It focuses on the recent proliferation of neo-Pentecostalism among Brazilian football players living abroad and the importance of religion in their daily lives. Serving as a civilizing device that promotes better insertion of individuals in modern institutions, neo-Pentecostalism promotes voluntary obedience, self-control, self-awareness and reflexivity, by encouraging the conscious and constant monitoring of the individual over the body and emotions. This self-discipline has a limit, and the Theology of Prosperity offers conciliation between asceticism and material consumption. Football provides religion a large stage for its preaching, allowing it to reach billions of homes. The athletes become “selfless soldiers of the Word,” who demonstrate the faith globally and disseminate banal religion through the mediascape. Keywords: Football, Religion, neo-Pentecostalism, Football Players, Banal Religion, Emigration Resumo O artigo trata das relações entre futebol e religião. -

Reflections on the World Cup JAIME RAMIREZ
Reflections on the World Cup JAIME RAMIREZ In 2018 the World Cup will be held in Russia and the buzz around the world is one of ecstasy, particularly for young countries that qualified for the first time, like Iceland and Panama. With World Cup fixtures, the Netherlands and the United States, failing to qualify for the final stage, there is talk of major change in both federations. The United States, in particular, had been mak- ing important strides in recent Cups, making it to the second round routinely. This setback will undoubtedly make U.S. Soccer come to terms with the real- ity that major changes need to be made in order for the team to return to the world stage, especially as the U.S. has submitted a joint bid (with Mexico and Canada) to host the 2026 World Cup. Recently, I heard a network announcer ask his colleagues, “Do you remem- ber the first World Cup that you saw?” It was interesting to hear recollections on what is generally recognized as the greatest sporting event on earth. Here are my own earliest recollections, and how they have shaped my life. The first World Cup that I watched was the 1966 event hosted by England (the last one televised in black and white). The Cup introduced me to “El Rey” Pele (Edson Arantes do Nascimento) from Brazil, the “Black Panther of Mo- zambique,” Eusebio from Portugal, and the Charlton brothers, Jackie and Bob- by, from the eventual winner England. I remember sitting on the living room floor of our house in Mexicali and hearing the announcer continually mention the name “Charlton.” As days went by and England advanced, it dawned on me that there were two Charltons, Bobby and Jackie—gradually, I was able to distinguish between the brothers. -

Soccer-Nation
Soccer & Society, 2013 http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/14660970.2013.854582 The decline of the ‘Soccer-Nation’: journalism, soccer and national identity in the 2002 World Cup Ronaldo Helala* and Antonio Jorge Soaresb aGraduate and Undergraduate School of Social Communication, State University of Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; bGraduate and Undergraduate School of Education, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil This essay analyses the media narrative in the coverage of the Brazilian team during the 2002 World Cup. The corpus of our work is concentrated on the sports supplements of Jornal do Brasil during the 2002 World Cup from two days before the event until two days after its end, reaching the total of 32 supplements. We focus on the hypothesis that the qualification ‘Brazil: the soccer country’, usually even more intense and singular during this worldwide event, has been decreasing and the journalistic narratives about the Brazilian soccer team do not approach soccer homogeneously as a metonym for the nation. The reflection about the role of the sports press as cultural builder is fundamental to observe how newspapers confirm and construct mythologies and identitary discourses, in spite of the journalistic objectivity, one of the pillars of the profession. Introduction In this essay, we aim to continue a debate started by Ronaldo Helal and César Gordon when they presented the paper “The Brazilian Soccer Crisis and post-moder- nity: perspectives on the twenty-first century” at Compos 20011 in the ‘Communica- tion and Sociability’ working group. The essay shows how soccer went through an intense cultural incorporation process to become ‘the Brazilian passion’. -
