    2018 MEDIA GUIDE Rallye Deutschland August 16 - 19, 2018 ROUND 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 Rallye Deutschland August 16 - 19, 2018 HYUNDAI’S HELLO Welcome to Rallye Deutschland, Hyundai Motorsport’s home event, which takes place during a very exciting time for the WRC with both title battles finely balanced. Although last month’s Rally Finland didn’t produce the ultimate result for our team, Hayden finished just outside the podium places after a strong drive. Thierry and Nicolas continue to lead the Drivers’ championship with an advantage of 21 points, while the Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team heads the Manufacturers’ championship by 26 points so there’s plenty of reason to be positive. I must also congratulate our HMDP crew of Jari and Antti for recording their first WRC2 podium of the year with second in that class. Rallye Deutschland is the first tarmac event on the calendar since Tour de Corse in April. Since then we’ve worked on improving the suspension, especially the dampers, and centre differential mapping with two aims in mind: to achieve more grip for the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC and find a better balance. This follows feedback from our drivers during Corsica where they reported being hampered by understeer. Our three drivers for Germany – Thierry, Dani and Andreas – have all sampled the changes during development testing and they also got the opportunity to finalise their set-ups during the recent pre-event test, which took place over five days so we could experience the vineyard roads and those within the Baumholder military range, which are very specific to this rally.

    MEDIA INFORMATION 2019 FIA World Rally Championship Round 5: Xion Rally Argentina The MICHELIN LTX Force M6 is ideal ally for the WRC stars in Argentina The 2019 Rally Argentina – the second gravel fixture of this year’s World Rally Championship, after Rally Mexico – produced yet another thrilling battle between the WRC’s main title contenders, as well as in the WRC2 class. The South American round took place in the Villa Carlos Paz region (around 700 kilometres northwest of Buenos Aires) and kicked off in wet weather before the return of sunshine saw the thermometer climb to more than 20°C from Saturday afternoon onwards, including for Sunday’s high-altitude stages like Copina-El Cóndor. This Rally Argentina classic – which takes crews to an altitude of more than 2,100 metres above sea level – served as the Power Stage to wrap up the week’s action. To cope with the demands made by Rally Argentina varied stages, Michelin provided its WRC partners with a choice between the medium-compound MICHELIN LTX Force M6 and the harder MICHELIN LTX Force H4, while its WRC2 runners were able to opt for either the MICHELIN Latitude Cross S80 (soft) or the MICHELIN Latitude Cross H90 (hard). In both classes, the softer alternative (LTX Force M6 and Latitude Cross S80) proved the chief choice practically throughout as the drivers took advantage of its strong casing and grip performance to entertain the huge crowds despite the weekend’s hostile conditions. “This year’s Rally Argentina lived up to its promise in terms not only of the challenge it represented but also the show it delivered,” reports Arnaud Rémy, the manager of Michelin’s rally programmes.

    2018 MEDIA GUIDE Rally Turkey September 13 - 16, 2018 ROUND 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 Rally Turkey September 13 - 16, 2018 HYUNDAI’S HELLO Welcome to Rally Turkey and to an exciting step into the unknown for Hyundai Motorsport and the world championship fraternity. While Turkey is no stranger to the WRC, the event’s new home in Marmaris means an untried route for all manufacturer drivers and teams. And with the battle for both titles at a crucial stage with four rallies remaining, we can expect a very open and action-packed event in what is an important market for Hyundai: car production – including the road-going i20 – at its Izmit plant is 205,000 units per year. I was pleased that we were able to secure a podium result at our home rally in Germany last month. It means Thierry and Nicolas were able to increase their lead of the Drivers’ championship to 23 points, while Hyundai’s advantage over Toyota in the Manufacturers’ championship is 13 points. It was an eventful final morning in Germany, which unfortunately included a retirement for Dani and Carlos, ending their own podium charge. It was a pity for them after a strong weekend. They had the confidence and the speed, and we know they’ll take the positives ahead of their home rally in Spain next month. Thierry and Nicolas were there to pick up the position following Dani’s retirement with Andreas and Anders also moving up to sixth place. For Turkey, we welcome Hayden and Seb back to the team and we look forward to counting on their past performances and experience on gravel to boost our championship hopes on this event.

    MEDIA INFORMATION 2018 FIA World Rally Championship Round 8: Neste Rally Finland A successful maiden outing for the new MICHELIN LTX Force S6 and MICHELIN LTX Force M6 Michelin chose the fastest round of the 2018 FIA World Rally Championship to launch its latest range of WRC gravel tyres. For the first time since 2011, the French firm’s partners were able to select two compounds from a choice of three options, namely the existing H4 (hard compound) version of the MICHELIN LTX Force, along with the new S6 (soft) and M6 (medium) variants. The 2018 Neste Rally Finland, which is notorious for its soft ground and high speeds, was consequently a landmark event inasmuch as the company’s WRC partners were able to fit either the MICHELIN LTX Force S6 or the LTX Force M6. Meanwhile, its WRC2 crews lined up to continue the successful run the tyre manufacturer has enjoyed in the this since the beginning of the season with a choice between the MICHELIN Latitude Cross S80 (soft) and MICHELIN Latitude Cross H90 (hard). This year’s Rally Finland route incorporated numerous changes, with two-thirds of the stage distance that was different compared with 2017 and 40 percent that had either never been visited previously or else was completely new for the current-generation drivers. The event itself was again based in Jyväskylä (around 300km north of the country’s capital Helsinki) and featured a menu of three loops comprising 23 forest stages and a total competitive distance of 317.26 kilometres out of an overall distance of 1,427.49 kilometres.

It is their second crown in a Michelin-equipped Ford Fiesta WRC after four with Volkswagen, also in association with the French tyre brand. Thierry Neuville/Nicolas Gilsoul (Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC) and Ott Tänak/Martin Järveoja, (Toyota Yaris WRC) claimed the year’s silver and bronze medals respectively, while the Manufacturers’ crown went to Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT after a strong end to the 2018 campaign, chased by Hyundai Shell Mobis WRT (2nd) and M-Sport Ford WRT (3rd). Ahead of the season’s final clash, 2018 Rally Australia, forecasters had predicted a high risk of rain but the weather stayed clear practically throughout, with only localised showers affecting Friday’s run, followed by some heavier rain which swept across northern New South Wales on Saturday evening. Crews consequently only encountered muddy conditions in places on Sunday morning and, for the vast majority of the rally, they had to cope with the event’s hallmark combination of soft and hard- wearing ground. This cocktail made getting tyre choices and strategies right particularly crucial, especially as the WRC runners’ available quota was restricted to 28 hard-compound MICHELIN LTX Force H4s and 16 medium M6s.
