16 LC 109 0002 House Resolution 969 By: Representatives Ralston of the 7th, Blackmon of the 146th, Dickey of the 140th, Hatchett of the 150th, and Clark of the 147th A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing and commending Warner Robins native and Miss America 2016, Betty Cantrell, 2 for her outstanding representation of the State of Georgia and her commitment to improving 3 her state and country through her work as Miss America; and for other purposes. 4 WHEREAS, on September 13, 2015, Miss Georgia Betty Cantrell was crowned Miss 5 America 2016, becoming the first Miss Georgia since 1953 to take home the crown; and 6 WHEREAS, Betty Cantrell is a native of Warner Robins, Georgia, and grew up on her 7 family's farm; and 8 WHEREAS, Betty Cantrell is currently a junior at Mercer University studying vocal 9 performance in the Townsend School of Music and aspires to graduate from a conservatory 10 for music and perform on Broadway; and 11 WHEREAS, as Miss America, Betty Cantrell has begun a national speaking tour highlighting 12 her platform, Healthy Children, Strong America, which promotes active lifestyles and 13 nutritious choices among children; and 14 WHEREAS, she also serves as the National Goodwill Ambassador for Children's Miracle 15 Network Hospitals; and 16 WHEREAS, Betty Cantrell embodies the spirit and values that make us all proud to call 17 ourselves Georgians. 18 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that 19 the members of this body recognize the accomplishments of Miss America 2016, Betty 20 Cantrell, and commend her for her exceptional talents and dedication to serving her fellow 21 Americans. MIKE KELLER / ©S&S SAIGON — She has traveled 320,000 miles and visited 43 U.S. states in the last year, but she liked Vietnam best of all. So says Miss America 1971 — Phyllis George — who called her trip to Vietnam the highlight of her reign. But, Miss George — who turns in her crown and title in less than two weeks — expressed the hope that no future Miss America would have to visit Vietnam. "I hope this is the last USO tour that has to come here," she said. "I hope they bring our guys home — I guess most people do." Miss George and six state beauty pageant winners spent most of August visiting U.S. troops in Vietnam. The girls were scheduled to leave in early September. "This has been an outstanding way to end a year," Miss George said. "The guys here have made it rewarding for us." The 22-year-old brown-eyed brunette said this was the first time she had entertained in a combat zone. Sink or Swim: Deciding the Fate of the Miss America Swimsuit Competition Grace Slapak Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA ÒÏ Abstract: The Miss America beauty pageant has faced widespread criticism for the swimsuit portion of its show. Feminists claim that the event promotes objectification and oversexualization of contestants in direct contrast to the Miss America Organization’s (MAO) message of progressive female empowerment. The MAO’s position as the leading source of women’s scholarships worldwide begs the question: should women have to compete in a bikini to pay for a place in a cellular biology lecture? As dissent for the pageant mounts, the new head of the MAO Board of Directors, Gretchen Carlson, and the first all-female Board of Directors must decide where to steer the faltering organization. The MAO, like many other businesses, must choose whether to modernize in-line with social movements or whole-heartedly maintain their contentious traditions. When considering the MAO’s long and controversial history, along with their recent scandals, the #MeToo Movement, and the complex world of television entertainment, the path ahead is anything but clear. Ultimately, Gretchen Carlson and the Board of Directors may have to decide between their feminist beliefs and their professional business aspirations. Underlying this case, then, is the question of whether a sufficient definition of women’s leadership is simply leadership by women or if the term and its weight necessitate leadership for women. Will the board’s final decision keep this American institution afloat? And, more importantly, what precedent will it set for women executives who face similar quandaries of identity? This scholarship event took place during the evening of November 4th, in San Ramon. Trisha Vijay, a recent University of California Berkeley graduate, was crowned the title of Miss Contra Costa County 2018. Trisha performed an entertaining Bollywood dance to, “Jiya Jale,” during the talent portion of competition. During the evening wear segment, she commanded the stage in her blush pink gown. “When I heard my name announced as Miss Contra Costa County, I was in shock and wasn’t sure if I heard the emcee correctly but I was ecstatic as I will get to represent my area at the Miss California State Competition!” said Vijay to her new Executive Directors, Paula Gross and Lindsey Nakashima, after she was crowned. After a small hiatus, the Miss Greater East Bay title was brought back this year and Danville resident, Alissa Anderegg, walked away with the 2018 title. Anderegg is a Duke University Graduate and current Northwestern University Masters in Journalism Candidate.
