The “sphecid’ fauna of Saudi Arabia (Hymenoptera: Apoidea) is listed. A total of 207 species in 42 genera are recorded including previous and new species records. Most Saudi Arabian species recorded up to now are more or less common and widespread mainly in the Afrotropical and Palaearctic zoogeographical zones, the exception being Bembix buettikeri Guichard, Bembix hofufensis Guichard, Bembix saudi Guichard, Cerceris constricta Guichard, Oxybelus lanceolatus Gerstaecker, Palarus arabicus Pulawski in Pulawski & Prentice, Tachytes arabicus Guichard and Tachytes fidelis Pulawski, which are presumed endemic to Saudi Arabia (3.9% of the total number of species). General distribution and ecozones, and Saudi Arabian localities are given for each species. In this study two genera (Diodontus Curtis and Dryudella Spinola) and 11 species are newly recorded from Saudi Arabia. Aculeate Conservation Group/ Hymettus Report for 2006 1. Background to 2006 Research. 1.1 During 2006 a new body, Hymettus Ltd., was constituted. Hymettus will take over and extend the role of the Aculeate Conservation Group. This report deals with research originally agreed at the 2005 ACG Annual Review and funded by English Nature (now also re-incarnated as Natural England), but executed under Hymettus Ltd.. During 2006 work was financially supported by English Nature, Earthwatch, Syngenta and the RSPB in accordance with the relevant Annex a documents, which see for details. 1.2 2005 Projects are reported in the following order of taxonomic group: ants, wasps, bees, other projects. 2. Ant Projects. 2.1 Formica exsecta 2.1.1 At the 2005 Review meeting Stephen Caroll was asked to enquire of the Devon Trust as to whether they would be prepared to consider looking at the possibility of proposing a landscape project for the Bovey Basin which would include the habitat requirements of Formica exsecta and , if so, whether a contribution from the ACG towards the costs of looking at this would be appropriate. 2.1.2 The Trust received this request enthusiastically and have submitted a copy of Andrew Taylor’s (their Officer) Report. Stephen Caroll will be able to bring us up to date with developments at the Review meting. A SURVEY OF THE BEES AND WASPS OF FIFTEEN CHALK GRASSLAND AND CHALK HEATH SITES WITHIN THE EAST SUSSEX SOUTH DOWNS Steven Falk, 2011 A SURVEY OF THE BEES AND WASPS OF FIFTEEN CHALK GRASSLAND AND CHALK HEATH SITES WITHIN THE EAST SUSSEX SOUTH DOWNS Steven Falk, 2011 Abstract For six years between 2003 and 2008, over 100 site visits were made to fifteen chalk grassland and chalk heath sites within the South Downs of Vice-county 14 (East Sussex). This produced a list of 227 bee and wasp species and revealed the comparative frequency of different species, the comparative richness of different sites and provided a basic insight into how many of the species interact with the South Downs at a site and landscape level. The study revealed that, in addition to the character of the semi-natural grasslands present, the bee and wasp fauna is also influenced by the more intensively-managed agricultural landscapes of the Downs, with many species taking advantage of blossoming hedge shrubs, flowery fallow fields, flowery arable field margins, flowering crops such as Rape, plus plants such as buttercups, thistles and dandelions within relatively improved pasture. Some very rare species were encountered, notably the bee Halictus eurygnathus Blüthgen which had not been seen in Britain since 1946. This was eventually recorded at seven sites and was associated with an abundance of Greater Knapweed. The very rare bees Anthophora retusa (Linnaeus) and Andrena niveata Friese were also observed foraging on several dates during their flight periods, providing a better insight into their ecology and conservation requirements. -

