Subjectivity in American Popular Metal: Contemporary Gothic, the Body, the Grotesque, and the Child

Sara Ann Thomas MA (Hons) Submitted in fulfilment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts University of Glasgow January 2009 © Sara Thomas 2009 Abstract This thesis examines the subject in Popular American Metal music and culture during the period 1994-2004, concentrating on key artists of the period: Korn, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Tura Satana and My Ruin. Starting from the premise that the subject is consistently portrayed as being at a time of crisis, the thesis draws on textual analysis as an under appreciated approach to popular music, supplemented by theories of stardom in order to examine subjectivity. The study is situated in the context of the growing area of the contemporary gothic, and produces a model of subjectivity specific to this period: the contemporary gothic subject. This model is then used throughout to explore recurrent themes and richly symbolic elements of the music and culture: the body, pain and violence, the grotesque and the monstrous, and the figure of the child, representing a usage of the contemporary gothic that has not previously been attempted. Attention is also paid throughout to the specific late capitalist American cultural context in which the work of these artists is situated, and gives attention to the contradictions inherent in a musical form which is couched in commodity culture but which is highly invested in notions of the ‘Alternative’. In the first chapter I propose the model of the contemporary gothic subject for application to the work of Popular Metal artists of the period, drawing on established theories of the contemporary gothic and Michel Foucault’s theory of confession. -

While reading works like Don’t Let Me Be Lonely (2004) by Claudia Rankine, The Autobiography of My Mother (1995) by Jamaica Kincaid, and The Beauty of The Husband (2001) by Anne Carson, I was struck by their lack of traditional narrative frameworks. -

When We Were Together Foreword The OCHS Magazine of Literature and Art is a student-run publication to honor student art and to connect over the universal emotions of love, loss, and teenage angst. This year is distinct in many ways, with the sudden death of a member of our study body and other instances of grief, big and small. Naturally we seek community to experience these emotions together, to delight in the wonderfully mundane moments of life, and to viscerally endure the painful. Please do not feel the need to read memorial pieces if they will negatively impact your well-being. The above lyric contains several elements which indicate just how incomplete such a statement would be. Most importantly, it divides those who read it almost instantly: a metal fan, even if his taste is for a different subgenre of metal, will recognize a specific quality in this text. -

This novel retells the life of Beowulf’s classic villainess, Grendel’s mother. In The Mere Wife Grendel’s mother faces many of the same trials found in the original text; she is still at risk of losing her son, she is still hated by and excluded from society—in fact everything is the same, except that the narrative is now placed in a modern day, dystopian suburb. By placing a traditionally demonized figure in a contemporary context, I was moved by how the author was not only able to draw readers’ attention to Beowulf’s original problematic representation of women, but also how Headley was able to comment on issues women face today. Grendel’s mother faced issues in the original text such as not having a voice and having her worth being tied to her title as a mother, both of which seem strikingly similar to issues women face in the present. -

It showcases and celebrates the work of current students, faculty, and alumni. While the magazine has experienced a four year hiatus, it has been rejuvenated for its published authors and readers alike for this special Spring 2017 edition, and will henceforth be published annually. The hybrid course contained online and on-campus components as well as incorporated a seven-day visit to Belize where emphasis was placed on the past and present Mayan culture and its effects on the tropical rainforest ecosystem.
