peirce formal branch of semiotics, of which he is a founder.     Eero Tarasti THE RIGHT OF UNFUNCTIONALITY – EXPLORATIONS IN PONZIO’S PHILOSOPHICAL SEMIOTICS Few efforts have been made to renew or even reflect upon the epistemological bases of traditional or “classical” semiotics, established (roughly) at the beginning of the twentieth century and continuing up to the present day. It seems that traditional semiotics has accepted the normative communication model – such as that elaborated by Shannon and Weaver to improve the efficiency of telecommunication – as the self-evident starting point for any semiotic research. It requires a semiotician with a philosophical mind to go beyond accepted truths and search out new avenues for the study of signs. Augusto Ponzio is one such scholar. Grounded in philosophy, he at the same time takes a keen interest in the worldly phenomena of our Dasein, and does so with the kind of encyclopedic zest that characterizes the great semioticians of our time, from Roland Barthes to Umberto Eco. Ponzio’s version of semiotics is a fascinating combination of his roots in the line of Charles Morris/Ferruccio Rossi-Landi, Mikhail Bakhtin’s ideas on dialogue and, perhaps above all, the “existential” philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas. Ponzio’s interest in what may be called sociosemiotics stems from the first source, his ideas on Russian formalism from Bakhtin, and his fundamental view of Otherness from Levinas. It is tempting to argue that the common point for all these sources is the notion of subject as the primus motus of “semiosis”. Yet Ponzio turns the situation around: it is signs that constitute subjects, not vice-versa. In this aspect of his philosophy, he shows himself as a semiotician.

SOME QUESTIONS CONCERNING MUSIC SEMIOTICS VOCABULARY Music semiotics is a branch of music theory that has been particularly developing since the 1960s. As semiotics moved from general linguistics, structuralism and theory of communication to cognitive and psychological linguistics, as sources of understanding music cognition – that is, as it moved from “hard” to “soft” semiotics as Agawu calls them (1999: 154) – its vocabulary became strongly metaphoric and complex. At the same time, there was no strict convention concerning the usage of the vocabulary in question. In this paper, I will focus on some important interrelated issues of music semiotics vocabulary, such as the concept of meaning, and all rhetorical variations regarding this term in music. Special attention will be given to explanation of terminological issues of the two most prominent “languages” of music semiotics, that of Robert Hatten and Eero Tarasti. 1. Introduction Music semiotics has gone a long way since the first semioticians of music started to analyze music using the theory of signs, a subdiscipline of general linguistics. Before I present a brief view, from my own perspective, of how we ended here but started there, let me tell a small anecdote which illustrates how we perceive music. While working with a group of students, I gave them a simple task – to listen one musical excerpt and think of the best words for describing the sound.

    Tom Pankhurst Schenkerian Analysis and Existential Semiotics One of the attractions of Eero Tarasti’s A Theory of Musical Semiotics (1994) is its capacity to embrace a wide range of analytical approaches. Tarasti’s adaptation of the Greimasian generative course – in particular the concept of modalities – presented a way in which traditional analytical approaches might be revitalized as part of an attempt to understand more fully the processes of musical signifi cation. From a Schenkerian perspective, it offered a framework within which to reshape analytical insights and address some of the problematic epistemological assumptions that Schenker’s theories entail. Over the last decade, Tarasti’s basic theoretical model has undergone signifi cant re-orientation in order that semiosis may be understood in terms of acts. His conception of semiotic acts involves three different types of sign, the pre-sign (or enunciant), act-sign and post- sign (or interpretant). He states that ‘a semiotic act occurs as the production of an act sign by means of the help of a pre-sign or enunciant/utterant; or the act takes place as the interpretation of the act sign by means of the post- sign or interpretant’ (Tarasti 2000: 32) If this seems a little like Nattiez’s tripartite model – with the enunciant taking the place of poietic level and the interpretant standing for the aesthesic level – the resemblance is superfi cial and misleading. Tarasti’s model suggests not that the activity of the composer and listener can be related to a stable and neutral level, but that ‘the sign itself proves to be a rather ephemeral entity lying between these two “transcendences” [of pre and post signs]’ (2000: 32).

Greimas: The perfection of imperfection Andrius Grigorjevas,1 Remo Gramigna,2 Silvi Salupere3 Andrius Grigorjevas, Remo Gramigna, Silvi Salupere Understanding semiotics has never been an easy endeavour, partly due to the number of semiotic schools of thought and partly due to the missing links and connections between the theories. What also hinders the quest for understanding is that semioticians themselves tend to simplify and reduce the theories to their most distinctive features. Th is is mainly manifested through branding the leading fi gures with their most memorable tools or concepts: Juri Lotman with semiosphere, Charles Sanders Peirce with sign typology, Umberto Eco with codes, and Algirdas Julius Greimas with the semiotic square. Lastly, semiotic affi nities among the diff erent schools have primarily been expressed through antagonistic relationships, i.e. through denouncing other approaches in favour of a central one. Seen from such a reductionist perspective, the hope of reconciling them, or at least starting semiotic discussions between them seems to be a hopeless pursuit. And we know that connections and links resurface when semiotic thinking is revealed in its full scope, not when it is reduced to a few stereotypical fundamentals. 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of Algirdas Julius Greimas (1917–1992). For the very fi rst time, the journal Sign Systems Studies dedicates a special issue entirely to such an outstanding scholar. In the fi eld of semiotics and even beyond it, the name of Greimas has become associated with a number of concepts such as semes and semic analysis, fi gure and fi gurative, narrative grammar, isotopy and – evidently – the semiotic square.

    Memories of the body and pre-signity in music: points of contact between Existential Semiotics and Globality of Languages1 Francesco Spampinato (Geneva Emotion and Music lab - Geneva, Globality of Languages research center - Rome) The transition to new semiotic models, other than Greimasian structuralism, can be counted among today’s often interdisciplinary currents of thought and research. While Eero Tarasti, in the formulation of his Existential Semiotics, benefits from the suggestions of certain philosophical orientations in order to breathe new life into semiotics, Gino Stefani and Stefania Guerra Lisi, in the context of the Globality of Languages,2 refer to psychophysiological models to examine phenomena of communication and expression. These two semio-aesthetic paradigms, however, find common ground in a shard intention to move beyond “semiotics of rules and grammars” (cf. Tarasti 2002: 126). One particular aspect of this convergence will be examined in this text: the proximity between the notion of “pre-sign”, such as it is formulated by Eero Tarasti in the works Existential Semiotics (2000) and Signs of Music (2002), and the notion of the “psycho- affective memory of the body”, proposed by Stefania Guerra and Gino Stefani (2004, 2006). 1. Synesthesia, memories of the body and semiosis The conjunction that we would like to propose here thus goes in the direction well illustrated by Eero Tarasti in his description of the passage from classical semiotics to the new semiotics: the latter are primarily interested in the signification which precedes the formation of rules, and follow a chain of “pre-signs” which are related to the gestural and the emotional.3 For Tarasti, the life of a sign is always in a state of becoming, and the “pre-interpretant”, or “pre- sign”, is the first step of this life.
