Batman and psychiatry Psychiatry in the movies Joseph Kane ‘If you think Arkham’s scary as a doctor, you should try it as a patient.’ Harley Quinn, Detective Comics, no. 83100 Since first appearing in Detective Comics in May 1939, Batman has become one of the most recognisable characters in 21st-century culture, spawning countless television series, video games, graphic novels and films. A frequently dark and psychological franchise, the Caped Crusader’s battle to save Gotham City from a multitude of colourful enemies often takes place against the sinister backdrop of Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane, run by the sadistic Dr Jeremiah Arkham. In addition to some of Batman’s more infamous foes, the Joker, the Penguin and Two-Face, Arkham is home to a number of other characters displaying a variety of psychiatric presentations: Amygdala, who, after surgical removal of his namesake anatomical structure, exhibits Klu¨ ver–Bucy syndrome; and the Ventriloquist, a former gangster with dissociative identity disorder, to name but two. However, it is our hero’s travails against doctors that expose the franchise’s prevailing unfavourable attitude towards psychiatrists and asylums. A relative newcomer to the Batman universe, Harley Quinn first appeared in 1992, her origins detailed in the graphic novel Mad Love (1994). Portrayed in different versions as an intern psychiatrist or psychoanalyst, Dr Harveen Quinzel volunteers to psychoanalyse Batman’s greatest foe, the Joker, following his admission to Arkham, but soon falls in love with her patient. Manufacturing his escape and assuming the moniker Harley Quinn, she becomes his lover and sidekick: ‘I found the Joker’s psyche disturbing, his dementia alarming, and his charm irresistible!’. Dr Jonathan Crane, the Scarecrow, is a corrupt ‘expert in fear’ who induces his victims’ greatest fears through the administration of psychoactive substances, using a hessian sack as a disguise and gas mask. The role is played to chilling effect by Cillian Murphy in both Batman Begins (2006) and The Dark Knight (2008). Although traditionally a minor character in the Batman canon, Dr Hugo Strange is one of Batman’s oldest enemies, first appearing in 1940 (pre-dating Catwoman and the Joker by several months), and is expected to appear as a key character in The Dark Knight Rises, the last film in Christopher Nolan’s trilogy. A corrupt Machiavellian professor of psychiatry, Strange performs barbaric experiments on his in-patients, brainwashes Gotham’s citizens and blackmails his rich psychotherapy clients. In the Prey series of graphic novels (2000), Strange is recruited as a forensic psychiatrist to the Gotham City Police and through psychological profiling deduces Bruce Wayne as the Caped Crusader’s alter ego. In addition to its damning portrayal of psychiatrists, the series also contains tacit references to the anti-psychiatry movement. Alan Grant, author of Batman: The Last Arkham (1992), derived the name of serial killer Victor Zsasz from that of Thomas Szasz and many of the Joker’s quips (‘In a world as psychotic as this. any other response would be crazy!’) are reminiscent of R. D. Laing’s famous quote, ‘Insanity is a sane response to an insane situation’. Lieber Title: House of Cards Advisor: Sheila Schroeder Degree Date: November 2013 Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to approach adapting a comic book into a film in a unique way. With so many comic-to-film adaptations following the trends of action movies, my goal was to adapt the popular comic book, Batman, into a screenplay that is not an action film. The screenplay, House of Cards, follows the original character of Miranda Greene as she attempts to understand insanity in Gotham’s most famous criminal, the Joker. The research for this project includes a detailed look at the comic book’s publication history, as well as previous film adaptations of Batman, and Batman in other relevant media.

