  • 125 Years of Toronto Streetcars
125 YEARS OF TORONTO STREETCARS UPPER CANADA RAILWAY SOCIETY BOX 122 STATION "A" TORONTO, ONTARIO One of the Belgian streetcars which recently began running on a new line at the Grand Cypress Resort near Orlando, Florida. See article 'The End of an Era' in this issue. , --John Fleck Gulf Pulp & Paper Co. 0-6-0 38, on display at Mount Forest, Ont., after being bought by Christian Bell Porcelain. Further details in Feb. 1986 NEWSLETTER. Photo taken April 26, 1986. McCarten lP NFTA LRV 125 has been turned into the world's newest and fanciest 'streetcar diner' outside Hoak's Armor Inn, Hamburg, N.Y. The car was dropped and damaged irreparably while being deliverd to the NFTA shops in Buffalo; a replacement 125 was subsequently built and delivered and the '1st 125', which never turned a wheel in revenue service, was sold to this restaurant, probably for use as a cocktail lounge. July 28, 1986. McCarten SEPTEMBER 1986 3 Years of Urban Rail Transit in Tnronto On Sept. 11, 1986 we think back to the equivalent date in 1861, when Canada's first urban rail passenger service commenced operation: a horsecar service provided by the Toronto Street Railway Company. Mr. Alexander Easton of Philadelphia, a public transit entrepreneur of the day, obtained a 30-year franchise to operate animal powered streetcar service from the City of Toronto on March 26, 1861. The TSR was organized in May of that year with A. Easton as President and Alexander Bleekly and Daniel Smith as Directors. The franchise provided for service on at least a 30-minute headway, with the daily operating period to be 16 hours a day in summer and 14 hours a day in winter (the spring and fall seasons do not appear to have been recognized).

  • Upper Canada Railway Society Box 122 Station "A" Toronto, Ontario February 1982
NCORPORATED 1952 NUMBER 388 FEBRUARY 1982 UPPER CANADA RAILWAY SOCIETY BOX 122 STATION "A" TORONTO, ONTARIO FEBRUARY 1982 —I SURFACE 1 2 MILES CUT & COVER 1.7 MILES —4« ROCK TUNNEL 3 5 MILES H ROCK -FEBRUARY 1982 BUFFALO: SSe^© NIAGARA FRONTIER TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY LIGHT RAIL RAPID TRANSIT PROGRESS REPORT by John D. Thompson A visit to downtown Buffalo on December 11, 1981 revealed that the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's rapid transit line is taking on a high profile in this section of the city. The ramp at Main and Tupper (near the former bus terminal) was finished, and the portal itself was Hearing completion. A truly inspiring sight was that of the brand new trackbed extending from the ramp in nearly completed form the full length of downtown to Main and South Park Avenue. Rail installation will begin this spring. The section of trackbed where Main Street passes under the Marine Midland Building (near the Exchange Street Amtrak station) required particular attention, as the company's under• ground parking garage is located beneath the street. An approximately one foot thick layer of concrete was carefully removed, exposing the roof structure of Marine's garage. Over this area a special sealant was applied to ensure that leaks would not develop (and create a car wash instead of a parking lot'.). A concrete base was then poured and forms were set to pour extruded sills. These sills hold the floating track bed that Is being used to reduce noise and vibration under the structure. Next came three median strips which divide the area between the floating slabs, followed by a composition of low density concrete and foam between the sills to help sound absorption.

BULLETIN 17 - “Halifax — Birney Stronghold” is the title of a 22-page bulletin covering, in thorough fashion the history of the electric railways of Halifax. The bulletin is illustrated with photos and maps and contains an extensive equipment roster. Copies are available at 50¢ apiece from the Association’s editorial office, 6959 De l’Epee Avenue, Montreal 15, QC. T.T.C. — FEDERATION TO CAUSE CARLINE ABANDONMENT AND NEW LOOP CONSTRUCTION For the second time in 1954, the TTC routing system will undergo a violent upheaval on July 1st., although in this instance, the suburban routes (principally bus) are the most affected. However, a sudden and unexpected portion of the reroutings consists of the cutting back of the Kingston Road carline to the City Limits at Victoria Park Avenue, and its replacement by an inward extension of the Scarboro bus route. The Bingham Loop at the City Limits has had the north track of the two in the right-of-way section removed, where across-platform transferring between cars and buses will take place. The Kingston Road carline will continue, with the same service as previously operated, between Bingham Loop and McCaul Loop, and combined with the Coxwell route evenings, Saturdays and Sundays.
