Bitta1*, Symon M. Kariuki1, Eddie Chengo2 and Charles R. J. C. Newton1,3 Abstract Background: Little is known about the state of mental health systems in Kenya. In 2010, Kenya promulgated a new constitution, which devolved national government and the national health system to 47 counties including Kilif County. There is need to provide evidence from mental health systems research to identify priority areas in Kilif’s men- tal health system for informing county health sector decision making. We conducted an initial assessment of state of mental health systems in Kilif County and documented resources, policy and legislation and spectrum of mental, neurological and substance use disorders. Methods: This was a pilot study that used the brief version of the World Health Organization’s Assessment Instru- ment for Mental Health Systems Version 2.2 to collect data. Data collection was based on the year 2014. Results: Kilif county has two public psychiatric outpatient units that are part of general hospitals. There is no stan- dalone mental hospital in Kilif. There are no inpatients or community based facilities for people with mental health problems. Although the psychiatric facilities in Kilif have an essential drugs list, supply of drugs is erratic with frequent shortages. There is no psychiatrist or psychologist in Kilif with only two psychiatric nurses for a population of approxi- mately 1.2 million people. -

NATIONAL DROUGHT MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY National Drought Early Warning Bulletin June 2021 1 Drought indicators Rainfall Performance The month of May 2021 marks the cessation of the Long- Rains over most parts of the country except for the western and Coastal regions according to Kenya Metrological Department. During the month of May 2021, most ASAL counties received over 70 percent of average rainfall except Wajir, Garissa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, Taita Taveta and Tana River that received between 25-50 percent of average amounts of rainfall during the month of May as shown in Figure 1. Spatio-temporal rainfall distribution was generally uneven and poor across the ASAL counties. Figure 1 indicates rainfall performance during the month of May as Figure 1.May Rainfall Performance percentage of long term mean(LTM). Rainfall Forecast According to Kenya Metrological Department (KMD), several parts of the country will be generally dry and sunny during the month of June 2021. Counties in Northwestern Region including Turkana, West Pokot and Samburu are likely to be sunny and dry with occasional rainfall expected from the third week of the month. The expected total rainfall is likely to be near the long-term average amounts for June. Counties in the Coastal strip including Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale will likely receive occasional rainfall that is expected throughout the month. The expected total rainfall is likely to be below the long-term average amounts for June. The Highlands East of the Rift Valley counties including Nyeri, Meru, Embu and Tharaka Nithi are expected to experience occasional cool and cloudy Figure 2.Rainfall forecast (overcast skies) conditions with occasional light morning rains/drizzles. -

Creary This thesis explores the social, political, and symbolic roles of the Mijikenda kayas in the Coast Province of Kenya. The kayas, which exist today as sacred grove forests, are the original homesteads of the Mijikenda and the organizational units from which the symbolic authority and esoteric knowledge of the Mijikenda elders are derived. As a result, I conceptualize kayas as the physical space of the forests, but also complex networks of political, metaphysical, and symbolic power. While the kaya forests and their associated institutions have often been framed as cultural relics, I use this lens to illustrate how the position of the kayas in Mijikenda life has influenced broader social and political developments. Three main themes are developed: the first theme addresses how the kayas were used in different capacities to create space from the encroachment of colonial rule. -

Rogers Institute of Current World Affairs 22 Fifth Avenue New York 6, New York Dear Mr. Rogers The public Railways and Inland Marine Service of ast Africa, a] oerated by the Railways and Harbours Administration, are by far the rlncipal means of transport of the area. In 1992 they performed some I,98,60,O ton miles of freight haulage and some 6,,898 passenger orneys over ,O99 route miles of metre gauge railway and other routes. The present role of the railway is varie. At the outlying pointB it is rovidlng access to new agrlc,tural areas and to mineral operations. Along established lines it continues to bring in the capital equipment for development and the import goods in demand by the uropean, Asian and African population; but it also is serving increasingly as an economic integrator, allowing regional agricultural specialization so that each smal bloc of territory ned not remain fully self sufficient in food grains. The comparatively cheap*haulage to the coast of larger quantities of export produce, sisal, cotton, coffee, sod-ash, is a necessary facility for the expanding economy of .East Africa. The railway also gives mobility to labor in ast Africa, facilitating the migrations necessary for agricultural purposes and for industries denendent upon large numbers of African personnel. By providing longer heavier haulge services, the railways complement their own and other motor transport service; the natural difficulties of road building and maintanance being formidable in East Africa, it is usually accepted that truck haulage routes should be ancilary to the railway. -

Implementation will be assessed in terms of the six objectives of the Conservation and Management Plan (CMP). The online questionnaire is divided into these six main objectives, and asks specific questions in relation to the activities that need to be carried out to fulfil those objectives. Please answer all questions as fully and as accurately as possible. It may seem time-consuming, but once you have completed the first report, the next time will be much easier because you can simply revise your existing report online. Comprehensive responses to the questions posed in Section 1.4 should satisfy many of the reporting requirements of the 2004 FAO Guidelines to Reduce Sea Turtle Mortality in Fishing Operations, thereby avoiding duplication of effort.