  • Schurken Im Batman-Universum Dieser Artikel Beschäftigt Sich Mit Den Gegenspielern Der ComicFigur „Batman“

Page 84 MULTIMEDIA REVIEWS Batman: Arkham Reborn Writer: David Hine , Artist: Jeremy Haun (Publisher: DC Comics, 2010) Gotham City is a fitting home for its guardian – Batman lurks in the recesses of its distinctive architecture, camouflaging himself among the gargoyles and grotesques. Gotham’s cityscape is one of the most developed of all fictional locations: for the series No Man’s Land (1999) a detailed map of the city was produced, its rivers, bridges and streets named after DC Comics’ most beloved artists and writers. Undoubtedly, one of the most famous buildings in Gotham is Arkham Asylum – or, to give it its full name, ‘The Elizabeth Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane’ – a location introduced to the comics in 1974 to serve as a holding pen for Batman’s rogues gallery. Arkham Reborn is the latest story arc to develop the asylum’s mythos. It begins with the director, Jeremiah Arkham, picking his way through the ruins of the asylum (which was destroyed by the crime lord Black Mask during the events of a previous storyline). Stopping before one particular cell, Jeremiah recalls its former occupant, Humphrey Dumpler (AKA ‘Humpty Dumpty’), a man compelled to take things apart and put them back together – inevitably with disastrous consequences. ‘Poor Humphry,’ he muses. ‘Obsessed, like me, with repairing what was broken.’ This beginning recalls both Dan Slott and Ryan Sook’s Arkham Asylum: Living Hell (2003), the work in which Humpty Dumpty was introduced, and the seminal Arkham text, Grant Morrison and Dave McKean’s Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth (1989), wherein one doctor tells Batman: ‘sometimes you have to break down to rebuild, psychiatry’s like that’.

Running head: ARKHAM ASYLUM 1 Empathizing with Enemies: Establishing Good Practices for Patient-Provider Communication at Arkham Asylum © Randy Sabourin, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Key Words: Mental health, popular culture, narrative inquiry, interviews, patient-provider communication ARKHAM ASYLUM 2 Abstract Arkham Asylum is the home of some of popular culture's most notorious super villains. The neglect and inadequate care these villains receive mirrors a real world context in which mental illness is surrounded by stigma, misunderstanding, and poor rehabilitation rates. Patients like the Joker present complex mental health narratives. These extreme characters would likely be high profile subjects for real-world researchers. This study explores the niches between the usual action-packed escapades on the surface of Batman stories. By pulling back the curtain over the routine treatment of Arkham Asylum’s patients (also known as inmates), the researcher presents a set of good practices for improving their care through more effective communication. A rich data set of recorded audio interviews from the video game Batman: Arkham Asylum serves as the foundation for this set of good practices tailored to the needs of the fictional facility. Narrative inquiry is used to pull these recommendations from the data. Current real world mental health policies and good practices for patient-provider communication, grounded in existing literature, provide the framework within which the researcher compares the fictional world. Based on the narrative elements found in the data, this study recommends an empathy- driven and preventative approach to treating Gotham’s criminally insane population. Birds of Prey and the Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020) Purpose & Connection|BIBLE STUDY Facilitator Note: We encourage facilitators to take this Bible study and expound on it throughout the week, allowing it to be a springboard for deeper conversation and personal meditation. PRESS START Birds of Prey and the Emancipation of One Harley Quinn focuses on five female anti-heroes who must overcome past trauma and learn to trust each other to defeat a common enemy. Black Mask (Roman Sionis), the leader of a local crime family, is currently trying to take over Gotham City for himself. He is emotionally unbalanced and accompanied by an equally unbalanced Victor Zsasz, who enjoys killing people who upset Black Mask, even unintentionally. None of these characters have healthy coping mechanisms for their issues or anyone they can trust or confide in. This causes a lot of internalization of emotion that manifests itself in explosive anger, crying, or rash decisions that end in hilariously bad ways. ASK: God never intended us to live in isolation or to "deal" with our problems alone. Have you ever confided in a friend or group of people (friends, family, church, etc.) about a problem you're having that you were trying to handle alone? Did you find it to be helpful? Why or why not? EQUIP Proverbs 18:24 “There are “friends” who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother.” At the beginning of the movie, we see the story from Harley's point of view. She's struggling after a bad break-up and feels like she has no one left to rely on.
