Insect attraction to host plants may be partly mediated by visual stimuli. In the present study, the responses of adult Hycleus apicicornis (Guer.)´ (Coleoptera: Meloidae) to plant models of different colours, different combinations of two colours, or three hues of blue of different shapes are compared. Single-colour models comprised the colours sky blue, bright green, yellow, red, white and black. Sky blue (reflecting light in the 440–500 nm region) is the most attractive, followed by white, which reflects light over a broader range (400–700 nm). On landing on sky blue targets, beetles exhibit feeding behaviour immediately. When different hues of blue (of different shapes) are compared, sky blue is preferred over turquoise, followed by dark blue, indicating that H. apicicornis is more attracted to lighter hues of blue than to darker ones. No significant differences are found between the three shapes (circle, square and triangle) tested, suggesting that reflectance associated with colour could be a more important visual cue than shape for host location by H. -

Fennica 28: 219–232. Hycleus solonicus (Pallas, 1782), referred to H. polymorphus species group, is revised. Adults are redescribed and illustrated, eggs and first-instar larvae are de- scribed and illustrated for the first time, COI sequence for DNA barcoding is re- ported for the first time, the geographical distribution is revised and all available faunistic records from the literature and collections are summarized. In addition, two incorrect determinations are pointed out and Zonabris solonica var. dianae Sahlberg, 1913 is proposed to be a synonym of Hycleus scabiosae (Olivier, 1811). Z. In recent years there have been numerous studies focused on the anticancer action of cantharidin and its derivatives. Despite the recent interest in blister beetles, cytogenetic and molecular studies in this group are scarce and most of them use only classical chromosome staining techniques. E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Background: Beetle dermatitis is a very common condition in western Orissa. It is often misdiagnosed and causes signifi cant morbidity among the rural population. Aim: This study was conducted to determine the epidemiological and clinical profi le of beetle dermatitis in western Orissa. Methods: All clinically diagnosed cases of beetle dermatitis were included in the study. Detailed history was taken and thorough clinical examination was conducted in all the cases. One urban and three rural localities were visited regularly to detect the epidemiological trends of the disorder. Results: A total of 590 cases were studied: 486 males and 104 females. The age of the patients ranged from 2 to 65 years. Forty-four percent of the patients belonged to the pediatric age group. Majority of the cases (85%) presented during the months of March to July, indicating a distinct seasonal trend. The disorder was prevalent in the localities nearer to paddy and sugarcane fi elds and grasslands with stagnant water. The clinical lesions included papules, erosions, crusted lesions, urticarial plaques and vesiculobullous lesions. Distribution was mainly linear, but kissing lesions were also observed. Head, neck and upper extremities were the most commonly involved sites. -

Valle de Aranguren, 4 3º Dcha.; 31006 Pamplona (Navarra) INTRODUCCIÓN Los Meloidae constituyen un grupo de Coleoptera Tenebrionoidea especialmente interesante debido a: i) su condición de parásitos de Orthoptera e Hymenoptera en fases larvarias; ii) compleja metamorfosis, con larvas de primer estadio a menudo activas adaptadas para la foresis; y iii) estrategia defensiva ligada a su toxicidad por cantaridina. Están representados en la mayor parte del mundo, si bien tan solo algunos Meloini alcanzan áreas muy septentrionales. Dentro de esta familia se incluyen en la actualidad unos 120 géneros en los que se agrupan a unas 2.500 especies (BOLOGNA & PINTO, 2001). La clasificación de este grupo es actualmente objeto de revisión y cuestión, pero mientras se aclaran algunos puntos problemáticos y se alcanza un cierto consenso (SELANDER, 1991; BOLOGNA & PINTO, 2001), es razonable seguir utilizando el sistema más extendido de clasificación que, por otra parte, parece resultar más que plausible (BOLOGNA, 1991). Según éste, se distinguen cuatro subfamilias (Eleticinae, Tetraonycinae, Meloinae y Nemognathinae) de las cuales tan solo las dos últimas están representadas en la fauna europea, ibérica y aragonesa. El conocimiento existente sobre la fauna ibérica de meloidos es destacable, aunque incompleto en lo relativo a la distribución o incluso la presencia de ciertas especies. Los trabajos de diversos autores como GÓRRIZ (1882, 1902), RODRÍGUEZ LOPEZ-NEYRA (1914), las recopilaciones de FUENTE (1933) y sobre todo PARDO- ALCAIDE (1948, 1950a, 1950b, 1956a, 1956b, 1958, 1975) han hecho de los Meloidae casi una pequeña excepción dentro de los Coleoptera ibéricos. -
