Weekend and Counted As a Point Scoring Round of the British Rally Championship (BRC), Irish Tarmac Championship (ITC) and MSA Asphalt Rally Championship SECOND CONSECUTIVE PWRC VICTORY FOR AL-ATTIYAH Nasser Al-Attiyah’s impressive performance on Italian soil secured him a second consecutive victory in a Prodrive Impreza N2009 at the fifth round of the Production World Rally Championship (PWRC), Rally Sardinia. Nasser secured victory by just 1.5 seconds from Patrick Sandell’s Skoda Fabia S2000 in a nail-bitign finish. The Barwa World Rally Team driver completed day one just six seconds off the lead despite feeling unwell. The Qatari driver drove consistently on day two and started day three securely in second place, 23.5 seconds off the lead. Intent on taking maximum points, Al-Attiyah closed the gap to first place to just 8.6 seconds on the opening stage of the day. He pushed through the final two stages to score one of the most exciting victories ever in the PWRC, Al-Attiyah’s victory in Sardinia puts him at the top of the championship with three rounds to go with the next event taking place at the Acropolis Rally of Greece on 12–14 June. Mads Ostberg was also competing in Sardinia in his Prodrive Impreza WRC2008 and, despite steering problems forcing him to retire on Saturday, the Adapta World Rally Team driver entered under SuperRally regulations on Sunday to finish seventh overall. Patrick Snijers won seven out of 12 stages to claim victory at the Soenens Rally in a BMA-supported Prodrive Impreza S12. The event was not only the first round of the Euro Rally Challenge but also a round of the Dutch and Belgium Rally Championship. In a Prodrive Impreza WRC2008 collected only a few days before the event, Mark Van Eldik made his return to rallying to finish fifth in class in his first event since his accident on the Hellendoorn Rally last year. The Jim Clark International Rally took place at the weekend and counted as a point scoring round of the British Rally Championship (BRC), Irish Tarmac championship (ITC) and MSA Asphalt Rally Championship. Mark Higgins claimed his fifth consecutive victory at the event in a Pirelli TEG-Sport-supported Prodrive Impreza N11, the third round of the BRC. Higgins is now only two points behind first place in the championship. Team-mate, Adam Gould, took his first podium finish, taking third place in a Prodrive Impreza N14. Melvyn Evans claimed victory in the MSA Asphalt Rally Championship in his Prodrive Impreza S11. Scoring his fourth consecutive maximum score in the championship, Evans is now almost untouchable at the top of the standings as drivers take their best five results to count towards their final position. David Mann made it an Impreza one-two in a Nortech Motorsport-supported Prodrive Impreza S6. In the ITC category, Tim McNulty and Eamonn Boland took second and third place on the podium, both in Dom Buckley- supported Prodrive World Rally Cars. Niall Maguire claimed victory at the Cavan Stages Rally, round three of the Border Stages Rally Championship, in his Wesley Emerson-supported Prodrive Impreza S11. Finishing in second place, and also in a Prodrive Impreza S11, was Kevin Barrett. While Turkey is no stranger to the WRC, the event’s new home in Marmaris means an untried route for all manufacturer drivers and teams. And with the battle for both titles at a crucial stage with four rallies remaining, we can expect a very open and action-packed event in what is an important market for Hyundai: car production – including the road-going i20 – at its Izmit plant is 205,000 units per year. I was pleased that we were able to secure a podium result at our home rally in Germany last month. It means Thierry and Nicolas were able to increase their lead of the Drivers’ championship to 23 points, while Hyundai’s advantage over Toyota in the Manufacturers’ championship is 13 points. It was an eventful final morning in Germany, which unfortunately included a retirement for Dani and Carlos, ending their own podium charge. It was a pity for them after a strong weekend. They had the confidence and the speed, and we know they’ll take the positives ahead of their home rally in Spain next month. Thierry and Nicolas were there to pick up the position following Dani’s retirement with Andreas and Anders also moving up to sixth place. For Turkey, we welcome Hayden and Seb back to the team and we look forward to counting on their past performances and experience on gravel to boost our championship hopes on this event.