ABSTRACT. 231 species of the family Vespidae (Hymenoptera, Vespoidea) of Iran, in 55 genera belonging to 4 subfamilies Eumeninae (45 genera, 184 species), Masarinae (5 genera, 24 species), Polistinae (2 genera, 17 species) and Vespinae (3 genera, 6 species) are listed. An overall assessment of the distribution pattern of the vespid species in Iran indicates a complex fauna of different biogeographic regions. 111 species are found in both Eastern and Western Palaearctic regions, while 67 species were found only in the Eastern Palaearctic region. Few species (14 species – 6.1%) of various genera are known as elements of central and western Asian area and their area of distribution is not known in Europe (West Palaearctic) and in the Far East. The species that were found both in the Oriental and Afrotropical Regions comprises 11.7 and 15.6% the Iranian vespid fauna, respectively. Many species (48, 20.8%) are exclusively recorded from Iran and as yet there is no record of Received: these species from other countries. Labuan, MALAYSIA (email: [email protected]) ABSTRACT The list of Egyptian sphecid wasps includes the current names of those species recorded in the literature with indications where these have changed together with previously unrecorded genera and species. Three genera have not been recorded from Egypt hitherto (Spilomena, Crossocerus, Lestica). Twenty-four species are recorded for the first time (Chalybion heinii, Sceliphron madraspatanum tubifex, Sphex lanatus, Sphex libycus, Prionyx judaeus, Ammophila djaouk, Diodontus brachycerus, Spilomena sp., Astata boops, Dryudella beaumonti, Liris pictipennis, Solierella compedita, Miscophus pseudomimeticus, Belomicrus dimorpha, Belomicrus odontophorus, Oxybelus dissectus, Oxybelus haemorrhoidalis, Crossocerus adhaesus, Lestica clypeata, Bembix joeli, Cerceris clytia, Cerceris lunata, Cerceris rybyensis, Cerceris sabulosa algirica). INTRODUCTION This checklist forms part of a series of papers (Roche, 2007a,b; Roche & Gadallah, 1999; Roche & Zalat, 1994) dealing with the Egyptian sphecid wasps, of which the generic key (Roche & Gadallah, 1999) and Sinai list (Roche & Zalat, 1994) have already been published. The last complete checklist of the sphecid wasps of Egypt was that of Honoré (1942) which also included species of neighbouring countries which could perhaps be found in Egypt. This present list is based on a search of the literature, augmented by some species found in collections. It excludes some names given in the literature which are nomina dubia and nomina nuda, together with some where it is now believed that the species were recorded from Egypt in error. -

MADL A b s t r a c t : The genera in alphabetical order from Delta de SAUSSURE 1885 to Zethus FABRICIUS 1804 and species incertae sedis are catalogued. Several taxonomic changes are proposed. Introduction This is the second part of a catalogue of the Eumeninae of the Ethiopian Region excluding Malagasy Subregion. The first part was published by CARPENTER et al. (2009) consisting of the genera in alphabetical order from Aethiopicodynerus GUSENLEITNER 1997 to Cyrtolabulus van der VECHT 1969, as well as a key to the genera. That paper should also be consulted for explanation of conventions we have followed. This second part deals with all the remaining genera and the species incertae sedis and thus brings the alphabetical catalogue to an end. As CARPENTER & MADL (2009: Linzer biologische Beiträge 41 (2): 1871-1935) recently published a catalogue of the Vespidae of the Malagasy Subregion, the Eumeninae of the whole Ethiopian Region have now been treated. The third part will include additions, corrections, an index and a systematic review. Bug, Pentatoma Rufipes
A review of current knowledge of the forest bug, Pentatoma rufipes Glen Powell, NIAB EMR, East Malling, ME19 6BJ Summary Forest bug (red-legged shieldbug, Pentatoma rufipes) is a commonly occurring and widespread shieldbug species in the UK. It is particularly associated with woodland habitats and may remain in woodlands throughout the year, feeding on tree species such as oak, beech and hazel. However, forest bug also occurs in orchards and is emerging as an important pest of tree fruit in northern Europe. In recent years – particularly since the withdrawal of chlorpyrifos in 2016 – UK top-fruit agronomists have found increasing numbers of forest bugs in and around orchards. Their feeding activity on developing fruits is being linked with pitting and distortion damage to apples and pears. There has been limited scientific research into the ecology and control of this species, but some Belgian, Swiss and German studies provide valuable information on the timing of the life cycle and the effects of plant protection products. No information is available linking UK local population levels and activity with damage at particular times of the year. There has been no UK-based research on the effects of control strategies for forest bug populations or fruit damage. This review highlights several findings concerning the pest and makes specific recommendations for further work. Main findings • Damage to top fruit is triggered when forest bugs feed early in the season on developing buds, flowers and fruits (shortly after flowering). This results in later pitting and severe distortion as the fruit develops • Damage is caused by the overwintering early stage (second instar) nymphs • Low densities of infestation are sufficient for fruit damage. -

A total of 14 vespid species belonging to seven genera of the Nart Nature Reserve, subfamily Eumeninae were recorded from diff erent habitats (rocky outcrops, Mongolia springs, tall vegetation habitats, shrub-lands and short grass steppes) in the nature reserve during three-year studies (2015-2017). These species represent 27 percent Article information: of the vespid fauna of the desert-steppe zone of Mongolia.
