Jessica Ciencin Henriquez I’ve been dancing since I was 3,” says Juliet Doherty, an 18-year-old ballerina. “When I was training, I was told protein, protein, protein all the time, but I would get so lethargic.” In an effort to increase her stamina, Juliet started eliminating meat from her daily menu little by little and began seeing an improvement. By the time she cut out all animal products, Juliet knew she was onto something. “With a vegan diet, the food is dense nutritionally but not necessarily calorically, so you have to keep eating a lot throughout the day instead of just three heavy meals,” she explains. Juliet credits the continuous consumption of concentrated nutrients for her sustained stamina while en pointe. “When I’m performing or I have long days at the theater, I still feel like I have a lot of energy,” she says with a bounce in her voice. In fact, since going vegan, the talented dancer has added another gold medal to her collection of awards: at the finals in the Youth America Grand Prix, the world’s largest student ballet scholarship competition. Juliet attributes her success to a combination of discipline, communication, and hard work — and becoming a vegan hasn’t hampered her one bit. Judging by the nearly half million Instagram photos tagged #veganathlete and #poweredbyplants, more and more people are beefing up without the beef, and awareness of this plant-filled lifestyle is creeping into the mainstream. -

Dissertation Advisor: Michèle Lamont Author: Nina Gheihman Veganized: How Cultural Entrepreneurs Mainstreamed a Movement Abstract In the last few years, veganism transformed from a marginalized animal rights movement into a mainstream lifestyle. This shift occurred through the promotional work of change agents called cultural entrepreneurs. Drawing on over 150 interviews with these movement leaders, I describe three archetypes that emerged inductively from the analysis: Icons (image entrepreneurs), Informers (knowledge entrepreneurs), and Innovators (market entrepreneurs). Collectively, cultural entrepreneurs sacrifice ideological purity in pursuit of popularity. However, they are both enabled and constrained by the national contexts in which they are embedded. I compare the United States with two “shadow cases” that represent barriers to (France) and openings for (Israel) cultural diffusion. -

More Than Just A Diet: An Inquiry Into Veganism Abstract BACKGROUND: The vegan diet has gained momentum in recent years, with more people transitioning to the diet, whether for health or more ethically based reasons. The vegan diet, often characterized as very restrictive, is associated with health benefits but aisesr concerns. Controversy regarding the diet exists within the public sphere, with those actively supporting and advocating for it, and others questioning its purpose and proposed benefits, even disparaging its existence, perhaps because of a lack of knowledge about the diet. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to provide a fuller picture of the vegan diet, encompassing both the nutrition and health of the vegan diet as well as related ethical beliefs by studying scientific and popular literature in tandem. Furthermore, the study aimed to provide an insider’s perspective of the vegan diet as a means of combating stereotypes and making the diet more relatable/understandable to those who are not vegan. By combining all three sources, the project aims to educate the public regarding a diet and lifestyle that is often perceived, at least partially, in a negative manner. -

While they’re very similar, you may be vegan but not eat a whole food plant-based diet or you may eat a plant-based diet but not necessarily be vegan. Veganism is the practice of minimising harm to all animals by abstaining from animal products such as meat, fish, dairy, eggs, honey, gelatin, lanolin, wool, fur, silk, suede, and leather. It is more than a diet, it is a way of living that seeks to exclude all forms of exploitation and cruelty to animals for food, clothing or any other purpose. To technically be vegan, it would mean no down comforters, no wool socks, no honey, no gelatin-based sweets and of course, no eating dairy, eggs, meat or fish. -
