Panipat was one of the five cities (prasthas) founded by the Pandava brothers during the times of the Mahabharata, its historic name thus being Panduprastha. Panipat was the scene of three pivotal battles which were the turning points of the Indian history. The First Kabuli Bagh Mosque Battle of Panipat was fought in 1526 between Ibrahim Lodhi and Babur which led to the establishment of Mughal empire in India. The Kabuli Bagh Mosque and the adjacent majestic garden with an imposing tank is a symbol of the victory of Babur over Ibrahim Lodhi. More than a religious shrine, the place is better known as a historical monument. The Second Battle of Panipat was fought in 1556 between the thirteen years old Emperor, Akbar and Hemu, in which Akbar was led to victory by his general Bairam Khan. The Third Battle of Panipat was fought in 1761 between the Afghan king Ahmad Shah Abdali and the Marathas in which Ahmad Shah won decisively. ‘Kala Amb' is a memorial built in memory of the soldiers who died in the battlefield of Panipat. • Speech by Shri Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, the President of India 13Th Convocation of the INDIAN ACADEMY of MEDICAL SCIENCES, New Delhi, January 03, 1976
Speech by Shri Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, The President of India 13th Convocation of the INDIAN ACADEMY OF MEDICAL SCIENCES, New Delhi, January 03, 1976 I deem it a privilege to have been invited to be the Chief Guest at the 13th Convocation of the Indian Academy of Medical Sciences. The Indian Academy of Medical Sciences is an association of the highest talents in the field of medical sciences. I am happy to note that the Academy is zealously striving to promote excellence in the field of medical research and education and that it plays a significant role in establishing an intellectual climate for the conduct of research in the specialized areas of medical science. India is committed to improving the quality of life and raising the standard of living of its people. To bring about this social transformation, we have adopted that method of planned development. Development, to my mind, means more the development of human quality and mental and physical resources rather than merely of material resources. If we wish individuals to have a qualitatively better life, the basic amenities incorporated in the scheme of development must cover areas of public health and health education. Science and technology will help us in solving the formidable problems facing us in the field of health and medical care only if we use them in the proper matrix and adapt them to our needs. Fight against death and disease has today become a global concern and the scientific communities of the developing world have to collectively evolve a strategy to face the spectra of disease, under‐nourishment and over population.

  • CHAPTER-S EMERGENCE and EVOLUTION of SIKKIM DEMOCRATIC FRONT AS a POLITICAL PARTY CHAPTER 5 Emergence and Evolution of Sikkim Democratic Front As a Political Party
CHAPTER-S EMERGENCE AND EVOLUTION OF SIKKIM DEMOCRATIC FRONT AS A POLITICAL PARTY CHAPTER 5 Emergence and Evolution of Sikkim Democratic Front as a Political Party 1. Dissention within Sikkim Sangram Parishad It has already been discussed in the last part of the previous chapter about the feud between Chamling and Bhandari and the former's expulsion from the party on the ground of ideological differences. In this chapter, we will try to assess the reason behind the dissention and the emergence of a new state political outfit, Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) and its role in the state politics. Pawan Chamling, a son of a farmer from Yangang, south Sikkim had first started his political career as the President of his village Yangang Gram Panchayat Unit in 1982 and became an MLA of Damthang Constituency in 1985. He slowly climbed up the political ladder to become a Cabinet Minister in SSP Government in 1989 and was the Minister- in-charge for Industries, Printing and Information & Public Relations.
