  • Jockey Silks[2]
RACING SILKS A MULTI- DISCIPLINARY LESSON ON DESIGN FOR K – 12TH WHAT ARE RACING SILKS? Silks are the uniform that a jockey wears during a race. The colorful jackets help the race commentator and the fans identify the horses on the track. WHO DECIDES WHAT THE SILKS LOOK LIKE? • The horse owner designs the silks. • Jockeys change their silks each race to reflect the owner of the horse they will be riding. • When you see two of the same silks in one race, that means that both of the horses belong to the same owner. • Each silks design is registered with the Jockey Club so that no two owners have the same silks. This ensures that each design is unique. A FEW JOCKEY CLUB DESIGN RULES • It costs $100 per year to register your silks. You must renew the registration annually. Colors are renewable on December 31st of the year they are registered. • Front and back of silks must be identical, except for the seam design. • Navy blue is NOT an available color. • A maximum of two colors is allowed on the jacket and two on the sleeves for a maximum of four colors. • You may have an acceptable emblem or up to three initials on the ball, yoke, circle or braces design. You may have one initial on the opposite shoulder of the sash, box frame or diamond design. COLORS AND PATTERNS Silks can be made up of a wide variety of colors and shapes, with patterns like circles, stars, squares, and triangles. We know colors and patterns mean things, and sometimes horse owners draw inspirations for their design from their childhood, surroundings, favorite things, and careers.

When it comes to Europe=s top 2-year-old sprints in the summer, the female of the species often proves deadlier than the male. For example, the G2 Prix Robert Papin has fallen to fillies in seven of the last 12 years, with three of those winning fillies going on to Classic success at three. Last Sunday saw La Collina become the third filly in the last eight years to take the G1 Phoenix S. As one of her predecessors, Saoirse Abu, went on to take the G1 Moyglare Stud S. and to finish a close third in the 1000 Guineas, La Collina has to be considered a very bright prospect. However, she was by no means the only potentially top-class juvenile filly on display in Europe last week. I hesitate to suggest that Discourse could become another Zenyatta for Street Cry, but this Godolphin filly possesses bags of scope and plenty of talent, as she showed with her impressive victory in the G3 Sweet Solera S.

COSEQUIN PRESENTS AFTERCARE SPOTLIGHT: ARTIST EQUINES HELP RETIRED RACEHORSES by Jen Roytz Courtesy PaulickReport.com American Pharoah's Moneigh creation If you're looking for a unique gift for that horse-lover on your list this year, why not get something that helps you give back while gifting forward? Started by ReRun founders Lori Nagle and Shon Wylie in 2002 to raise money for their aftercare organization, the Moneigh portrait collection has become one of the most recognizable and creative fundraising ideas for the Thoroughbred industry and a go-to source of collectibles for avid fans of racing. Now in its 13th year, the Moneigh program is bi-coastal, spearheaded by ReRun on the East Coast and After the Finish Line in California. Volunteers and supporters from both organizations have partnered with owners and trainers of some of the biggest names in racing to create one-of- a-kind works of art painted by the celebrities themselves – the horses. Once again and just in time for the holiday season, the newest round of Moneighs have been unveiled and are available for purchase in the ReRun Shop on eBay. “In the beginning of this year I contacted Lisa Molloy at ReRun,” said Dawn Mellon, founder of After the Finish Line. “I told her, ‘You don't have any volunteers that paint Moneighs with our wonderful West Coast horses. We can partner and I will paint with the horses in California that are currently racing and those on the breeding farms.'” That new partnership has resulted in several notable portraits, including those created by Triple Crown winner American Pharoah and last year's Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner California Chrome.

These essays explore early modern writers using a broad range of approaches and methodologies. Topics covered include: contextualizing the self; female discursive strategies; religious discourses and gender; writing a female space; negotiating power and desire; female writing and the marketplace/publishing; and revisions of male-dominated poetic conventions and traditions. • Nichola Baechle, Aesthetic Response and Traditional Social Valuation in Euripides’ ‘Electra’: Tragic Kunstsprache and the kharakter of Heroes” (Berlin: De Gruyter, 2020). (Classical Studies) Euripides’ Electra thematizes and analyzes the appeal of tragic Kunstsprache: for his audience, it reflected traditional aristocratically-inflected assumptions about the continuity of appearance and substance, even in a radical democracy. An analogy between social appearances and aesthetic evaluation is played out and problematized: social appearances made clear the virtues and agency of the well-born just as aesthetic “appearances” indicated heroic character and agency. • Dominique Battles, “The Middle English Athelston and 1381, Part I: The Politics of Anglo-Saxon Identity,” Studies in Philology 117/1 (2020): 1-39.
