Batuk, the 15 year old protagonist who was sold into sex slavery by her father when she was only 9, has devised means by which she can dissociate from her life in order to survive. The other is through her own words, written down on purloined paper, to make her thoughts "visible", to show that she exists. She writes: "I am not sure why I write but in my mind I shudder that it may be so that one day I can look back and read how I have melted into my ink and become nothing She is referred to as a "toy", "dolly", "thing", and other terms that attempt to erase her humanity. Frequently she is brutally assaulted and there are no ramifications for those who brutalize her. It is easy to be overwhelmed by the images; to want to put the book down because of the emotional onslaught; to feel that there is an element of gratuitous violence. But there is also the need to immediately pick the book up again and read further and to know more. This story does not invite the reader to pity Batuk, and all those in her situation, but to The Blue Notebook outrage that Batuk's life is accepted and acceptable. It is a call to action. The narrator's voice is sincere and her delivery is matter-of-fact. She is separated from her reality by her imaginative fantasy life, where she lives in a gilded room instead of a tiny dirty nest, where men are "bakers" who bake "sweetcakes" with her instead of paying customers who fuck a little girl. In her imagination, her friend, Puneet, is a prince on a throne, worshipped by a parade of his devotees all day; this is in sharp contrast to his reality as a castrated 14 The Blue Notebook old boy who nearly dies after being raped by two police officers. This book does carry a sort of uplifting sentiment. Batuk's optimism, perseverance, cheer and steadiness provide a welcome alternative to the sadness of life for exploited children, and there is a sense that the human spirit can transcend these most miserable circumstances. Several people have compared this book to Anne Frank's diary, which is not entirely accurate but gives you a sense of the intention of the message. Conceptually, Max Richter's The Blue Notebooks -- German-born composer mixes The Blue Notebook classical compositions with electronic The Blue Notebook in a dreamscapy journalogue featuring excerpts from Kafka's The Blue Octavo Notebooks as narrated by Tilda Swinton-- reads like a relentlessly precious endeavor, as new age music for grad students, the sort of record that sagely pats you on the back for being smart enough to seek it out. And yet in practice, despite the fact that it is exactly as outlined above, Kafka quotes and all, there is absolutely nothing exclusive or contrived- feeling about it. In fact, not only is Richter's second album one of the finest of the last six months, it is also one of the most affecting and universal contemporary classical records in recent memory. But how to describe music that relies so completely on seeming familiar? Richter may fancy himself in a class with Philip Glass, Brian Eno and Steve Reich indeed, his hyperattenuated sense of minimalism owes to all threebut unlike his influences, he's not remotely interested in subverting the traditional rules of composition. Short of one very beautiful moment that plunges an electronic sublow bassline into a deep sea of harpsichords and violas see: the literally perfect The Blue Notebook Journal"there is nothing here to suggest that Richter is concerned with anything other than melody and economy. Constituted mainly of sparse pieces that lean on string quartets and pianos in equal measure, The Blue Notebooks is a case study in direct, minor- key melody. Each of the piano pieces "Horizon Variations", "Vladimir's Blues" and "Written in the Sky" establish strong melodic motifs in under two minutes, all the while resisting additional orchestration. Elsewhere, Richter's string suites are similarly striking; "On the Nature of Daylight" coaxes a stunning rise out of gently provincial arrangements while the comparatively epic penultimate track "The Trees" boasts an extended introductory sequence for what is probably the album's The Blue Notebook brush with grandiosity. Richter's slightly less traditional pieces also resound; both the underwater choral hymnal "Iconography" and the stately organ piece "Organum" echo the spiritual ambience that characterized his work for Future Sound of London. If, however, there is one piece that fires The Blue Notebooks off into the stratosphere, it's the aforementioned "Shadow Journal". Featuring a lone viola, some burbling electronics, a harpsichord and a subterranean bassline, it The Blue Notebook a simple, keening melody and then gently pulls it wide, like warm string taffy, across its eight minutes. The fourth track on the record, it is nonetheless its centerpiece, The Blue Notebook on a larger scale, possibly a gigantic beacon for composers The Blue Notebook for useful ways to introduce The Blue Notebook music's visceral, body-jarring qualities into the classical sphere.
